I've had this for a while but totally forgot about it, as I already jack my car where the document says to. But some recent threads have reminded me to post it up, and answer the age old query of where exactly do I jack my Mk1 Octavia. This is taken from the official Skoda workshop documentation. Someone might want to make this a sticky or something......

Raise vehicle

Raise vehicle with a lift platform and a workshop jack.
     
The arms of the lift platform must be positioned under the frame side rail.

WARNING
-Under no circumstances may the arms of the lift platform or jack be positioned under the sill, the engine, the gearbox, the front or rear axles.
-It must only be raised with a workshop jack at the indicated jacking points arrows.
-To avoid damage use a suitable rubber or wood insert.

Both jacking up points at front are located on both front frame side rails at the height of the marking on the sill.

WARNING
-Never start the engine or engage a gear when the vehicle is raised, while even one driving wheel is still in contact with the ground.
-It is important to support the vehicle with suitable supporting blocks if you wish to work under the vehicle.

I have always positioned the ramp feet on the sill edges (the part where the standard jack slots on)

It doesnt cause an issue as normally ramp pads are quite large and made of rubber, never folded or flattened one off, plus I would think being lifted up level helps.

Howerver a trolley jack with a small head wont spread the load enough and will cause damage.

lol, you would need to laminate them at the very least

So the axle stads should be placed in those positions can they be placed directly or do they need wood as well?

The front points are ok for your average axle stand as the U-shaped cup on the axle stand fits nicely under the ridge bit.

For the rear ones I would probably try and use a small block of wood on the stand otherwise all the weight is on the tips of the U-shaped cup on top of the stand.

Yeah that's pretty much what I do. I use a small but chunky bit of wood for the rear, and a long thin bit on the front normally. I have just sat the front on the axle stands before, as like Chicken says it's pretty much the right shape to spread the load.

I do love the sound of the wood splitting under load!

so where do people actually lift the car with a trolley jack to get the axle stands under?

Useful info.  :thumbup:  I was under the impression that the rails that ran towards the front of the car (which appear to be highlighted as the front jacking point) were not that strong and contained wiring, but evidently I must be mistaken. :S

Remember the TT jacking points are not designed to be used singly with a trolley jack. They are designed to fit a four-arm lift and should only be used in this way.

The fuel lines run through the drivers side one.

Am i being daft ??? where would you put a single trolley jace then ??? same places ???


when someones bored would they be up for adding a couple of photos where they put the jack (trolley not scissor type)

My thoughts exactly, I always look for the best place to jack the car up but obviously this is also the best place for the stands.
I tend to jack up on the sills( been doing it for years and never damaged one) then put the stands on the proper jacking points on the frame

I'll re-iterate how important this advice is...

I recently had some work done at a local VAG specialist, who should know better really...but they jacked My Octy 1 VRS up on a four-poster ramp on the sills.

Result = a pair of crushed sills at the front. Rear sills seemed to be ok. Not only had it 'scrunched' the front sills to a shape resembling the ramp's feet, it folded the seams right over to a 90 degree angle too!  :devil:

So at their expense, the sills had to be repaired - a local 'smart repair' place managed to pull the damage out without cutting / welding at least and now they're back to how they should be.

But just for other Briskoda posters - I've seen the damage this causes, so BE CAREFUL! And if you take your car to a garage, be sure to point this out...

Wish i had seen this before the local grage bent my sills and put a lump in my back seat floors, any ideas how i can get rid of the buldge in my floor now

Sometimes you can't win even if you take exra care and do it properly.  Used quality trolley javk and axle stands with 4" 2"x4" wooden blocks at all 4 jacking points.  Finished work lowered car carefully and noticed I had split the sill at the jacking point!

I made 4 wood blocks with a slot in and gave them to the tyre fitter before he started because the first time he folded the sills over with his ultra modern 4 point lift

i have copies of thes in the car for the mechanic lol plus it winds him up  :p especially since he's a mate who semi crushed a lip grr tool at times good job labours for free or at worst in exchange for pizza  :)
