Android Apps

Yesterday my father got a HDC Desire phone to replace his broken O2 XDA Orbit II.

He is not yet got used to the new phone, but what he loved with his old one was with a small stylus you could write things in your own handwriting and it would convert it into text. He found it much faster than using a keypad etc. He used it for everything. making notes, reminders, texts, etc.

So is there an app out there that can use your handwriting (or print writing) to write things on the screen?

There are a couple of apps that mimic the old Palm graffiti, would they be of any use?

Yep, he mentioned something about that it was old palm software.

Quick search on the Android Market brings up "Graffiti for Android" that's free, as well as a trial version of a pay app...

May be worth a download, it's been that long since I had a palm that I'm not sure I could remember how to write with it, but I bet it wouldn't take long to get back into int...

Few things...

LauncherPro - Awesome :)

Autokiller.... get rid - android is perfectly fine at managing its own resources.. by using a killer, all it really does is kill an app/service off and then it has to start up again chewing up more CPU/mem than required.

SetCpu - handy app BUT just leave it be unless your overclocking (its better just to use a custom kernel)

Thanks for the comments, I stuck to task-killer in the end. I find it does help to clear apps I have been using as Im guessing it doesn't automatically close them once I finish with them.

As for setcpu, I under-clock the system when I have low batt. Stock speed when batt is full.. I know that batteries can be killed quite quickly if it doesn't keep on high charge.

A new app I found is "sketcher". its quite fun.. give it 5-10mins and it can get really addictive.

Camera360 - try it! so much better..

Ultimate stopwatch

realcalc - a scientific calculator, much like the casio ex83 (something).

Try:

Aix Weather Widget. Still in Beta testing but developed by a friend of mine and seems much more useful/informative than other weather widgets.

Just been playing a cool little (and free) game called Cordy. Search on the market.

I used to have an app on my old Windows mobile phone called MemoryMap (basically allows you to have OS explorer maps on your smartphone).

MemoryMap have been nagged constantly on their forums to bring out an Android version as many people want to ditch their old WinMo phones. Recently they have stated they're developing the app for Android platform, however I think they've missed the boat!

On market if you search for 'MM Tracker' this is a small app that uses the original map files and in my opinion is way better and faster than the original!

There's a free version so you can trial it without having to splash out on the full (sub fiver) version!

Absolutely invaluable if you love walking/hiking etc..

I found this whilst browsing the Android Marketplace last night.

http://www.appbrain.com/app/dailyroads-voyager/com.dailyroads.v

I've not had time to try it out on the road - but from it's write up and having a play around the house it looks pretty good - would save buying a specialised one.

I would fit give it a try on my drive up to Lancashire later today, but SWMBO has borrowed my mobile as she needs the Sat Nav.

Ahh well - will try it out on the drive to work Monday and let you know.

Bump. If people could post up the latest best apps. The site Life of Android is good but some apps are out of date. Had a look at Cordy but it's massive and I don't have enough space to install it.

Hi All,

I decided quite early on that the default music player on my HTC Desire could be bettered and so I went out there to look for one.

I found a great (although you have to pay for it) alternative;

It's called PowerAMP http://powerampapp.com/

Available to download from the market and free for the first 15 days - after which I think you'll be reaching for your credit card as it's absolutely brilliant!

Fully configurable library with playlists (which are very well laid out!), built in graphic EQ with crossfade, selection of skins, available in a variety of widget sizes, sleep timer... and so on and so on..

About a fiver, and worth every penny. Works brilliantly in the car over BT too..

Cheers

A quick search found ShoutOut but you'll have to try it yourself! ;)

Currently using Handcent sms at the moment. Will see how I get on with it....

Announcify by Tom Tasche does this too.

Spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to find an app to simply edit a photo. Just want to scribble out a number plate before posting a car pic. How hard could that be?

Adobe Photoshop express in market?

no, make it mono or sepia but.nothing useful......

Bumping this. Any new apps that are worth getting?

I got one the other day called AirDroid. You start it up with WiFi on and type your phones IP address into your PC browser and you can view/send text, your phone book etc in the browser. Pretty cool.

If you use busses at all then Catch That Bus is really handy. Also works if you are in an area that you do not know you can view the timetables etc and see what busses are due next. Used it last year in Wales to see if we could get a bus back to campsite.

GTA 3 is also out for Android phones. Works and looks really good on my Sensation.

I also have one called WhatGas which lists petrol stations and the price of fuel. Also very handy!

Any good blacklist caller apps? I know I can send them to voice mail, but I want this one to think the number is now dead.

So, recently updated my phone again (DHD) to the new ICS rom (awesome by the way, credits to lordmod and others),

Few apps to mention if I haven't already -

Tapatalk - thats if you like to go on forums often etc.

HDR Camera+ - simple (but works) HDR function for the phone, image is good enough, not perfect but good enough. else try Pro HDR Camera, thats a bit more techy and should give better results (not tried, just assumed).

Paper camera - does some neat arty functions, well worth the 10p in the xmas sale.

Pano - Panoramic camera function, one word, awesome. I haven't tried others but this does excellently (albeit a little slow), unlimited photo slices, landscape or portrait, examples:

PANO_20111225_125202.jpg

Tastecard app - for taste card. enough said really

4Shared - Like dropbox.

Games

Gravity - really annoyingly challenging but fun non the less, bit different to other puzzle games.

Scrabble - as expected, in addition to the function of "best word" trick :D, try it.
