TDI fuel filter changed..mistake made

After fitting the new filter I did not fill with diesel and so it would not start, after searching on here I found a thread about filling the new filter with fuel, I have done this but my car still will not start, I can see fuel traveling through the clear hose, it splutters but wont fire up, now the battery is flat so I've put it on charge and will try again tomorrow evening.

Does anyone have any tips?

Also I'm a little worried about the fuel pump running dry and going completely wrong, I have not been continually cranking it over just for a couple of seconds each time...

Any help is greatly appreciated

the pump is not running dry.

First of all you don't need to cranck it,just put the ignition several times (7-8) and then cranck it.

Very important....if the car starts keep it reved at 1500 rpm for 30 sec...if not the engine will stop,and will start again very hard.

The TDI does not prime the fuel system by simply turning the ignition on. My old 306 HDI used to though. On the Octy, you need to fill the filter with fuel and then crank it till it starts. Don't crank for too long at a time otherwise the starter motor might not be too happy with you.

When I last changed mine, I made sure it was full of fuel and it was ok, the previous time I changed it, I was less careful and it was a right b!tch!

I'm not sure if is a matter of engine type.Last time(few months ago) I filled a 2.0TDI 140hp Sharan filter by turning the ignition.

Has started instantly

Ok well i'am just gona throw this one out , but when i done the tank on my escort and changed the fuel injector i just sprayed a flamable based aerosol in the air filter and it's starts but dont do it too much but wuith the natural compression i would think it would pull the fuel through alot quicker than cranking it over, so hope this works for you as it's just a sujjestion

Like the idea - using Bradex Easy Start or the like, but it's so much quicker to loosen one of the injector union nuts. It pulls the diesel through at least 50x faster.

Just to add my recent (today) experiences.

Mine's a PD 140 '07 and I changed the filter fairly easily (I'm no mechanic). Did have a problem getting the 'lid' back on as it wouldn't sit down far enough (as I tightened it initially, the metal lid started to bend by the screws as the main body wasn't sitting down easily). Nothing a strategically placed block of wood and a tap or two small hammer couldn't solve.

I didn't do anything to the filter prior to putting it into the canister.

Once screwed down, I left the filter soaking while I had a lok with VCDS to see if I could find anything about priming the fuel system - nothing that I could find - so I tried starting the engine!

Bingo! Fired up first time with no hesitation at all. In fact, I'd say that it starts a little easier than before (not that it had problems before).

Glad I did change it - the one that came out was black as a black thing at night! I know the recommended service interval for the fule filter is more than a year (is it 2 years? I'm not sure) but I think I'll be changing mine yearly from now on. Especially if it helps my cars 'hiccups' or falling fuel economy...

You need to loosen the injector 3 (the one with the wire for the needle lift sensor) union nut and wrap a rag around it whilst you crank. As soon as the engine starts, switch off and tighten the union nut.

It took 15 seconds to fire up but I did fill up the new filter with diesel from the old one ( filtered) . Just loosen nut one third of a turn or you will get too much spray.
