strange noise when doing 30-50

Here is a strange one.

My car makes a strange whirring/rubbing noise when either slowing down through 40mph e.g. to enter a roundabout from a dual carriageway etc, or when cruising at about 40mph.

It appears to be coming from the front of the car. It isn't that loud but it's definately a noise that wasnt there before.

BTW the noise is present whether in/out of gear or regardless of how much throttle.

I've just had 2 new tyres, but they were put on the back. The original back tyres (conti's) were put on the front. I had 4 conti's and now have Hankook Ventus on the back. Maybe it's the back thats quieter and only now the noise isnoticeable on the front?????

Swop wheels around as a check - any difference?

Swapped the tyres around. Noise is still there.

Looks like a trip to the dealers is in order.

Mine does the same and its only done 13000 miles. Its going in on thursday for 2 days to change the console bushes but they said they havent got a clue what that noise is. thats why its in for 2 days so everything gets checked. they did mention it could be a wheel bearing.

While awaiting your answer to Stu's question... I have Continentals (Supreme Contact) tires, just had a 10k/km service. I had been worried since new about a rubbing grinding sound coming from the fabia's front end. Anyway, it slowly was decreasing in volume as time went on (but could still be heard when I was slowing down). Anyway, when the rotated my tires the sound came back as well. In my opinion, I think it must be the tread pattern's sound as the Conti's wear.

I have also heard the same noise the last few days around 40mph! I don't think it is a wheel bearing as the noise seems to go away when going faster. I think it sounds like the tyres but I have done about 6k on my fronts.
The strange thing is that every post that comes up here about strange noises my vRS seems to have them all! I have given up going to the dealer as they can never hear the noise and if I go on a test drive with them the noises seem to vanish. I always think that whenever I hear a noise now it must be in my head!

I think that Continentals aren't the best tire option for the Furby. I, personally, am convinced that the funny rubbing, grinding sounds are the tires.
A. Because I have heard several comments on here about a similar issue...
B. Because I can't believe that so many cars could have an unnoticed (by the manufacturer, dealer) mechanical defect.
C. When I rotated my tires - put the less worn out back tires on the front, the sound has become more noticeable.

Had the same problem with my car just before I sold it. Had a look a few times, but could never see anything lose or how anything could rub.

Looks like the conti's are the culprits here. The noise is definately reduced now that i've put the new tyres on the front and the conti's back to the rear. Still there but a few notches up on the radio should sort that out.

I have heard this sound coming from my Fabia vRs too. Its a 55 plate 43,000 miles.
I have never owned a diesel before so i thought it was just the engine sound.

After reading this im abit worried now. I got it from a Skoda dealer and they said they gave it a full service.

Not sure if i should get an inderpendant delar to have a look

Mine's always had that sort of noise when doing about 30 in 2nd. The dealer claimed it was harmonics or something, but in 3 years and 58k of ownership (on the stock Michelins and also Toyos), it's never got any worse. I just try to avoid doing that speed in that gear...

The radio does solve a lot of fabia noise issues I've found.

However, if it had been a wheel bearing, that's one noise that needs sorting out in a non-volume upping manner. I have a complete fabia vRS nearside outer hub housing & bearing ready for just this time - Will save time and effort all round, and it was dirt cheap.

I got a friend to have a look at it how knows a thing or two about cars (hes worked for Ford,MG and Honda). He said it was the Tubo spooling.
I dont know much about cars under the bonnet but i thought if it was that i would only get that noise on acleration.
But the noise starts at 30 and gets louder with speed and quiter when i slow down. The nosie stays there till i go under 30.

It only just had a service at Trans City Skoda in E17 (London), so not sure if i should take it back

When i took it for service they checked the wheel bearings and other parts that may be causing the noise. They couldn't find anything. Now i think i've got used to it and have stopped obsessing over it so in my mind the noise has gone. :-)

But now you b*stards have brought it up again it'll start annoying me.
