Do i remap ?

Featured Replies

Ok so I'm interested in getting a remap for my mk 1 octy vrs.

At present it feels under powered on ocasions and surges on other ocasions!

Will a remap help straighten this out or does this sound more of a mech issue?

Any advice on these flat spots and surges would be great ????

It sounds like you have some issues that will need to be fixed before you remap, otherwise they will be made worse when you're running more power.

Check all of your boost and vac hoses for splits or leaks as a first thing.

But once you get the issues fixed, definitely yes to a remap, you'll love the difference.

Cheers mate, im only just getting into this game so any help and pointers

Is gratefully received :)

could probably do with a throttle body clean. What sort of miles has it done? Service history?

As per most of the other guys have said, Give the engine a good health check.

- Check all vac lines

- Make sure its well services

- Forge 007P DV, It can be fitted with differnt springs for differnt maps

- Get someone to Vag Com it to see if there are any underlying faults which have not made themselfs apparent.

Places like AMD will give it a once over before mapping to advise before they map it.

could probably do with a throttle body clean. What sort of miles has it done? Service history?

The car gas done 130k and has missed a couple of stamps, but I'v kept it

Serviced since i bought it 2 years ago.

If it helps...

My Octy was bought as a healthy example with 80k on the clock.

I gave it a once over, everything seemed fine, but I did do a throttle body clean (it wasn't that dirty though).

It ran ok, but it did have a bit of a hesitation on the first tiny bit of throttle at low speed. I replaced the MAF, which made it better after that (not perfect though), but to my mind it still didn't rev into the redline with any real vigour - seemed to run out of puff at about 5k.

So, I trundled it down to JKS in Portsmouth, as they had an offer going for a REVO remap at £199.

At the same time, I also had a forge alloy recirc dump valve and a Pipercross replacement filter element fitted. Easy jobs that added about another £120 to the bill.

The result? Well, nothing short of what I might describe as 'miraculous!'

The car now pulls like a train all the way to the redline - in fact I often run into the rev limiter now if I'm not careful and don't keep an eye on the tacho.

The low-speed hesitation disappeared, and it is now tractable, fun and a complete joy to drive. There was a huge improvement in 'on boost' power - easily noticeable - probably a good 20 to 30 bhp increase, if my 'arse dyno' is anything to go by.

She always starts immediately on the button, and idles like a sewing machine even from cold (SAI pointlessness notwithstanding...)

The only time I suffer any retardation and slight hesitation in power is on very hot summer days - which is to be expected, and shows the limitations of the standard side-mounted intercooler. I have no doubt that fitting a bigger front-mounted item would make it a dream car to drive, whatever the weather.

So yeah - in my experience, a remap was worth it's weight in gold!

Oh, and just to add - if I trickle along a bit carefully, I now get mid- 40's fuel economy too.

Can't be bad!

Cheers all, this morning i took some advise from everybody! Checked all the vac hoses (all are good) removed the MAF and cleaned it with some proper spray then cleaned out the throtle body which was filthy!!!!! After all these checks she is running alot better! Still not 100% but a hell of alot better. Next week its in for a cam belt service and will upgrade the sparks too. As we speak i am looking at forge recirc DV's then i think we are ready for a plug in and final check before a remap! So thanks every body for the advise there maybe a very happy vrs owner in the next couple of weeks :)))))

Im looking at buying a forge 007p recirc like you suggested, my question is.... Is it a direct replacement located in the same place as the original ? Ir is it like a bailey located by the intercooler? I only ask because i wanna know if the fitting kit is the same as a golf or cupra and most other vag? Ie could i get away with buying one fir a golf?

They Forge 007,008 and Bailey DV30 are all direct replacements for the stock one, in the stock location. The relocation kit is a separate thing.

The DV was my first mod aaaages ago :)

So i have been looking at forge recirc valves on youtube and they make the atmospheric dump sound although a little quieter, i didnt think they made a sound ????

They dont if u have the standard airbox on. Only with a cone filter or cai on will make the sound.

Cheers rosco :)

My standard one is pretty audible. Nothing wrong with the stock valve too, some people prefer them,

  • 2 weeks later...

Um, well not quite in my experience...

I have a Revo remap and a Forge recirc dump valve.

I am running the stock airbox, but inside is a Pipercross foam replacement panel filter.

Maybe the filter is making the difference, but even with a recirc valve, the 'air dump' is noticeably loud inside the car unless the stereo is pumping. I love it personally, even drving slowly I can hear the turbo boosting and dumping at any level - which is always re-assuring to hear, as I know it's all working as it should.

And outside the car, when I have the windows down, if I give it the beans, it is also noticeable - enough that I have had the odd pedestrian look round when it goes 'whoosh...'

It's not Billy-boy silly like an open valve - but it is definitely noticeable! But in a nice way...

Replacing stock DV for a forge is not going to offer any performance gain or noise and not really needed even for a mapped car unless std one is playing up. Normally a remap can make DV louder as more boost even on std DV. However due to age of the mk 1 VRS the std DV would of been on car quite a while so kinka makes sense to replace it and be sure to rule out issue down the line. Also forge like other well known tuning companies offer different DV springs for DV depending on mapping level. I use Forge with yellow spring on my stage 2 map and works well. Like other folks have said replacing the std airbox with a CAI kit will increase DV noise significantly.

Cheers Bowders, nice bit of info there mate!

So as i said in the earlier part of my thread i was planning and have now had my ney cam belt and pump fitted in prep for a remap and mentioned my plans to my mate who did the job and he reckons my vrs pulls like a beaut, and being a mech he has driven a load of vag motors to compare it to. He also said dont put it on a rolling road for a remap because of the age of the car theres no telling what would go bang! So although i know the cam belt is now good i am worried something else could go wrong and end up killing the car! Do the guy who do the remap really scream the motor fir a stage 1 remap and is it pretty safe for the car? Dont mean to sound like a complete numpty but this is my first crack at the tuning game so know pretty much nothing about it. :(

I had my Octavia vrs remapped a few weeks ago at Rtech. Mine was on 128,000miles, and the clutch started slipping. A week later I had to change the clutch and flywheel. But now I can enjoy the extra power, so all is good ^_^
