Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

Although not in the league of vehicle recall, you'd think that VAG would have moved over to metal impeller design for genuine parts rather than continue with the plastic one. They could even justify a big price premium for the unsuspecting punter.

Careful if the rest of that is in the engine. They have a nasty habit of getting around to the thermostat and jamming it up.

Looks like it's age that counts, not mileage then.

I'm getting worried now. My car's three years old and 57,000km
Should I look at getting it changed soon?

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

getting mine donw in a few weeks. Where is the best place to buy the metal impeller version? rumor has it that skoda have done a design change (changed the spec of the plastic) for a new version. Not sure i'd trust it though....the original should have been life tested. its terrible (and worrying)

Skoda want 35 squids for the "improved" version.
I got my "improved" version from GSF, 21 squids.

Skodas - yes , GSF etc, no - metal.

I had my Belt n pump done on the vRS yesterday. After all the paranoia the pump looks absolutely fine. Not sure what I should be looking for on the belt kit for wear tho?

( Oh I , cost £290 inc an oil change )

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

GSF used to do the metal ones, the new batch are plastic.

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

I paid £260 for belt & pump - after it failed and RAC dragged car back.

Just change it.

Audi A3 in the garage at the same time with a pump (same engine etc.) that had broken, then seized, snapped the cam belt and put a valve through no.1 piston £2200

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

Got some prices today for my 2003 vrs, for belt/water pump change, the prices varied wildly.
£450 from a skoda dealer for just the belt!! down to £280 from a VW dealer, but the VW dealer would not fit the pump with the metal impeller if I supplied it, so getting it done at another Skoda dealer for £300 all in with me supplying the pump
Also GSF in Birmingham only have the metal impeller type water pumps, the guy on the counter said he'd never seen a plastic type.

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

i got my water pump from GSF back in october, and it had a brass impeller. i didnt even ask for metal specifically, it just was!

local skoda garage did it all for £270, and fitted the pump i supplied to them.

i never saw the old pump, but ive done over 10k since and all is well.

plastic is clearly the work of the devil!! devils cheese some may say....

Re: For anyone doing the belt and pump

Ive had my cambelt and waterpump done today and was advised NOT to fit a metal impellar water pump as the bearings have a tendancy to go ond seize the pump, snapping the cambelt. At least if the plastic one goes all that will happen is that the engine will overheat, but at least you get some warning. I was shown the origional plastic impellared pump which had done at least 70 k and it was perfect, so they do last if you get the OE.The car actually feels much smoother now and quieter ( it may be because i had a new cat pipe fitted at the same time) but many thanks to RK Engineering in St Agnes for doing such a tidy job. All in £360 with belt ,rollers tensioner ,antifreeze change and exhaust fitting
