fitting grill fogs

Featured Replies

Second post time ive just had my fog grill turn up in the post but how do I wire it in it originaly had one andit was taken off the switch has a front fog setting but where are the wires conected any help would be greatly aprecated cheers Ozzie

I am guessing you're talking about the front grille with the 2 square lights mounted in the middle?? I would put it straight in the bin.......but then I do hate them!

I dont actually think they are fog lights though......fog lights sit below bumper level. You should wire them into the full beam circuit on the headlights because they are designed to boost full beam I think.

The one I had for my old Rapid were not fog lights but driving lights and were bloody useless, but I seem to remember you could replace them with a Cibie unit, but it was very expensive and probably not available now.

Legally, due to their height they will have to be wired into the main beam circuit, so that they go OFF when you dip the lights. Done with a relay.

Power from main beam circuit to the coil side of the relay, then to earth.

Switch side of relay takes power from the battery to the lights.

Yeah the square grill ones I did mean spots dont why I put fogs probley because ive been fitting them to a coach all day fog lights on the brain thanks for the help guys

I've got a wiring diagram, let me find it...

Well what do you know, my collection of RWD Skoda photos and files going back years has been wiped from my HDD. Bugger.

So every FWD Octavia Mk1 with front fog lights is illegal then (and every Audi A4 from 1995 to about 2000)? I call MBF on that.

For the OP:-

What is the lens pattern? If it's very heavy vertical ribs then yes you've got fog lights.

Otherwise, it's got either light ribs or a clear glass, in which case you've got "auxilliary headlights" aka "driving lights", which should be wired to only come on with the main beam.

I haven't a clue how high up the fog lamps are on a Mk1 Octavia, but do know that on an Estelle or Rapid they may be too high for the age of the vehicle, which is a max of 1200mm for any vehicle produced after 1971.

Get a standard 4 pin relay and supply it with 12V from the battery with a suitably sized cable to terminal 87, attach a similar sized cable to terminal 30 which will supply the power to each lamp, earth terminal 85 and supply terminal 86 with a live switched from the main beams, finally earth each lamp and they should illuminate when the main beams are operated. For added protection you could fuse the supply to the relay or use a relay with a built in fuse.

A relay is a remotely controlled switch used to supply high current consumers by using a low current to switch it. Terminals 85 and 86 are the low current side which operate a solenoid to close a pair of heavy duty contacts that switch the high current side, through terminals 87 and 30.

The lamps will take approximately 5 amps of current each.

The accessory lamp grilles are usually driving lamps, I had some fitted to my Cortina.

The front fog lamps on a MK1 Octavia are in the headlamp unit.

Ok, I'll conceed to not having measured it, but the fog lights on a post-facelift Octy (Y prefix or later) are the "bull's eye" lenses in the headlamp units.
