Car won't start any ideas?

Recommended Posts

Mk2 vrs Tfsi

Started fine this morning for the drive to work but I went to it later the only light on the dash was the door open light. All other electrics work fine but it just won't turn over.

I thought maybe the immobilizer so am heading back to work to try another key but I doubt it's this as at least some engine lights would show, also taking vcds.

Frazzled ECU?

It maybe worthwhile taking the battery completely off, leave it for 30' then put it back on, see if it's a glitch in the system (Don't forget your radio code though!)

Took battery off, still wo't turn over, also tried other key.

Here is a scan, it doesn't look good for the Ecu :(

Gut feeling is that's a fuse or relay. If your ECU, ABS and Airbags are all unreachable then I suspect that something powering them has failed.

Thanks Ben, I was hoping you would answer. I will check out the manuals for the relay and pray it's not the Ecu.

i'd check the battery under load, re-charge and try again 12.1v looks a tad low for a fully charged battery to me. I had similar issues a while back and it turned out to be the battery. It was showing 12.2 volts, but once you put it under load, zilch! Swapped for a known good battery and away we went! Much cheaper to try this first than either a dealer or new ECU.

Just remember if it is the battery you will still have fault warning lights on the dash until you have driven it for a while (can't remember which of them) some one will be able to advise you

But I only have one light on the dash and that's the door open light. I would have thought a dead battery would still display all the lights.

Check out the Terminal 15 power control relay - that's a probable cause of your difficulty.

Thanks I will take a look and possibly order a new one, I read a bit about this through google search. I presume it's in the engine bay but iirc there are about 3 relays any idea which is the correct one?

Not necessarily, there maybe enough juice to put the lights on, but not a high enough current to turn the engine & close the requisite relays to get it to turn.

What I'd like to know is why are we still dealing with silly fuses, when they are so out of date? Surely we should be dealing with MCBs by now!

Ok will put jump leads on tomorrow and see if any change

MCBs would be very nice

Really wouldn't advise jump leads.

MCB's are seldom used on cars because fuses cost about 0.01p each. MCB's are much more expensive!

Thinking about it I have just got back from a three week holiday and the car started up no problems at all surely a dud battery would have flattened by then?

Its the leftmost one on the power control board IIRC. Its relay B1. Check out the feeds to it (switching feed to the coil when ign turned on and permanent feed). You should hear it click when ign on.

Thankyou will have a good listen

I just wish my car were outside now to try it :S

Checking the Golf Haynes manual I may have hit gold!

The Drive train canbus controls airbag control unit, abs unit, Ecu and steering control unit. Thats pretty much all it controls on my car and all of those have no comms on my fault code list. I now need to find out what controls them.

Update:

Ben and Hauptmann you were correct, It was actually an ignition relay, one of two installed under the dash with the number 460 on top.

Took to local Indy

Price for relay: 8.38 +2h labour + fault scan + vat = £162.69 ouch!

Cheers for the help

Thanks for the update.

Result

£162 may seem a lot, but just think how much it could have been if it was the ECU etc...

Exactly and also if the garage was rubbish and took days to find the fault at my expense :o
