Help! My EPC (Emissions) or CEL (Check Engine Lamp) is on.

Help! My EPC (Emissions) or CEL (Check Engine Lamp) is on.

There's a very simple thing to check first: your brakelights. If they don't work, check the brake pedal switch. It's a common fault. Also have a look for anything obvious like a loose or failed HT lead, or an audible air leak if that's appropriate for your car.

Other than that, you really need to get your car scanned by someone with VAG-COM (VCDS), a VAS computer (the one dealers have), or a OBD-II scanner.

Of these, the VAS or VCDS/VAG-COM is your best bet as it can read and decode more faults from the car.

You have several ways of getting the car scanned:

* You can pay a Skoda (or other VAG) dealer. Typically this will cost at least £40.

* You can pay an independent garage. This will be a bit cheaper, but unless the garage specialises in VAG cars, it will probably only have a generic scanner.

* You can ask here in the VAG-COM and diagnostics forum. Look at the member map. If there's someone near you, send them a PM, and negotiate a price- which may just be a pint or two.

* You could obtain VAG-COM/VCDS or a code reader yourself. This can cost as little as £20ish for an ebay cable and a limited downloadable version of VAG-COM, but a fully licenced version (with full capability and support from Ross-Tech) costs more.

For later cars (Octavia II and Superb II), you need a CAN-capable scanner or a version of VAG-COM and appropriate genuine Ross-Tech cable that supports CAN-only cars.

A scan really is the only way to try to diagnose a CEL/EPC light, and often odd running problems as well. If you post the logs from the scanner on this site, someone will have a chance of solving your problem. Otherwise, it's just wild guesswork and you could be checking and changing things for ever.

I have a 1.8T ARX engine 4x4 elegannce 2003 plate car.

I keep getting the lambda light. Have replaced the secondary air pump -- was busted, and replaced some of the rubber pipe between the air filter and the engine, so there is no leak.

Can anyone help??? (see fault codes below)

I did a VCDS scan and here are the findings:

P0420 - Catalyst efficiency low occurs when the pre and post O2 sensor readings are too similar, indicating that the catalyst is not doing its job. The fault here could be a partially blocked catalyst, and that could very well be the cause of the all your engine related fault codes. I would start by using VCDS to take some fuel trim readings, but P0420 does usually mean that a new catalyst is required. Beware of cheap non-genuine parts though. They're often inferior quality to the genuine one.

Hi Guys,

I have been struggling with a problem no one has been able to diagnose from 6 months. I have been getting Emissions Workshop form a long time. This is what I did to try to fix it:

1. Cleaned EGR

2. Changed MAF

3. Changed N75 valve

4. Changed  N18

5. Changed vacuum hoses

6. Got the turbo cleaned

I got the diesel filter replaced with bosch filter but I have noticed lot of air bubbles in the pipe carrying diesel... Can that be a reason for this error and loss of power at 3000 rpm

Can anyone help me out with this... its becoming really annoying for me...

THANKS

I just bought a 00 Skoda Octavia Estate 1.6 petrol, all was fine for 2 days until the traction control light came on, it was an intermittent issue and on my way to the mechanic the engine management light came on. The garage hooked it up to two different diagnostics sets and could find no fault. The car was reset and it was fine for a day until the engine management light has come back on. The car is preforming fine no problems. Has anyone else come across this?

you can delete the sai system and get it map out or a resistor, you can also delete the rear lambda, but that will need turned off in the map. the rear lambda on the 1.8t is just to check if the cat is working and not used for fuelling
