In doubt w Thule fixpont set on 5dr MkI....

Recommended Posts

Hi lads,

i'd like to ask someone who has Thule roofbar set on her/his 5dr Octavia MkI. w fixpoints

and the feet are sitting right on the edge of the roof

to send/post me some photos about the box of the footpack AND the fitting kit!

The story behind:

i just bought a set from a guy in the UK on the ebay recently. Ha said it was on a Fabia. Aero bar 860, fitting kit 3003 and footpack 753 makes the set. I went to the local Halfords, got the original boxes opened and matched up with mine ones: they are the right things, the same are listen in their catalogue.

But.

When i fit the kit to the car the plastic feet are a good 10-15mm away from the roof. The clamps are holding tight, but looks pretty ugly that you can see the fitting kit sticking out of the bottom of the feet.

So.

I contacted Thule they said in a very short answer that if it's tight it's OK, don't worry, it has to be like that.

I'm in doubt with this becaus

- 1.: looks wrong, never seen any Octy w a set looking like this,

- 2.: on their website they are talking about XT low profile kit, but the same No.s (3003 and 753 and 860 or 760 bar).

So i have the feeling if i change the footpack or the fitting kit it'll be OK. But as the clamps can be shorter the feet can be different insde too, mounting the clamps higher.

Ahhh whatever some photo or advice would be pretty much useful (the Halford guys said that they fitted a kit to a 5dr MkI. ca. 3 months ago and that was like mine. But their catalogue never mentiones that XT Low Profile thing...).

Why i can't accept the answer "use it like this"? Well for first i'm maximalist, everything should have to be like it was engineered/planned originally :) . For 2nd there will be a 5000km journey in August from the ROI to Hungary and back and the kit like as it is now LOUD. I know how loud it should have to be, but this over 70km/h is disturbing, annoying and makes you tired very fast. Plus there will be a 480litre box on it and wouldn't want to lose it on the middle of the german Autobahn.

So looking for solution and would appretiate any help please.

Sorry for the lenght and thx for listening.

Peter

Hey man, sorry for replying to such an old thread but I just came across this same problem today with my 5dr Mk1 (2001) and I'm wondering if you ever fixed this or got any info? I've bought the exact same Thule set (after checking their site) and I'm wondering which exact footpack would fit the car (so I'd like to stay with the fitting kit 3003 and square bar but just buy a new footpack).

If you (or anyone else reading this) has any ideas or help, it would be much appreciated :-)

Just wanted to update this in case anyone has the same problem - both of the footpacks work and both leave the same few centimeters between the roof and the bottom of the foot. This is really only cosmetic, the roof bars are attached strongly enough and the locks work as they should. I recommend the lower feet as the bars are then closer to the roof.

In short, original Thule bars work but the feet don't come down all the way to the roof.
