bad fuel consumption

hi i got a 1996 felicia and i have noticed i am getting terrible fuel consumption could the spark plugs and ignition lead cause this problem cause there easy chaneged or are all felicias bad on fuel its a 1.3 petrol.

cheers im due MOT on october and for the sake of 30 quid they will tell me if there is a problem i am currently getting around 30mpg which is not on will do all of the following you have told me cheers.

Im currently getting 35mpg which is mostly town driving and that was with a dirty air filter, knackerd spark plugs and recently a hole in the exhaust.

Can get it up to about 50 mpg on a really slow long run... but generally get about 45mpg on a motorway run.

the fist thing to do wen your getting increase fuel consumsion is to check the spark plugs and HT wires, also it helps if you clean your carb every so oftern and a good rule of thum is air filter must be replace when you see it get dark, if you did all of this and still get bad fuel economy then check ignision timing, a slightly advance timing worked for me if still getting bad economy then there is something wrong in you engine and you need to take it to be checked

i'm now getting bad mileage on my car, probably due to the fact that i adjusted the ignition timing back to normal and tune the carb wrong, but before that, uff, that car was a dream, spent very little on gas, guess i'll have to do maintenances and adjust the time with the vacuum instead of the timing gun (thats the way i did it before when it was good) and replace spark plugs and HT wire, see if thats the problem (and fiddle less with the car when is running good lol)

If you've got mechanical timing, try this:-

1) Get engine fully hot, say 10 miles at your NSL.

2) With the engine running, loosen the clamp bolt, and swing the timing until the idle speed is highest. Tighten the clamp bolt.

3) Use the throttle quadrant stop to reduce the idle speed to about 750rpm.

This always gave me and my mates good power and fuel mileage on everything from a standard Mini 998cc up to a Rover 2600 and an Escort 1600 running twin Weber 40DCOEs! (relatively speaking for the Escort)

i did that once, dint work whe i did that i was getting a lot of knocks, but i will advance the timing a bit when i change the spark plug ht wires and clean the carb...

and youre dead on timing and trim are everything (if spark is good) when it comes to good gas mileage and power

35 mpg, think thats bad am getting 25 mpg more or less on a 98 GLi after a filter and oil change, but not to worry am going to attempt to dismantel a bit more of the car this weekend. having said that im london based so no chance of 40mpg. good luck sorting yours if youve got any tips when ur done would be gratefull.

Does your temp guage register at half way mark when operating normally? Your temp sensor doubles up for fuel injection system

Hi - I'm having trouble with my fuel economy. The tempertaure gauge on my Fabia 1.4 MPi always goes up to half way and stay there. I that what it should do - or is there a problem? I am getting very bad fuel economy

i tried that last week and ran it for a week, the idle is not smoother, when i accelerate i get a lot of knock of predetonation even after i enriched the mix running it slightly rich @ idle and the cluch felt slippery

what i did now is accelerate to 2000rpm checked vacuum reading (22) and adjusted time until idle and 2000rpm (wich is basicaly the rpm's i run at) had the same and the highe vacuum...

now i got more power, i don't get as much knocks (only when i'm turning slowly a corner and accelerating out in 3rd or 4th gear) and the cluck feel like it grips

but i'm pretty sure i'm still getting bad fuel economy, and i noticed a little bit of oil in the plugs, so i guess i have burned valves (due to the wrong clearance i fixed) or i have to fix the valve seals
