Thanks for both the above answers! I was hoping that would be the case... I will give it a go. There is no rev counter on my old truck. Its just got the huge clock where the rev counter should go! I would not think it would be much trouble to connect all the wires. As for it lining up.. THat's a different matter.. I had not thought of that. Not what you really want to find when its a radiator out job to get the alternator in! I will see if i can check out the fixings before i start. But there is not much room to get in and see.... Thanks again for all the comments!!

I think i may be slowly answering my own question now! I just looked on ebay to get an idea of alternator prices. I put in Felicia diesel alternators and looked at an add for Car Factors UK. AS i scrolled down it had a diagram of the back of the alternator. It has an enlarged drawing of the single plug in socket with two pins in it. This is the same as the socket on the alternator that is on my car at present. In the diagram it says the left hand pin is D+ and the right hand pin is W..... This being W = Stator and D+ = Lamp There are the same D+ and W markings on the new alternator i bought. W is a spade connector and D+ is a threaded stud. From this, i would think i may be able to cut the original connector off. And as long as i mark the wires replace them with a spade end for W and a round connector for D+. I hope someone can understand all this and maybe reassure me that this will work? Or maybe tell me to leave well alone?

The pictures on the link show the alternator in the car, and the new one i bought in error. The cable i am talking about is the one that connects to to the connector that sticks out the side of the alternator close to the radiator on the alternator that is in the car. It looks to me that this cable should connect to the spade connector in the middle of the new alternator?. The connector on the old alternator has two pins on it. I am wondering if an adaptation can be made... Or if it is just better to bite my lip and fork out for another alternator?

Hi all. I think my alternator is on the blink. I have had some signs it was failing for some time, So about 6 months ago i bought a new alternator from a web site. I gave the relevant info.. Reg, make, model and all that.. But now i have come to fit it.Its the wrong one! Not much chance of returning it now. I just wondered if any one knew if it would be possible to modify the one i have got to work in my pickup. All is right apart from one wire. think it is the wire that goes to the dash light? but i am not sure. On the alternator in the pickup at the moment, this wire has a spring clip connector on it, and connects to corresponding socket on the alternator. This is located on the SIDE of the black cap on the back of the alternator. The new alternator has a single spade connector located in a recess in the black end cap of the alternator. Just wondered if it is worth modifying it? And how? Or should i bite the bullet and get another one....

I had a bottom hose blow due to a faulty rad fan sensor, gauge went in to the red. That was about three weeks ago. i have now noticed a small damp patch under the engine when i leave the car after the twelve mile drive to work. when the engine is hot there is no sign of a leak, but once the engine has cooled a bit a small pool of water collects on the head gasket joint on the right side of the head below where the coolant pipe enters the head. the loss of coolant is minimal and the temperature stays normal. Could this be the head gasket going? If it is, does anyone know what i would be looking at price wise to have it fixed? Its a 1.9 Diesel pickup

You are right its hard to explain and it would probably be obvious if you could hear it. I can only thank you for having a pop at it. I had a problem with a strange jingling noise i thought was coming from the gearbox. After posting it on here it was sorted, I was just hoping for the same with this. -

To be honest the old truck is going like a bomb. I changed the oil changed the diesel filter and since then it has run really well. I wrote in another post about a problem i had and this never really got resolved, Its a flat spot, after i have been idling, it only happens when the engine is really hot. If i am in traffic and then pull away as i go for second gear or there abouts the engine goes flat, i can drive through it and all is good again. fine at any other time 30, 40, right up to 70 MPH no problem. Just this flat spot like i said. Dont know if this makes sense, or if it is related? -

OK thanks. i will see if i can get someone to have a listen, and get it confirmed before i get it done. Not that i doubt your judgement just as it may be expensive and i would like to double check. Thanks again. -

I am not sure if it is the tappets, I will have to make sure of what it is before i go for the cam belt and new tappets bit i think. Had a new belt not long ago and that cost a good bit so i will see if its that for sure before i get that done i think. Thanks for the info, 19 quid sound great its the labour charge that stings me. -

THe oil is new. Changed it to try and get rid of the noise, The noise is not a tapping noise it like diesel knock, i can get it to do it when i have just started and set off, At certain reves if i hold it at that it will make the noise and i can accelerate through it. It goes when the engine is warm. -

Whats that? tappets to the likes of me. Is that much of a job? Would you know roughly how much it should cost to have done? -

Its a sort of rattle, but its not something rattling its more of a knock. it happens from start up and goes after the engine has warmed up. -
Back again, Things are going wrong all at once I have had a sort of knocking noise from the engine, its a bit like pinking on a petrol car But this is a diesel. Its when i start up, it rattles, if i excelerate hard it gets wose. I changed the fuel filter as i thought it was that blocked but it made no difference. I have a mind that it the exhaust recycling valve thing but i dont know much about that, any ideas? any help would be appreciated .... thanks
