Weird electrical problem

Featured Replies

My clumsy son managed to knock the rear door courtesy lamp out of its fitting and them slam the door on it.

Ordered a new one from Bickerton Skoda. When I opened the rear door to fit it the light on the damaged fitting was on.

Disconnected it and fitted the new one. It didn't work. So I refitted the old one. That didn't work either. So I got a voltmeter and checked the voltage going into the top of the connector. 12.5V

I was able to measure the same at the bottom of the connector too.

With the damaged fitting (that was working when I first opened the door) I tried to measure the voltage on the copper tracks. Only about 0.4V. I popped the lens off the new one and did the same. Still only 0.4V. So I disconnected the fitting and measured the supply again as 12V.

To cut a long story short, for some reason, the fitting seems to drag down the supply. Whenever it's connected the supply drops off. When I disconnect it the supply goes back to 12v.

Very cold and EXTREMELY frustrated, I've put in the new fitting, even though it doesn't work, and I've left it. :wall:

check the fuses i know it sounds strange but im sure when i blew mine up on my fabia it ended up being a fuse and it had a

very similar fault

Had similar problem when I was fitting LEDs in them.

Taking the corresponding fuse out and putting it back in cured the problem.

i had many passengers kick the rear door reflectors off (mine is a s spec) i just decided to keep them in the boot and save people kicking them off, the car is a taxi.

Do you remember which fuse it is please?

Trying to remember by looking in the manual, I think it was fuse 32 in dash fuse panel.

Weirdly, this morning the lamp works fine.

Can't explain it, but there you go.......

I think the one word explanation is CANBUS.

Did it take very long to change the lamp? There's a timer that will turn off the lamps if the door is left open for a while. Closing the door resets the timer. It may be that.

Not sure how CAN would affect it since the lamp isn't on the bus. Yes the door control module will be, but everything would stop working with a CAN fault.

Well it took me a while to change it, but even so there was 12v at the connector but it still didn't work.

Sure it's not a switched earth? I know the interior lights on a mk1 octy is a switched earth and not a switched live after an hour of messing about lol
