Whining / droning above 30mph....

Recommended Posts

It'll be sawtooth rear wheels. VAGs are plagued with it but only with certain tyres, something to do with the tread block pattern. I've had the VRS 6yr and it's never done it until the current set. It has always worn the rear inner edges but evenly.

Took my rear wheels off at the weekend and they're like 50p pieces. Switched them to the front but they still make an unholy drone at 25 and 50.

Car going in for alignment next week to hopefully prevent a repeat occurrence but will probably have to buy two new tyres despite the current ones having 6-8mm tread left away from the saw tooth.

If you get down low and look at your back tyres you'll see a pattern in the dust (or lack of dust) on the inner edge. Some people say you can feel the wear pattern but it wasn't obvious to me until the wheel was off.

tHANKS, but I just fitted new rears a couple of weeks ago and the noise was still the same after fitting the new ones.

i just changed the nsr wheel bearing this evening to discover that the noise is still there. so its either the osr bearing or god knows what. Really dont want it seizing on me. going to put the one i took off tonight onto the other side just to try it and see if the noise stops. if so i will buy another new one.

You should be able to tell if it is a bearing, get the car up in the air and spin the wheels. Swapping parts at random could get expensive.....

My Octavia MK2 has a similar drone noise increasing as the speed goes up, Checked the bearings and nothing unusual showed up turning the wheels or even physically inspecting the bearings. Still changed it and the sound was gone. In my case inspection of the bearing showed up clean but the noise was there just as you picked up speed and went over 30-40kmph.

No i have the same thing on my front left wheel, and the cause is the additional wheel adaptors i have, they are 2" out with 114.3 PCD 17" rims. This time i know its the bearing and wont look anywhere else.

Thanks everyone, changed osr bearing and noise has gone.

Next problem - reversing lights are not working, and the parking sensors only come on when I press the button.... checked the bulbs and the fuses and all ok - could this be the reverse switch on the gearbox?

Noticed the same awful droning sound from the front pax side of my car quite recently, My tyres (uniroyal rain experts) are pretty new with loads of tread and my wheels are aligned correctly, had this done about 3 months back at a very well respected place on this forum. I therefore forked out £171 to get the bearing changed on that side and this made no difference at all, in all honesty the garage did stick a stephoscope or something against the Hub and could'nt hear anything but i went for the change anyway, thinking it would be about £90 all -in !!. All i can think of is that it must be the tyres however examing them on full lock i cant find any unusual wear on the inside wall on the back or the fronts so am stumped, the sound over 20 mph and before 50 is like i have a 50p shaped tyre and it's quite prevalent with a passenger in the front and when turning right, I'm also sure some days it's worse then others..Scrathing my head over this is beginning to create a bald patch !!!

I've got a 2010 vRS Diesel and have started getting this problem too. As soon as I'm travelling above 50mph I get a droning sound exactly as the original poster has described.

I bought the car seven months ago from a Skoda dealer so hopefully they'll be able to rectify the problem and having read the previous posts it's given me a few clues as to what I may be and what to look for.

I would start off by getting a full 4 wheel alignment done on a Hunter rig or similar having first checked the rear tyres for uneven tread wear around as well as across the tread.

Out of interest, how many miles had you done?
