Superb MK1 Xenon bulb replace

HI Guys,

Not sure if this is in the right forum or has been covered before.....

My xenon main beam on the drivers side has finally given up on me. So had a look yesterday and managed to get the bulb out to see what type it was. Bit of a mission but all grand and put the ballast back on to the headlight fixing without the bulb. Checked the lights after I had everything closed up and the passenger side xenon is now not working...

Anyone any ideas why this is. Have I blown the passenger side too in my amateurish attemps at diy!

I can pick up two bulbs for the headlights but I would like to know what may be the problem passenger side before I go at it again and ruin the new bulbs.

There is also a green cable and connector inside the headlamp housing, This was not connected to the ballast and does not seem to need to connect. Any ideas what this is and does it need to be connected to the ballast.

Appreciate any help here.

When you remove the head light cover, there is the black module on the back of the bulb, as you twist this, to allow it to be removed from the bulb it automatically ejects a set of green wires which plug into this module.

When replacing the the module on the back of the bulb this connector with green wires needs to be reconnected to the module.

THIS CANNOT be done until you have put the module back on the bulb and twisted fully to the closed position, as a lobe in the socket prevents you pushing the connector in until the module is fully in the closed position.

I think this is what the green wire is your talking about.

Further note: do not touch these bulbs with bare hands and do not turn the power on with your fingers anywhere near the power packs or the bulbs - 20000 volts can easily stop your heart in an instant.

You can always try swapping things side to side to ascertain what is faulty.

By far the easiest way is to remove the bumper (5 mins) then remove lights (further 10 mins). Then it will all make sense.

I suggest, from personal experience, Osram Cool Blue Intense (CBI) D2S bulbs. They are awesome. Do not buy any junk D2S bulbs flea bay and the likes, it just won't be the same in terms of output or life.

While on the subject, I'd like to replace my bulbs. The light is not white it still has a yellow tinge even though its xenon. Are there any bulbs that will make it bright bluey white like all the new xenon you see.

See my post above. Osram CBI are 5000k slight hint of blue while incredibly bright- I love them. Most 5000-6000k bulbs are actually very dim. CBI are not cheap, expect to pay over 100 quid for the pair but well worth it. YouTube has some videos that should give you a good idea if this is your cuppa.

Guys, cheers for the help with the bulb replacement. Two new bulbs fitted, my old ones (one not working) were really dim in comparison. I have to admit after 165000 miles on the superb I probably should have changed them a while ago.

Anyone know how to clear the 'lights failure' message on the maxi dot?

yes D2S bulbs is what your car needs if factory bixenons are fitted to your elegance model MK1.

I suggest you swap bulbs left to right first to ascertain that it is a faulty bulb indeed.  There are other components in there that can fail, namely ignitor (fitted to bulb) and ignitor (under the headlight, bumper off to see).  So save your cash and check if bulb problem or something else.  I have spare bulb and spare ballast and spare ignitor too, all used but working in case you need one, drop me a PM.

Finally, if cash is no object I would definitely advise to replace to either those OSram night beakers or Osram CBI bulbs as those xenons dim out after a few years and you will definitely see more at night with a pair of fresh bulbs.
