Air con not working

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

The air con on my Mk II vRS as stopped working. Just blowing cool air like its on the "Econ" setting. As this is the first Skoda I've owned where the Aircon has conked, Im not sure how to approach this.

Will it be a simple re-gas or has something else broken?

Any advice please....

cheers

Could be either. The Octavia is renowned for eating compressors, and when mine went it cost about £1300 to fix, as the garage insisted on replacing some other parts, otherwise the warranty would be void.

If you are out of gas then that is a lot cheaper! So that would be my first port of call.

Mine went a year or so back and I think it cost about £500 for a new compressor from an independent AC guy. It's still working (touch wood).

"Failure of Zexel or Valeo a/c compressors is common, usually a year or two out of warranty and dealers can quote £1,304 for new compressor, condensor and expansion valve. Sometimes goodwill of about £300 offered. But cheaper to buy a new Sanden compressor for £287 and have it fitted by an independent a/c specialist for about £150. Internet forums, particularly in USA are full of postings concerning failures of Zexel and Valeo compressors, seems a case of "when not if". "

The air con hasnt worked on my 07 Octavia since last summer; took it to a highly recommended indy garage. Turned out that it was the pipe between the compressor and the evaporator(?) - quoted £375, parts, re-gas, labour & vat to sort out. Declined paid the £28 diagnostic charge, and decided to open the windows instead

Hate to say it but chances are its the compressor. Mine.went too. Quoted 1100 to fix it at the dealer. Brought down to 195 after a complaint to Skoda resulted in a sizable goodwill gesture.

My car is only 16 months old and the last 2 days there's been absolutely no difference between having the climatic on LOW with a/c on or off, I've checked the fuses tonight and no issues there, is it best to speak to dealer and if it's anything other a re-gas that's needed will it be covered by warranty?

Cheers Mike, I'm not hearing the compressor switch on or the ever so slight strain on the engine when it does so I think it's more than likely compressor related, and thanks for the details for the re-gas place, I may give Chill Out a ring just to chat it over with them.

You don't tend to hear anything on these systems as the compressor runs all the time anyway, there's not the characteristic 'click' when the compressor clutch kicked in that you got on older aircon systems. I can't hear any sound or change in engine note on mine when the 'ECON' button is pressed although the aircon works perfectly.

Just as a matter of interest, is the A/C compressor something which would be covered by the Skoda Approved used warranty?

I'm afraid I don't have my handbook to, er hand at the moment so can't check for myself.

TIA,

D.

Well after yesterday my air con is also goosed. I checked the rpm speed and it read 00 not happy at all. My plan is to leave it say nothing buy warranty and get them to cover it. The annoying thing is the warranty just ran out last month. So i will be shopping around for a good company with a good warranty so feel free to recommend one. Other than that I'll be using the wife's clio for the hot days lol.

Just had mine regassed yesterday, now for a 16 month old car that wasn't what I expected and what was even worse was when the chap purged the existing refrigerant there was only 40g, full the system holds 515g + or - 15g, so a leak was suspected anyway, regas the whole thing and leave ticking over for 10 minutes with the A/C running full chat and there wasn't one sign of a leak, take the car a drive in the local area and check again no leak.

Makes me wonder how I have lost up to 500g when the only times it's been out of my hands is back to the dealers for a recall, back to the dealers for a service and back to the dealers for a couple of warranty issues :wonder:

Well after further digging on my car it appears the compressors shaft is spinning but the 19-4 on the clinatronic self diagnostics things reads "00" on further reading it was suggested that both fans on the radiator should turn when the air is on "auto" not one of my fans was turning and that was after a 3 hour round trip today. It's fair to say I am quite puzzled to what it could be. A sensors as said above? The internal parts of compressor or a re gas? I have no idea it's just really hot in the car all the time with windows open. It needs sorted but with a wedding and a holiday to pay for In September I'm broke lol. Any suggestions folks?

Question. Should the compressor clunk when switched on? Like should I be able to hear the clutch engage?

When I picked up my first Octy vRS (a 56 plate model) on the drive home we noticed that the AC was simply blowing around the rather warm air and not cooling.

Went back to the dealers who regassed and when that made no difference investigated further and had to fit a new compressor - would have been around £1k if not under warranty.

Certainly seem to hear of a few people with failed compressors.

Hello folks, lots of interesting reading here.

My air con has just gone belly up, and I've been following the steps discussed here. Plumb out of options, so any advice or light that can be shed is appreciated!

2006 (56) diesel Octy VRS, blowing warm air so I took it to the garage for a recharge. The mechanic said the system was totally empty, and when he hooked it up to diagnostics there were no fault codes. He advised me to take it to the dealer, which I'm loathe to do.

Did a bit of scouring and found multiple part numbers for a new compressor (if that's the problem) so will need to get underneath to look.

I've just tried the self diagnostic thing: when i first turn the ignition on with the recirculation and econ buttons pressed I get the the first attached picture. The system cycles through the fan speeds etc as expected and then i get "i 0". Is this a fault code?

I'm utterly scuppered with what to do next, can't even find an independent specialist in Glasgow for a second opinion :/

Did your chap pressure test it?

I'd be keen to get it refilled, make sure there's die in it which shows under UV light and then thoroughly check for leaks whilst leaving the A/C blasting away for 10 mins or so. I just thought that at £40 it's not a major expense if there is a leak and at least I'd know for sure where the problem was. I think anything is preferable to going to the dealer plus, if all it needs is regassing I'm sure a dealer will charge a heck lot more than £40.

Here's a place I found with a quick google:

http://www.moorfieldmotorservices.co.uk/car_air_conditioning_service.htm

Stolen from another forum but both these posts are quite old so apologies if these places have gone by the wayside:

there is a place in Kilmarnock called Hyvac auto aircon services .They charge £25 to test for leaks and around £ 50 for a full regas

and another:

There's a place behind the pram centre across from the Bellfield tavern roundabout
