Fabia heater / air con control panel replacement - how to with pics

Recently, the heater / air con control panel failed on my wife's car. It didn't light up with the headlights, the recirc and air con buttons stopped working, and so did the temperature control. The fan still worked (different circuit), as did the vent direction control (which is mechanical!) It was as if fuse 12 had failed, even though it was fine...

This job needs the entire lower section of the dash out, so start by following the Technical Guides for clearing the vent fan internals (link) and steps 1-7 of the one for evaporator temp sensor replacement (link). The latter tells you most of the tools you'll need, although you will also need a ratchet driver or a very short handle for your Torx heads, as some of the screws are in tight spaces. The part number of the heater / air con panel is 6Q0 819 445, and I got mine for about GBP60 delivered from a scrappy. I apologise for the rubbish cameraphone pics, however as some on here will know, my decent camera's in the shop... There is a printer-friendly pdf version attached at the end of this post if you need it.

1. With just the centre section of the lower dash remaining, remove the stereo and tray / cupholders underneath. I won't tell you exactly how to do this as it's a minor security risk, but it's easy enough:

dash_fig01.JPG

2. Next, pull / push out the trim either side of the stereo, and the blanking plates above it:

dash_fig02.JPG

3. Take care to disconnect any switches:

dash_fig03.JPG

4. Undo the two retaining screws for the heater / air con panel:

dash_fig04.JPG

5. ...and carefully pull the cover of the panel off, pushing the panel itself into the dash:

dash_fig05.JPG

6. Unscrew the two screws shown:

dash_fig06.JPG

7. ...the one at the back of the stereo cage:

dash_fig07.JPG

8. ...this one above the clutch pedal:

dash_fig08.JPG

9. ...and this one behind the little cover above the steering wheel:

dash_fig09.JPG

10. The centre section of the lower dash should now just pull away:

dash_fig10.JPG

11. Put the bit of dash somewhere where it won't get in the way or get damaged, and swap out the heater / air con panel:

dash_fig11.JPG

That's it! Put everything back in reverse order, and all should be well. The job took me about 90 minutes from start to finish, including the steps in the other two TGs. I found it took a couple of uses of all the controls before fault codes stopped being recorded - not sure why this should have been, but it didn't stop it working so shouldn't be an issue if you don't have VAG-COM etc.

I'd say three figures probably, although I don't know that. Don't think I trawled round scrapyards for mine, though - I just emailed some and got quotes. I ordered Saturday and it arrived Monday. Fitted Wednesday, and the rest is a bit like the Craig David song from the POV of my extremely pleased wife! ;):D

Thought I would let you know I finally got around to changing mine yesterday. Again thank you very much for the very useful guides!

Extra info I would add would be as follows:

On the first photograph I had a couple of screws to undo just underneath the blanking switches - on your photograph you don't appear to have any screws in those holes.

Lastly I undid all 4 screws on the underside at step 4 although I'm not sure if I needed to.

The part number for my 2001 Fabia TDI was 6YO 820 045 A and cost me £50 delivered from Devonutopia. Online breakers wanted between £50 and £70 + delivery.

Skoda wanted £198.93 for this part - maybe plus VAT too (I had already switched off at this point) and said it would need to be programmed to the car but mine appears to be working fine so far.

Jason recommened that when I fitted the new unit I had the dials in the same position as how they were left on the old one I removed.

hello, just had to go this myself, didn't need the guide, i just removed the tray below radion and the cover over the unit, and disconnected the purple clip for the heater blower direction and then i prised out the white clips at the four corners was much easier than removing the whole lot,

Just out of interest, how did you get at the connectors at the back of the unit? They're shrouded on all sides by the dash, unless yours has been modified in some way...?

I know it's moons old, but I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I wanted to do this last month on my mission to eliminate rattles (which is still ongoing), but couldn't quite figure it out. I shall be using this guide this weekend I think :-)

Hi, I've got two problems with my Fabia A/C and heater. Firstly the A/C won't even come on or light up when you press the button. Secondly the heater seems to have only two positions being OFF when fully anti-clockwise and then fully on when moved 1/10 of rotation to the right.

Do you think that either of these would be fixed by changing the control panel, or is it likely to be something else?

Cheers, Steve.

Hello there.. Writing from Denmark, therefore the bad english. I'm having same problem as the last reply. My heater changes between cold and hot when the dial is turned aprox 75% towards the hottest setting. I have been searching the internet with no result when a friends told me of this forum. Does anyone in here has a suggestion to a solution???

First of all have it scanned with VCDS to see if any faults are stored, you could also try resetting the heater flaps at the same time as the control unit 'forgets' where on/off is positioned. cheers - Stuart

Hi all, this seems to be the problem the 03 fabia tdi I just bought the wife has. I drove it today, quite a journey, a very hot one actually! It seems the climate control is not working as it should. I should explain! The heater, when set to anywhere but stone cold, is blowing red hot, which is nice for about 2 mins, thinking it will find its own temperature as it should and keep it constant, NO! I initially thought, the front in-car air temp sensor was faulty, but I then found if you turn it fully over to the coldest setting, it still blows warm, unless you frantically move all the dials then it finally, after a while, starts blowing cold air, I then thought either control unit, or the dials/switches, as I messed further, I found the air recirc button when pressed lit up and then cancelled, no matter where the air was asked to be directed. I know that some or most of climate control systems will turn the air recirc off when set to the demister setting, correct me if I'm wrong.

I am sure it is down the controls as pictured at the top of this post, thanks for the very good explanation on how to do the job, by the way! Unless anyone thinks otherwise with my situation, I will order a new heater & A/C switch panel and hope for the best!

Someone has mentioned to me, that it could be the external air temperature sensor is faulty, but I am not sure that could be it, as the problems I have are all to do with the temperature inside the cabin. If I am wrong please tell me!

If I am barking up the wrong tree, please let me know, before I spend time and money on a car I am rapidly losing faith in. I think I may have bought a lemon, and I'm a mechanic. Yes, even we get caught out from time to time, I trusted the seller far too much! But all the problems I am experiencing are ones that you won't find out until you live with it! Still, got it for a bargain, so don't mind spending a bit on it, the bride loves them, so I've got to try my best before breaking it for spares!

I might just add, although my diagnostic equipment is quite primitive, it does not show up any faults, neither ongoing or pending ones.

Kind Regards!

Craig!

On a 51 plated Fabia 1.4 Comfort, the temperature control knob has erratic (usually zero) effect on internal cabin temperature, although all other HVAC functions appear to operate correctly, including distribution flaps, blower speed, recirc & A/C controls (but the illuminated A/C button doesn't produce cold air)!

G-forces when cornering appear to make a difference, so I'm expecting a loose control flap to be causing the problem which is similar to the previously reported issues of permanently hot air!

Assuming the air temperature is blended from heated & ambient air, is the flap actuated mechanically or electrically? How will replacing the front panel cure this?

Thanks in anticipation.

:( Hi All, The heater flaps are behind the glovebox near the footwell and are mechanical flaps operated by a small unit which has a 12v motor and a potensiometer inside as well as some reduction gears, the front control unit 'forgets'or is missinformed what position the flaps are and gets confused, what the main dealer does (or someone with VCDS)is tell the control unit to actuate the flaps open and closed and store the resistances of the potensiometer so it knows whats open and closed. The heater on our Fabia is currently acting up and I have reset the flaps a few times and it still goes faulty :S Has anybody any ideas of what it could be ? cheers - Stuart

 Update, It looks as though its the flap motor in the LH side of the centre console which controls the heat (usually full ON) as the potentiometer on the bosch unit gives inconsistant readings for the heater control unit. cheers - Stuart

Many thanks for all your help everyone!

This sounds like a silly question, but is it necessary to remove the whole centre dash trim to access the control panel plug? It looked as though removing the panel retaining screws would allow it to be pulled forward, out of the dash and remove the plug from behind.... Or are the sides of the control panel tucked behind the centre dash trim?
