Sunglasses holder removal ?

Hello,

I've just taken ownership of my first Skoda, a very nice 1 year old Octy II Elegance Estate, and have been giving it a good clean up as you do. (Trying to get it back to that zero-year-old appearance).

The dirtest thing on the car so far seems to be the inside of sunglasses holder (the one in the roof headlining). It's coated in a layer of dirt, the kind of black dirt that gets seems to get behind nearly all plastic trim.

So, getting to the point, does anyone know if there is an easy way to remove the sunglasses holder in order to clean it properly ? This would save the risk of smearing the dirt into the fabric rooflining.

Mine was like that from new, so you already have the "zero-year-old appearance".

Spent ages cleaning mine. Used a orange based wipe and cleaned it without removing it. Really comes up clean if you take your time about it.

Mine bins holder was black with dirt after about 2 weeks

There are some bits in the OctyII that are a pain in the *** to keep clean.

I wanted to do it because I needed to cover it by self-adhesive cotton on interior. When I leave sunglasses in they rattle.
Took me a while to figure it out but it's off now and it's simple.
When you open the door (if I could call it "door") of the sunglasses holder, you'll see two plastic clips on the walls, one of each side, left and right. Put tiny screwdriver under the one on one side and pull gently just about one mm. Hold it like that and pull whole the holder towards the beck of the car, but just the side where you're holding the clip. Holder should go like half of centimeter towards the back of the car. Now, you have to hold it in that position and you can take the screwdriver out. The clip will stay away from its clipping position. Now do the same on the other side but always holding the first side towards the back of the car so it wouldn't come back and clip in.
After both sides are unclipped, keeping the pressure towards the back of the car, grab the part of the holder that is facing the back of the car (part that has those three grills) and just strongly pull whole the holder down. Then unplug the cable and that's it.

Yes I do.
What do you need to change? Main bulb? Turning sign bulb? Or you want to change whole the unit?
Anyway, here is a copy of one of my previous posts that could help you. If you need something that isn't in the following text, let me know and I'll do my best to help. Removing headlight unit is 3 min. job when done properly. Here it comes:



How to adjust fitting position of the main beam:

For those who have one or both beams not perfectly fittied (like I've had):

First, you have to take the beam out by unscrewing one white plastic nut on the back of it (on the top, closer to the center of the front of the car). Then you need to unclip the big hook-clip that is at the front of the beam, area that is covered by hood when closed. You'll se black plastic hook (front, bottom of the beam, closer to the central grill). That hook has a little square tip on it, it looks like a small pedal. Gently lift up that pedal and the hook is free to be pulled towards the center of the car. After the hook doesn't go out more, the beam is free to get out. Push it from the inside of the engine compartment. That technique is also used when you need to change any bulb from the beam.
Unplug the cable on the back of the beam.
Now, be very careful not to drop the beam unit or scratch the glass.
Put the beam away.
Now you can see the big black base on the same level as the hook (where bottom of the beam goes). That base has two TORX screws. You'll need torx-25 key to do the adjustment. Screws are close to each side, each one of them. I've done it by unscrewing just one, not completely, just a little bit, so the base on that side moves front-back. If you need to move whole the base left-right then you need to release both screws. Unscrewing one screw is for adjusting each side of the beam in direction front-back, or both screws for moving left-right whole the thing.
If you need to adjust the hight of one side of the beam or hight of whole the beam, you'll see arround each screw one big plastic ring. You have to release the screw and with help of the pin that each ring has, turn the ring. You'll see if you turn one way, the base on that side goes up. The other way it goes down. Attention, if you release the screw just a bit and base needs to go up, by turning the ring it will touch the head of the screw so you'll need to release a bit more.
Whole the work is done by moving the black base milimiter by milimiter and then putting the beam back to see if it now sits the right way. When checking, put the beam back and just clip the hook whole the way (make sure it's in whole the way). No need to plug the cable and screw the white plastic nut back. After everything is adjusted the way you like, do the last check by putting the beam in, clipping the hook and close the engine hood. Look carefuly and touch all ends of the beam to see if it's on the right place.
If everything is OK, take the beam out, plug the cable, put it back in, clip the hook and screw the white plastic nut.
Job done
And yes, you'll need to adjust the beams pointing after that as it's changed.

Just one more thing. It's bit tricky to unplug the cable on the back of the beam but it will go out after few tries.

Going back to the sunglasses holder - what is that black thing on the holder? Looks like some sort of fan assembly + vents?

Edit: Found the word "innenraumsensor" on it - sensor? Ummmm - Googled it and I now think it's the interior alarm sensor - correct?

Yes its the alarm interior sensor.
I know cause when my car was new I left the kids locked in it whilst nipping into the petrol station shop.
Alarm never went off so I tried it again at home by sitting in the car and locking the doors and waving arms about - still didn't activate alarm. Mentioned it to the dealer at first service who promptly replaced sensor so alarm now works. Dealer said the parts were called 'interior sonic system'.

Wow! I didn't even know it was a sunglass holder! I though it was just another storage cubby hole in the roof ! and to be honest I'd had the car weeks before I new it was there!! I've only just by accident discovered the centre arm rest slides forward lol I've only had the car since November !!! ;-)

The padded part on the lid of the jumbo box slides backwards and forwards.

Sorry, my english is not so good. I presume you're asking what I've done covering interior of sunglasses holder. I've done it by Toyota's "Interior Noise Kit". That is the box full of self-adhesive cotton sheets, various shapes and thickness. I've got it at Toyota dealer. Just go and ask for "Interior Noise Kit", part Nº 08231-00801. The box is big and has a lot of sheets inside. It's not expensive. I've covered whole interior so my sunglasses don't get scratched and don't rattle.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the sunglass holder in the light grey trim colour? I’m tempted to fit one as my shades are currently rattling around in the dash top cubby.

I tried my dealer but they said if it’s not in the accessories catalogue, you can’t get one.

Hmmm...not sure thats possible because when I removed mine, it left a big hole in the roof of the car. If you wanted to fit one, then you might need to start cutting the inside roof!

I'm assuming that it would just be a case of removing my existing plastic trim panel (which holds the alarm module), swap the module over and clip in the sunglasses holder into place. I've unclippped my panel and there is quite a large space above it so I don't think any cutting would be required.

Hi,

Well - as I've not seen your roof interior I was unaware that you had a trim panel in place of the sunglasses holder.

Can you take a picture of it and post it here?

OK - so you have the cut out already there - I would say a quick trip to your Skoda dealer and find out how much the sunglasses holder would cost!

For fitting - just remove the trim and alarm sensor unit and replace with what Skoda sell you - connect up the alarm cable, clip in place and off you go!

Here are a couple of photos showing the panel in place and what's behind it.

I did try my dealer but drew a blank - the guy said that if it’s not in the Octavia accessories catalogue, he could not get one. Not overly helpful but probably something to do with the fact he'd been out on the beer the night before (so he told me).

I was hoping someone with the sunglass holder could pop theirs out and see if the part number moulded into the back.

Here are parts Nº for sunglasses holder. Beware, there are various types and colours, and then for Octy with or without sunroof. Look carefuly at the picture and study number 18. Number 18A, I guess, is the cover you have right now. Or, print it and take to your dealer to find right one for your car.
