automatic gear box problems. help please!

Featured Replies

ok so today i got into my car and when i pulled off it was like i was in 5th, it had no power whats so ever, but as i carried on driving it didnt seem to change gear just stayed in the same gear, on the dash where it shows what gear your in they where all lit up. there was a code on the car for a solinoid (if thats how you spell it) once the code was cleared it went back to driving normal and the code didint come back even after 4hrs of driving! any ideas???

its a 1.9tdi 06, i have just had a water in the car problem which now has been sorted but i didnt get anyone to check the wiring, so could the problem with my gear box come from this????

cheers

there is a gearbox ECU in the (UK) driver side footwell. If you had water on that side then it could be your issue.

is this ecu easy to gain access to or is it a seat out carpet up job? cheers

You have to go under the carpet; If you are a bit dextrous you can reach it with your hand by putting seat as far back as poss, removing the trim panel where the bonnet pull handle is (single screw under a cover, then it pulls outward fairly hard at the top and backwards at the bottom), then pulling up the trim along the bottom of the door (careful when you get to the seatbelt area as the clips turn from metal to plastic and run the other way, so you can break them easily). That is the minimum required to get your hand under the carpet and see if it is swimming in a pool... it is in a plastic tub. Not sure how much else you can do from there; I've never had cause to.

If you find water under there, then you are going to be into getting the seat out anyway to properly do the inspection and repairs necessary. Even if the water has gone, it is worth inspecting the state of the cables and connections as detailed in the stickies (they are for the CCM on the other side, but on autos much the same applies as we get a box on each side!).

Hope that helps

that was great thanks. got the plastic box out with the ecu in and it had water in so now ive got to dry it out and see if its use able or new ecu. do you know if the covienience ecu is in the same place but on the opposite side of the car? cheers

Yes it's same place on the passenger side. Make sure you sort the water leak.

From what I gather, water on driver side is either or a combination of:

Engine ECU seal

Bonnet release cable

Sunroof drain

Door panel seal (front or back or both)

On mine I had a tiny trickle coming from the bottom of the front driver's door.

On the passenger side it is either:

Pollen filter seal & plenum bungs

Sunroof drain

Door panel seal

My pollen filter seal needed replacing and the bungs removing which again was contributing a small trickle.

If you have water on both sides I think you usually have multiple problems as I can't see how the water could easily get from one side to the other.

If your ECU has been submerged then it might not be very healthy, and you will find that the moisture in the connectors will have corroded them and with the continued passage of current through the corroded terminals they will continue to corrode even though now dry, so just because it is working now doesn't mean they will continue to work.

Dear All,

I have Skoda Superb 2006 Automatic White Color. My car have transmission problem more than one year. My car transmission has been repaired twice but problem is same as remain. When I am running car and car reach speed 80 and when its come back from 80 to 60. Car give jerk/shudder but car will run soomthly.

Please help me why it is happening? What would be cause? What would be solution.

Regards,

Ram

I got told it was where under the battery filled up with water and found its way in, so ive know done the pollen filter seal and removed the bung underneath the battery tray so nothing else can block it, which since ive done no more water has entered the (and its rained heavily).

ive disconected the battery to stop them corroding so quick, but my main concern now is drying out the car!

with the water having been in the car is this going to cause major problems with my wires now?

cheers

Sad to say yes. It will corrode out lots, especially all the crimped node joints under the passenger side rear carpet.

I understand that when an auto gets wet (no first-hand experience) a frequent problem is a corroded earth node in the wiring loom under the RH front seat. You need to strip back the outer covering of the loom to find this node. All earth wires are brown in German cars.

rotodiesel.

does anyone know how the plenum chamber filling due to blocked drains causes water to enter the drivers side? I thought the route in for that failure mode was via the pollen filter.

The main dealer dunce who "sorted" mine just removed the bungs. Of course the pollen filter seal was shot too, and a bit of silt and leaf build up to the side of the pollen filter made a perfect dam, directing windscreen water to the pollen filter housing :wall:

It's also essential to push out the bung under the brake servo vac chamber. There's a pipe running through it, so it can't be removed completely. Failure to remove this results in a rusted servo and loss of vacuum.

LHD and RHD cars have the same aperature in the bodyshell and its purpose is swapped depending on where the steering wheel is. One side is an air entry for the heater system via the pollen filter, the other side is where all the wiring enters the car in the ECU box.

  • 5 months later...

i own a superb 1.8 ltr  diesel with automatic gearbox..the problem is that in my car everything is normal when i turn on the ignition and after driving few kilometers (around 5-6 km) the ESP warning light turns on...but everything is fine and the car goes smooth without any problem. When i shift the gear at that time my car suddenly jerks as if something is pulling it back...and then runs smoothly...This happens only when the ESP comes on...and when i restart the engine Esp goes off and once again it comes on after driving a few distance...when i turn on the ignition and shift the gear to drvng mode it does not jerk or shudder that much...but after the ESP light comes on it jerks too much when i shift the gear..and this ESP light does'nt go off after that. It goes off only when i restart the engine...pls help me in this...does this indicate a major problem ? where can the problem be here ?....pls rply me as soon as possible....M fed up with this issue.....
