Brake Anti-Squeal Kit Part Number - anyone know it?

Recommended Posts

I've finally cracked - the horrendous "Mooing Brakes" issue on my MkI Octy vRS has finally driven me to distraction, and ive decided to pick up the anti-squeal kit to try and sort it out.

My only issue is that having trawled the forum, there seems to be two separate part numbers that come up with regard to this part.

The first is 1J0 698 998 - the cheapest i have been able to source this for is about £50 from Fleabay

The second part number is 6X0 698 998 - ive managed to source this for £35 elswhere online.

There is obviosuly quite a difference in price between the two parts, however before i spend, i want to make sure that ive got the right part for the job.

As always, your help is appreciated in advance

I fitted mine in march and the mooing stopped! (mine only cost £9 delivered though  )

STSKODA,

I take it you were lucky enough to find yours on E-Bay, hence the cheap price?

If not, i dont suppose you could suggest a retailer? I may give TPS a ring tomorrow, see what they quote.

Thanks

hi, got mine on ebay, discount vag parts or something like that

the 6X0 part is identical to the 1J0 part, tbh vauxhall also use a similar part although i don't know their part number.

TPS quote will shock you but go ahead and try them.........

why not pm the guy above and ask where he gets his?

Me too, but ended up paying £25 a week ago. There was one unit left of the ebay item i bought and made an offer of £25 which was accepted.

what does this kit consist of? looking on my ETKA it just says retrofit kit balance weight with 2 cable guides and 2 bolts, the 6X0 kit i only have listed for a lupo and the 1J0 kit for an octavia but not an AUQ engine code

kit is 2 blanace weights, with attached cable guide plate, and 2 bolts

they clamp onto rear brakes and counteract resonance in the beam - both parts fit an octy just fine and sort the mooing issue

I ended up paying £35 for the 1J0 Kit on E-bay.

My source for the 6X0 kit turned around and said that the £35 price i had seen was a clearance offer, and that he was now selling them back at their regular price of £92... err, no thanks.

Looks simple enough to fit - will report back once i get em fitted

Cheers all

Right,

The part came today, so i headed out to give it a whirl.

Managed to get the car jacked up and can see the part that this one is intended to replace, however cannot for the life of me get it removed. The only thing i can see holding it in place us a small Torx screw, which i have removed. This allows me to wiggle the arm about loose, however i cannot get it fully out. I have seen illustrations which suggest that the cable needs to be removed from the bracket, but i cant seem to find a way to get that out either, as there doesnt seem to be enough slack on the cable to work it free from the bracket.

Any idead guys? Cheers

To slacken the cable you will need to remove the plastic cover to the back of your handbrake center consul to allow access to the 2 hand brake cables, and slacken the nut to the cables. This will give you enough slack to remove the cable from the caliper end. Don't forget to re tighten afterwords.

once you have disconnected the cables the anti-moo kit can be fitted with a bit of wiggling, just undo the aforementioned torx screw and manoeuvre the old plate out and the new plate in, re-tighten and attached cables!

Cheers Bowders,

I take it that slackening off the handbrake cable is essential in order to get this done then - was hoping to avoid that if possible, but if needs must.

As the parts came with no instructions, I've attached an image showing what i think the required steps are for removing the original part, then just repeat them in reverse to fit the new part. It would be appreciated if you guys could check it over to make sure im not missing anything out.

The main thing i am wanting to check is that i dont have to touch the Handbrake Cantilever in any way, as the new part can simply be hooked around it and then screwed into place - correct?

Guess you are taling about Tee-side VW specialist. I emailed him when i saw the price was £36. He responded and states now wants £96.

For two bits of metal that look like old age pensioners hearing aids and bit much i think. :giggle:

Yep thats right mate, almost choked on me cuppa when i read his e-mail response

Just by the by, so far i havent been attempting this with the wheels off, largely because i cunningly hid my locking wheelnut away when i first bought the car in such a cunning location that its taken me hours to find the bugger again:rofl:!

As such i will have a go with the wheels off tomorrow. Out of interest, does anyone know if you definitley need to slacken the handbreak cable off, as i could see this being a bit of a faf on. Surely chocking the wheels, and leaving the handbreak off should give sufficient slack?

Cheers

Managed to get this all sorted out today.

It does indeed make things FAR easier doing this with the wheel off. You can also get the handbreak cable off without the need to adjust the cable tightness, i found that the claw end of a hammer was particularly helpful in gripping onto the cable to ease it out.

The old cable guide plate is easy enough removed from then, with a little bit of brute force and foul language doing the trick.

Getting the new one into place is a bit tricky, and two pairs of hands aided with this greatly, one to try and push it into place, the other assisting with a few gentle taps with a flathead screwdriver and hammer, to help manouver the guide plate in.

Once the first one was done, the other side took 10 minutes maximum

Most importantly, lo and behold the god awful squeal is gone!

Still cant believe suppliers are wanting £100 for what essentially is 4 pieces of rubber though :|

  • 2 months later...

Finnaly got a kit to stop this dam mooing. Got Part number 6X0698998 on ebay for £35 so was pleased with price. Fitting hopefully over weekend. Will advise if squeal has gone.

Since i bought the part its totally eliminated the horrendous and irritating "Moo!" every time i popped the car in reverse. It's only ever done it once in the three months since, after i had been driving on a dirt/gravel track, which i think was the consequence of the excessive dirt being kicked up onto the pads/discs.

Was easy enough to do as well, longest part was taking the wheels off and putting them back on. Didnt need to do any adjustments or anything, however we had a bit of a battle on fenangling the drivers side replacement on, although brute force succeeded in the end.

Very glad i got the part, although i dont think i would be saying that if i had paid £100 for it - afterall, its an issue that should never have made it out of the factory really.

Cheers
