  1. We currently have a Polo GTI hire car while waiting for SWMBOs TT to go in to the bodyshop. It has Bridgestones on too and they completely ruin the car. The engine is very quite on the move and all you can hear is tyre noise. It's so bad that you can't hear the stereo, mind you that isn't particularly good quality either.
  2. Thanks for both of your replies. Somehow I manage over 12k miles per year, not sure how I do that though! The school run is generally a straight run there and back with no stationary traffic. Neither of the two diesels that I've had have gone into limp mode with this type of usage, can be a bit chilly though as the A6 just manages to get up to temperature as I'm coming into the drive in this weather. The A6 averages about 35mpg and we also have a Mk1 Audi TT and this averages about 29mpg on the mostly the same types of journeys. These are calculated from brim to brim fills over 12 months.
  3. I am planning on changing my Audi A6 2.7TDI Avant shortly for an Octavia vRS. I've driven a TDI estate belonging to a friend (thanks Jon ), but most of my journeys are pretty short, (school run and weekly shop), probably about 10-15 miles and I always have a nagging doubt in the back of my mind about the DPF blocking up. I had a CC 2.0 TDI before the A6 and it seemed to do a regen quite often, although I have never actually noticed this on doing it. So the question is, what mpg can be achieved in the real world driving a vRS TSI? Is 35mpg achievable this type of usage? I would be looking for a car with sat nav, heated leather and cruise control. I think that the 230 version is just about in my price range, is any of that kit standard on those, or are they the same spec as the 220? Also, is the 230 worth looking for or should I just look for a TSI?
  4. Glad my old post helped you. The rear wiper motor probably has screenwash inside it. It's a pretty common issue unfortunately, but easily fixed with a replacement motor. Stripping and cleaning the old one may work for a while, but I replaced mine with new and the problem never came back while I owned the car.
  5. Last time I bought one of those from the dealers it was only about £15.
  6. Thanks for that I've only seen translations like that for Geordie until now I never used to change sump plugs either, until relatively recent VAG group cars (Mk1 A3 onwards) where the sealing washer only comes with the plug.
  7. Probably a silly question, but have you been to your local dealer or TPS? I don't remember them being massively expensive and at least they should be able to supply the right one.
  8. My Mum has a low mileage BBZ engined 1.4 16v Fabia. I think it she is probably its second elderly owner and it drinks oil like its going out of fashion. It now also blows out blue smoke on start up if its been stood for a while. Normally I would assume valve stem oil seals would cause this, but because its only done 39,000 miles I'm also wondering if the oil separator on the back of the block needs cleaning out/replacing.
  9. Number 9 is not just the leveling control unit, it is also the ballast for the xenon lamp. Number 8 is the igniter.
  10. It may depend on which side has failed as I think that the passenger side also controls the self leveling.
  11. The wire that energises the magnetic clutch rubbed through and broke close to the back of the compressor. Once the garage found the cable and spliced it back together all was well.
  12. Just replace the fob part with the buttons (assuming that you key is the flip type). The part of the key with the blade also has the transponder for the immobiliser and doesn't appear to have been affected as it will still start the car. The fob part with the buttons can be recoded without a trip to the dealers.
  13. Saltburn is by the sea, but that looks like its been in it!
  14. I've bought some pattern wishbones once before, can't remember the make though, with the intention of fitting TT bushes to them. I took the rear arm bushes out and the hole was a fraction larger than in a genuine wishbone meaning that the new TT bushes were not as tight as they needed to be and slid in and out of the hole on the car when in use. I then bought replacement bushes and then refurbished my old wishbones. Pattern wishbones are probably OK as they are, with their own bushes, but not necessarily for upgrading with bushes meant for OEM.
