Uprated SMIC? Another IC option!

Recommended Posts

Just saw this after looking at the TX autosport setup: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEAT-LEON-IBIZA-SKODA-OCTAVIA-FABIA-1-8T-TDI-SMIC-SIDE-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-/380450479183?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AFabia&hash=item58949d9c4f#ht_2159wt_1163

Better than the standard SMIC? It mentions the Fabia in the compatibility list. Would this offer similar performance boost as the thin but long TX autosport one??

What about the mounting brackets, are they similar to the Standard ones? Simple replace, and then cut the metal ends off of the standard hosing and clamp on?

More pics are here:

Pokey arch mod would increase flow! I really want one but just don't want to be the test mule. Anythings got to be better than the standard one. There was a lad who did some readings and his temps were quite a difference!

Once i've made sure my turbo is ok, and its just a boost leak (fingers crossed!) i'm happy to stump up to give one of these a go. The standard one is really small, just look at the picture!

Surely it`s still going to be fairly restrictive to how much air flow you can get?

It'll still be restrictive, although I think the larger size should mean it can naturally dissipate heat a little better even with low airflow. Seems like a reasonable option to me for people who still want a standard looking car, although I bet even a cheap eBay FMIC would do a much better job of cooling if you can be bothered to fit one...

Sure a FMIC would have better flow over it, but there is the hassle of all the pipework to set about getting right.

Reading over on the golf forums, tuning companies are happy to/ and do run cars with 200+bhp on these. I think the Big FMIC's are only necessary when going for the big numbers.

I want to know, Why Skoda mounted the intercooler in where it is now, all the room at the front of the lower grille.

I think this cooler will be spot on if its a straight swap, then do the arch mod thing me jig.

For a fm cooler, its just the long saggy pipe that puts me off, as well as all the miles of tubes and bends.

Probably several reasons, expense, lag due to pipework etc, and the fact that at stock power an FMIC isn't really necessary. My Forge FMIC I'm sure is very good at what it does, but the pipework path is pretty horrendous (standard inlet pipework goes almost the width of the car, in through the passenger side, through the cooler, out the drivers side, and then bends up to go to the inlet manifold). So with the bigger cooler and much longer pipework, it could be laggy on a standard turbo and not make much difference to performance.

The only way to get a relatively hassle free FMIC would be a twin pass but even that it's fiddly.

I'm just surprised that there isn't a decent middle of the road FMIC kit specifically for the Fabia!

I`d guess because its fairly well catered for tbh, forge, seat sport, pro alloy etc etc, all fairly hassle free from what i`v read/experienced. Unless by "middle of the road" you mean "cheap" in which case there is plenty on ebay.

Not doubt it will improve the cooling, drill a few holes in the front, pikey arch mod to help too. I`ll be genuinely interested to see how much of a difference this makes!

I did mean cheap yes mate. TX make up a kit for £250 posted while the forge items are all verging on £600 and upwards. There are a few cheap ones on ebay but none are specific kits for the Fabia unless I'm looking in the wrong places :)

I dont understand why a tuning company like jabba get something like this ^^ and get the pipe work and brackets made up, Im sure it will be a hot seller for like 200 quid
