changing mileage

Recommended Posts

Hi i was wondering if anyone had ever changed the mileage display on their cars?....Before anyone starts on about it being illegal,it only becomes illegal if you try and SELL the vehicle WITHOUT informing the new keeper that its been changed. So for you own personal use it perfectly legal. My octy vrs is bit high now and i want to lower it a bit but dont know how,any help would be appreciated.

Eh? So what possible benefit could there be? If it's "a bit high now" & you want to "lower it a bit", do you think that will make the components last longer? I'm confused....

well you can see the mileage through the window of the car as its always on and you cant switch it off,its an 05 plate and i want it lower to suit the year of the car.......its a personal thing.

iirc, it *can not* be modified via vag-com.

As mileage figures are recorded for each MOT, when I guess if one were to crash your car, and had told your insurance company you were doing say 10k a year the figure was closer to 20k, then one might find ones insurance was void too.....

What mileage has your 05 reg vRS got on it now.

I sold my Octy2 55 reg with getting close to 100K miles on it for a very tidy sum. I cannot think why you would want to do this anyway. VAG-COM (VCDS) cannot alter mileage. You can do it with a third party tool like vag-tacho but the real mileage is still recorded in the ECU and cannot be altered. A fellow briskodian recently bought a Fabia vRS that turns out had really done well in excess of the mileage being displayed on the cluster.

OMFG !!! Why on earth would you want to do this you turd ?! I mean if you wasnt happy with the mileage when you brought it , why on earth did you buy it ?

I feel sorry for who never buys your car after you !! If i came to look at it and you told me this i would just walk away straight away ! If its WELL looked after and SERVICED as it should be why do this !!!

Theres only one reason for this no matter what you say is to con the next buyer ! Other-wise why do it ?!

What would you say to the next buyer oh the cars done 150000 but ive changed it to 70000 to make it look better ?!

Get a grip ! and be happy with it !

Is there any way to alter the Fuel Gauge so that it always reads full? Just to make me feel better.

Seriously though, I'm actually quite proud of my mileage reading. I have a photo of the speedo on 70 at exactly 70,000 miles, another at 80 and 80,000 and again at 90 and 90,000. I'm now on 97,500 and wondering if I'll be able to take the 100,000 mile photo without losing my licence.

You can recalibrate the fuel gauge with VCDS.. I did it on my Bora and ran out of diesel twice :D

Maybe you can alter the ratio of the tacho so your diesel shows as revving the same as a Type-R? To make you feel better?

How can one determine what the real mileage is? can vag-com do this, or is this a dealer only feature? I am just thinking for when I come to buy my next car (which will after my current Octy has fallen into pieces, and not before!)

The rest of the car should give an indication of miles, unless it has been replaced.

VCDS can check on some cars (diesels - some with EDC15 and I think all with EDC16) so if you're buying a 1.9 or 2.0TDI you'll be OK. Although it can be changed there too..

There's no logs in the ECU for the petrols that I know of.

So if I wanted to be nosy and check my car, any idea where I go? plus I don't have the latest version of vcds (not sure if that would make a difference or not).

Cheers :-)

Yes it does make a difference, you need a newish version of VCDS. Go into Applications and then into EDC15/16 mileage I think it's labelled.

I'd say, its a fair bet this car would never sell in the Briskoda "cars for sale" section after this post....no mater how low the mileage :)

Sorry to bump an ancient thread, but I am wondering about this because I am interesting in changing my cluster out, and would like the new cluster to display the CORRECT mileage. It is also a MK1 Octavia, but not a VRS.

Also the guy who was going on about taking a picture at 90MPH for 90,000 miles and 100MPH for 100,000 miles made me chuckle. My diesel is about to reach 170,000 miles, recon I should give it a go? :D

You could go for 17 MPH
