Hi,

As yours has a fan then natrually it's one of the original Mk I PS3's. The fan normally runs at it's slowest setting the keep the huge heatsink inside at a constant working temperature. Things that may change this are either an increase in the room temperature or a blockage in the air flow exhaust vent. Normally though it's simply caused by dust build up inside the unit over time. If I were you I'd take it apart and clean it out with a small paintbrush and a low power vac.

Or the quick method;

The PS3 has a hidden setting to make the fan run a full tilt. This might help in the interim if you don't feel good about cracking it open..

Did it on my one and have probably increased it's lifespan by a fair bit. Needless to say I don't get the aircraft take off level fan noise anymore!

Cheers
