Lost Car Keys

I have lost my Vrs keys at work today. I have looked everywhere at work and I went to Morrisons in the morning in the works van So I went back to see if anyone has handed them in but no luck. So I went to the dealer and ordered a new key fob for £136.

Do you think I should tell my insurance company.

Re: Lost Car Keys

Should have bought a blank from ebay and had it cut and programmed for far less, as for your keys, was there anything with it that would link it to your car? or was it just the key on its own?

Fob and blank here: SKODA FABIA, OCTAVIA, SUPERB FLIP KEY FOB REMOTE - eBay Skoda, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 23-Sep-07 22:05:58 BST)
And Blank cut to your car for £6 here: Audi VW Seat Skoda Flip key blade CUT TO YOUR CAR FREE - eBay Audi, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 28-Sep-07 15:26:41 BST)

If you Order the blank from ebay and either send the guy a digital pic or your key number he will cut it for you.

Not sure about the insurance, probably worth a call and they may even pay for you to get locks changed? depends on your NCD whether you look at it I suppose, i dont think you can get traced via a clubcard though can you?

Re: Lost Car Keys

Forgive me for being a bit paranoid but you give some guy on ebay your key number and your address for him to post it to you...........I know its a chipped key and it wont start the engine but are you not worried about it being towed away in the night?

************* BUYER BEWARE***********
I recently bought a blank "new" 3 button key fob from eBay in an effort to save some money on a replacement and it apprently turned out to be used and therefore not codeable with VAGCOM as VRStu will confirm.

Not happy at having wasted £23

Re: Lost Car Keys

When the dealer recodes the keys, he will basically cancel the remote and immobilser working on the lost one. That means that if found, the remote will not unlock the car, and the immobiliser will not let the car start. BUT, the key will still work the locks, and work in the ignition but the engine will not start. Hopefully the keys had nothing to identify where your car is left during day/night hours (home/work address, company name, tel. number etc.)

Re: Lost Car Keys

Have you checked the works van (under seats, loading bay, any nooks and crannies).

Re: Lost Car Keys

Everybody stopped work to find the key but no luck. Will be going back in the morning to have another look. Phoned up Tesco and Tesco can only give my name/address to the Police or a branch of Tesco's, will not give details to member of the public.

Good luck.

Exactly, so try to hide the car until you get the new key - obviously any other keys you have for this car will need to all be handed in to get recoded along with the new one. Of course you could always buy one of these steering wheel cover lock things if you feel that the car is still at risk - untill all your keys have been recoded.

I do have a steering wheel lock but the key for this was with the car key.

Re: Lost Car Keys

Bu---r! So much for that simple smart idea, I didn't think cars normally needed these steering wheel cover lock things - but maybe I've been lucky (so far). Had a Ford van once - a long time ago, someone broke into it and nicked the Paddy Hopkirk rally seat covers - but left the van - I think they made the right choice!

Have it sent to a different address (specify in ebay checkout and paypal), that's what I did.

I used the above guy, great service, received it the day after I paid for it. Works perfectly, unlike Tipsons who charged me £6 to cut a copy and it didn't work)

Re: Lost Car Keys

hi brad -

had same sort of problem myself a while back - dealers will only put a new set of locks in your car and will be expensive - keys these days are a specialist job - i take it you have a spare to get you around -
your key will have a 14 digit pin number and will be cut on a lazer - your pin will be canceled and a new one issued by VAG and programmed in making your lost key useless - i wouldnt bother waisting your money on ebay - you may have to travel but try eyden locksmiths ltd based in coventry unless you have somebody more local-

Re: Lost Car Keys

Will be getting one of those key whistle devices. I went to the Police Station today to see if anyone has handed them in but no luck. Still not sure if I want to make a insurance claim or not?.
