Reversing Camera on Amundsen Plus

007lookalike

Recommended Posts

I have read somewhere that the Amundsen+ Satnav unit is capable of supporting a reversing camera set-up.

What camera does it accept and what is needed to be set/adjusted to make it work please?

2013 Yeti SE Plus 2.0 TDI CR 140PS 4X4 DPF Corrida Red

It needs an RGB harness and camera, the issue is as far as I have been able to find there are no appropriate direct fits for the boot handle or number plate lights for the camera. I've ordered one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171036204250?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

For £60 delivered I thought that it was worth a punt, the description has a fair amount on the connections and the coding of the head unit (you will need a VCDS cable or visit to one of us that has one). I also found the instructions for wiring the tow bar which are helpful for panel removing here:

http://www.bertelshofer.com/dokumente/einbauanleitung/7BS003-22.pdf

I'm intending to:

- remove the head trim at the front and drop the head out

- remove the glove box

- use the guide above to remove the door sill trim channels, the rear left boot side lining, the boot lining, the rear pillar trim.

- plug the cable into head unit and connect the +ve and -ve camera harness into the head via an inline fuse (I really don't want to pull out the whole fuse box) the current is tiny, a few mA so this will be fine and allow for a smaller 20mm fuse rather than a blade type.

- run the two cables behind the glove box, along the door channels, and into the left side of the boot where the last wire will be connected to the reverse light.

- then run the two cables up the rear pillar and throughout the rubber tube (dreading that bit) into the tailgate

- during all of the above I'll wrap the wires to the existing harness with cloth tape to stop rubbing and squeaks

- then I'm going to pop out a rear number plate light, take out the bulb and make a cut away so he camera sits at an angle, then I'm going to replace the bulb with a smaller high power LED and just tack in the camera with a lump of blue tack for now

- finally I'll code the head, test it and set the camera angle before using Tigerseal to lock it in place and waterproof the modified number plate light, then pop back all the panels

Hope this helps, as I said I have not done an of this yet (although I have on another cars) and I'm toying with fitting the MDI interface while I'm at it. I'll post again in a couple of weeks and let you know how it goes.

Many Thanks for your help DrPinball. Most extensive advice but, I think beyond my abilities! May have to engage the services of a wizard. lol

I also found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330683500060?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 intended for a Skoda Fabia.

Would you know if this is suitable for the Yeti too? I will be interested to read of your progress with your project. Thanks again.

Sadly not, its not an RGB camera although you could use it with an adapter from a specialist company although these are quite expensive and do not support the complete functionality. However many of them do give additional benefits such as the ability to connect a DVD player. I measured most of the available cameras on ebay and none fitted the existing hole either, so you are then into chopping the tailgate about....not my idea of fun!

Cheers, not the first time I've heard that either - if you see a camera kit for sale in a couplke of weeks and a grumpy post you'll know we are in the same club.....whatever happens it can't be worse than grinding off those stainless exhausts :-)

where abouts are you?

if your not too far from Great Yarmouth, you can pop by and we can try the the camera I have

Kind of you Eddie-NL but I could hardly be further away! I'm in the frozen NE of England. Thanks anyway.

Fitted it all in yesterday - sadly it did not work despite checking the whole thing for hours and writing to the supplier.

Same issue as Eddie-NL, after coding the head as advised:-

37 navigation module

I got the usual screen with the car park and assist just fine and an additional button at the bottom showing a camera beaming out the back of the car - trouble was when I touched in nothing happened - curses 6 hours installation down the drain.

Last night after fortifying myself with three pints of Lighthouse in order to kill off the weaker and slower brain cells, thus leaving the last working ones to go faster (It's a theory) I browsed around VCDS and came up with this little beauty:-

10 park steer assist module

And it Works!!!!!

Here's the final fitting in the boot:-

Camera Mount

And the screen which I have to say works a treat:-

Screen

I also put an LED in the boot light, which was considerably easier....

Excellent! I'll order one right away. Anyone in the NE of England with a VCDS cable that can help me with that part? Many Thanks again DrPinball.

Thanks for that DrPinball. I also found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171046202136?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Would you know if that boot handle is the same as in the Yeti? It's intended for a VW PASSAT TIGUAN JETTA or GOLF. Much neater if suitable and not much more in price?

I believe that is the one I looked at - unfortunatly I seem to remember it was too large for the current boot release hole (if you search the ebay store of the seller where I bought mine he has most of these and very helpfully has images for them all showing the size). To check you only need to pop the boot handle out of your Yeti - it's a simple spring fit and releases from the right hand (drivers) side, just make sure you use a trim tool or other plastic implement to lever it loose to avoid paint damage. i *think* the hole was 77mm x 37mm - best to check thought. I guess you could make the hole larger but I think I would baulk at that. The mounting of mine has no holes at all, I shaved the back of the bracket by 3mm put a little soft tape around the edges and simply trapped it under the flange of the rear handle at the back as shown in the image above - the handle had a notch cut in its plastic for the wire but not the rubber cover which simply stretches over the small indentation the wire made.

On a sperate note I also measured the displayed grid on the screen and it's pretty much spot on, the yellow lines do match up with the width of the Yeti and if you drive the horizontal lie to an obstical you end up where the sensors usually go into the 'red' area - about 30cm away.

Excellent as ever. Thank you. I'll follow your guidance above. I also found a guy in my area who has the vcds cable and software to code the headunit for a very reasonable fee.

What about such set?:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-6-Golf-VI-Rearview-Camera-License-Plate-Lamp-Holder-Backup-Camera-RGB-/181145321227?pt=US_Rear_View_Monitors_Cams_Kits&hash=item2a2d1a3f0b

In my Fabia I have license plate lamp without screws. If size is the same as in Golf VI then it would look much better than camera mounted somewhere by screws...

My previous post highlighted by 007lookalike covers this - the product you linked has dimensions that you can compare to your own car, you can remove the newer Yeti number plate lights by simply springing them off with a trim tool or screwdriver blade protected by felt. Unfortunately I think you will find that the item does not fit, additionally it's fixings are different and would need a creative solution. Finally there is no need to drill any holes in the boot, the image posted above shows my mounting has no holes at all, I shaved the back of the bracket by 3mm put a little soft tape around the edges and simply trapped it under the flange of the rear handle at the back as shown in the image above - I cut a notch cut in the boot handle plastic for the camera cable but not the rubber cover which simply stretches over the small indentation the wire made. The whole assembly could be removed in under 5mins with access to the boot if it ever needs replacing.

I compared dimensions and they were very similar, but unfortunately only outside dimensions. Light from Golf is bigger and I had to cut out plastic a little bit. I will also need to use silicon as seal around light.

That's not too bad, better to trim the light than the car :-)

Brilliant stuff!

Im bit of a DIY novice but you've inspired me.

THinking about ordering the rvc kit from the ebay link you sent.

Just a couple of questions though

I understand from the explanation in the link that the blue wire is to be connected to the reverse lights.

But where exactly did you connect the red (12v+) and the black wire (gnd)?

Do you think this camera size could fit a 2011 octavia?

Would appreciate your help.

I connected the blue wire to the rear left reversing light cluster an easy job once you manage yo get the lights out. The red wire goes to the fuse box to a switched ignition fuse on the fused side, again very easy with a quick crimp connector once the box is taken out. There are two earth points under the carpet on the will by the accelerator, both have other things connected to them and the good news is they are held on a thread from the chassis by a nut. All you need to do is crimp a loop connector to the black and pop it under the nut and tighten.

The good news is you need to take most of the panels off to run the video wire to the head so this becomes all very simple then, the hard parts of the jobs are teasing off all the panels I took a lot of pictures so I remembered the order and fit. Running the wire into the boot on the Yeti this is a pain and needs a flexible pull wire and patience. Cloth taping everything to stop rattles and of course making sure you can reprogram the head and everything works before you put the panels back.

My advice is to check it all works in your car by popping the camera wire into the head and then running a temporary live and neutral yo the harness connections to make sure its all good before you start.

Good luck!

Just reviving this thread...

I notice that a reversing camera built into the Yeti boot catch is now an option. Does anyone know if the latch cut-out is the same size on the FL, and if the FL Yeti boot camera is likely to fit?

I'm asking now as I'm considering retrofitting the OEM DAB roof aerial, and if I'm going to drop the roof lining to run cables I'd rather only do it once

Pretty sure they are different - I looked for ever to try and find one that would fit Hetty, if you search eBay there are several adverts that lay out the full dimensions of the latches - I spent an evening with the measurements of mine and had no luck so fixed it as shown above - good luck running through the head lining, I took the sill cover route and followed the loom.

By the way it the one mod I'm glad I did, it makes reversing an absolute doddle. The one thing I wish that I had not bought was the park assist - Wifezilla has never managed to do anything but loose her rag with it, still I suppose in that way it has my back :-)
