Cambelt change on 2ltr tdi 170?

Recommended Posts

The cambelt saga goes on. I am having my Superb serviced in Spain, my handbook says 210,000km and no time limit for the belt change with periodic inspections during this period. Skoda Spain computer says the same, so who am I to say they are wrong. I phoned SUK to ask why the UK is different to the rest of Europe and was told that the Skoda head office of each country was free to amend the service schedules but not exceed the recommended milage or timescale. My Skoda dealer in Spain will not offer to do the belt change before the recomended time unless you ask. The UK recommendation for my model is 5 years and as my car is just on 5 years I asked for the belt to be changed. They replied that I was wasting my money especially as I only have 54000 miles on the clock. I will see if I can get a computer print out with the info when I get it served next week.

It's not just SUK, it is VAG as the time limits are applied to some SEAT, VW and Audi models too.

This is for the Octavia but as it shares some of the same engines as the Superb it could be of use...

Well got the superb done, belt pump and full service oil and filter, fuel filter, air and pollen done £420 all in, pretty pleased with that, got the mrs a4 170 done at the same time, mine has 60k 4years old hers 66k 5years old... Probably both would have gone on for many years but I would tend to over service anyway I suppose, but that should be it for another four years anyway

When mine needed changing I rang Skoda who said 120k or 4 years and a cost of around £500, I then rang a VAG specialist who said 80k, when I quesioned this they said Audi say 60k, VW 80k and Skoda 120k all on the same engine for that reason they recommend 80k for the price of £300 including a VAG cambelt kit and VAG water pump! They also said they put no time limit on it as we are the only country in Europe who has time limit on cambelts.

The way I saw it is I would have to get it done some time and it would be piece of mind once it was done, it was something I wouldn't have to worry about again as I couldn't see me keeping the car to 160k!

I went into my local dealer today, they quoted £459 for cam belt and water pump... Including VAT.

Four years or 120k miles...!

Hope this helps. Personally gonna get it done by a local garage... May get Skoda to price match.. You never know.... I've got to find 220 quid for an oil change on the DSG box..... Eighty quid for the oil alone...!

Happy motoring..!

Here is the recommendation for my 170 in New Zealand (probably the same as many other markets).

Is your Superb petrol or diesel, it isn't mentioned in your profile?

180,000 km's is for the petrol, the diesel is 150,000 km's according to the service book pictured above.

The diesel limit appears to be specifically for the older PD engines though. The vast majority of MkII Superbs are Common Rail (CR) which I imagine have a longer interval?

Oh and by the way the belt was perishing, cracks in under layer. The aux belt was much worse however. That's 2010 and 87k

You could probably take off a 6 month old belt and see the same. It's just normal for surface cracks between the teeth. Doesn't mean it's perishing. A marble effect on the whole of the rubber would be a sign of perishing.

Hi, yes the PD engine cambelt interval is shorter due to the stresses on the cambelt as the cam directly works a rocker arm that work the injectors directly

I had this PD170 engine 2 times, and 2 PD140's and they were good, I have a CR170 now and that is good but with a different torque curve
