Columbus and Text messages on disconnect

RS3100

Recommended Posts

For the past couple of months I have been battling with Vodafone sending text messages each time the phone disconnects from the car.

I get a text saying the following:

"To make sure you can accessthe internet on your mobile we are sending your phone settings by text. Depending on your choosen price plan some internet services may incur a charge. For meinformation go to vodafone.co.uk/paygcosts".

Then a second message arrives

"Select 'Save' from 'Oprions' to configure all settings.

Access points

PAYG MMS

PAYG WAP

Multimedia access points:

PAYG MMS

Web Settings:

PAYG WAP"

Vodafone say the only way the messages will stop is if I change the settings on the Columbus unit but when I enter the phone menu, the only options the car covers is adding or deleting a user and changing a user name. All other menus via Columbus access my phone directly. I have had the car two years, no columbus upgrades, had the phone the same time and now have this probelm. What's more confusing is that it happens on the Columbus unit in my wifes Octavia which is 18 months old. The phomes we have are a Nokia 5230 and a Nokia 2730.

I'd be surprised if it is the columbus unit becasue it happens on both cars when phones disconnect, both mobiles are on Vodafone network.

If it is a car setting, how do I cahnge it and why would it instruct Vodafone to send instructions to my phone on how to connect to their services?

Any help greatly appreciated as we have missed some important messages as they get lost in the Vodafone list, approximatly 26 per day!

Hi,I read your post with interest, not that I understand where the columbus comes into it,but I too am with Vodaphone and am bombarded with exactly the same messages as you-upto half a dozen times a day.I have approached Vodaphone via one of their shops and they promised me that the messages would stop and they would put an iternet block on my account. It was all bull****,the messages kept coming fast and furious,so I wrote to customer complaints and I had a phone call back promising faithfully that the messages would stop, again bull****,fast and furious the messages kept coming,so I phoned again and once more they said the messages would stop, again bull**** and all because I don't want to access the internet on my phone-so I have given up and have turned messages on to low volume bleep, and as soon as my contract expires I shall be off like a shot.I hope this is of some help.

I have had exactly the same problem!!! Samsung Galaxy S2 and RSAP connection to Columbus

It only seemed to start after I had been abroad and had connected to a foreign network provider.

Have been onto Voda 3 times each told a different solution, none have worked

Tried finding how to change MFD to handsfree, but nothing there.

Deleted phones from the car and reset the connection with no success.

Contacted Skoda who have never heard of this problem and can't understand what in their system would cause a phone to request additonal connection settings.

Contacted garage I purchased the car from and spoke to their specialist in Columbus and anotehr that specialises in the MFD function settings and they have never heard of this.

Is this purely a Vodafone issue or has anyone experienced this with another operator?

Seems your problems started in the same way as it started for my wife and I after returning from our holiday to Berlin in August 2011, so we have been trying to fix this for sometime!

Hi Ray,

That was the the first thing Vodafone suggested! It was also the first thing Skoda suggested.

We have found that if the SIM memory is full then no messages come through on disconnect from the car but that knocks out the whole messaging system.

At this stage I am willing to try almost anything!

I get exactly the same messages from Vodfone with my Galaxy S3 and my Bolero. It is really starting to drive me mad. I know I could possibly connect through HFP but then this would had made it pointless getting an S3 instead of keeping my iPhone. I also have noticed whilst connected through rSap I cannot access the internet, as I found out whilst pulled over and trying to look at google maps. You must be able to have it connected through rSap and not keep getting these messages. I agree with Ray though, this is not a columbus/bolero issue, but it must be with Vodafone. However not being a whiz with electronics I wouldnt know where to start to look for a solution.

IME, this message from Vodafone alters the mobile settings to enable roaming and/or Internet browsing. It's definitely NOT a Columbus problem. Have you tried removing the batteries from the phones for a while, then starting again?

`IME`?

Sounds like it might be down to a software update on your phones. Have the phones software been updated and then this all started? RS3100 this could well be true in your case as you say you have had the car for 2 years and never had the problem before. If so then may have to play about with the phone settings.

My phone used to connect in HFP but after updating the software it started to connect in SIM_ACCESS profile which puts it into Premuim mode which in my opinion is anything but. After may days playing with the phone settings I found out how to reset the phone the HFP and everything was back to normal.

As far as I am aware my 2010 regstered (2011 model) only has rSAP.

My phone firmware was last updated April 2011 and the firmware on my wifes phone is July 2010 and we purchased the phone in November 2010, so both predate when the problem started.

Keep the suggestions coming and we might get there in the end.

The Vodafone forum say that the phone might be thinking that on disconnect, the SIM has been removed and then reincerted to the phone and again blaming the way the car connects, but surely there must be a way of telling the phone that if the sim is removed, don't resend the information?

A response from the Skoda Technical team which according to the dealership I got my car from consulted the main Volkswagen Group (suggests to me it affects all cars e.g Bently, Porsche, Audi etc...) this is due to an upgrade in the Vodafone system apparently a while after August 2011, sio I could be wrong with my dates when the issue first occured, but Vodafone are declining to comment when this actually occured. Basically as some of us have found, when our phonmes disconnect it is registering as a network error which the phne alerts Vodafone to and they respond by sending the text message.

Vodafone say there is no way of correcting this and I should contact the manufacturer of the blue tooth system in my car.

Skoda have said that as far as they are aware this doesn't happen on other networks so I should change to an alternative mobile phone operator.

See the vodafone responce on their eForum

My new questions to anyone reading this that hasn't experinced this issue;

1) What network are you on?

2) How old is your mobile?

3) What mobile do you have?

I'd rather stick with my Nokia 5230 because it has SatNav and a radio built in which brings the RS3100 Capri in to the 21st Century and it is a damn good mobile!

Once I get back from my next foreign trip, I hope to get a free sim from the most trecomnded phone operator and give it a go. If it works, I'll be reporting back and taking advantage of their offers to transfer my number across to a new SIM.

It does seem at this stage that those of us affected should vote with our feet and stick a metaphorical two fingers up at Vodafone.

Off now to see how many other forums of cars made by the Volkwagen Group that I can register with and see if they are aware of the issue and what is being suggested!

Don't get a sim from "3" it wont connect as they have no 2g carrier anymore . Just go to any other mobile operator and order a free payg sim to check signal strength in your area .

As it appears that the only service provider that this problem arises with it must be obvious that the resolving of this lies with them,so VODAPHONE is the guilty party and I for one will be leaving them as soon as my contract expires.
