Car TAX/SORN grace period

Right.. one would assume there is a grace period between car tax expiring and the DVLA sending out a fine, but what is it?

Im in the situation that my car has been off the road, the MOT expired last month, the tax expires this month.. the MOT is due to be done in the next week, or the week after as worst case.

Is it worth declaring sorn for what would possibly be under 7 days? emoticon-0144-nod.gif

We appreciate that it is not always possible to tax your vehicle on time,

for example; if you are waiting for insurance or are getting a MoT for

your vehicle, you may not be able to renew your tax on time. You, as the

registered keeper, will not be committing an offence as long as you either

tax the vehicle or make a SORN within 14 days of your current tax disc

or SORN running out. You must keep your vehicle off the public road

during this time as you will be committing an offence if it is used or

parked on the public road.

taken from the registrationcertificate and you - sent by the dvla or http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/ins160ni_061109.pdf

That looks like it's a document from Northern Ireland. Are the rules the same in the rest of the UK....?

It's the same in the rest of the UK.

Here it is from direct.gov.uk

When SORN isn't needed

SORN isn’t needed if:

* you sell the vehicle

* you scrap the vehicle or pass it to a scrap dealer

* your insurance company has written off the vehicle

* you take the vehicle abroad permanently

* you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle

* you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days

* your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998

if you can prove that it has been paid for ie the reciept off the webiste you officaly now have a 5 day window in which to get the tax though the post and dispaly it.

I got away with 2 weeks with the mongrel. Tax ran out 31st March, and I sorn'd it mid April when I realised the car wasn't going to be back on the road soon. At the end of April I got it MOT'd and taxed - Had to take my V5 to the P.O to get it taxed as once you SORN the reminder thing DVLA send you becomes invalid.

I knew that - but what I didn't like was the fact that the DVLA site open to the public said "NO TAX" , but the official site said Taxed . Id have thought that the info to the public would be up to date and wanted assurance that some PC just out of nappies would have me jumping through hoops to prove it was .Every time in the past I've taxed on line ,the data has been updated almost next day . Would just be my luck to get PC jobsworth on his bad day .
