CAVE & CTHE 1.4TSI, Just reply please if you have had an engine replaced.

Car was built in February 2013. Since beginning oil consumption was ~0.5l, but since few thousands km increased to 0.7-0.8l/1000km 

I reported too high oil consumption and in first shot they checked part number (if is new) of one component. After confirmation that part is new, car was taken to oil consumption test. After confirming too high consumption report was sent to Skoda. After 1week dealer called me to confirm engine replacement. The only thing I'm afraid is that dealer will need to take some old components from old engine (like turbo, compressor, etc). It is easy to screw up something during replacing engine..

The dozens of engines that have been done already have almost all been OK with what they need to change over.

Some have had new Cats & others not, and i know a few members required a new Turbo.

 

Most have been CAVE 1.4 TSI engines, 2010- 2012, which are Remanufactured Engines which are a Mixture of CAVE & some CTHE parts.

CAVE Engine management still.

There are some reports of the Revised from Late 2012 CTHE engines failing.

 

Since your Engine that is being replaced is a 'Like for Like CTHE 1.4 TSI'.  

Maybe ask 'SKODA' Customer Services in Poland,  

?

IS IT A BRAND NEW ENGINE FROM THE PRODUCTION LINE BEING SUPPLIED TO REPLACE MY 18 MONTH OLD ENGINE ?

If not, why not, it should not be a Factory Refurbished/remanufactured engine!

I was told that this is brand new engine and dealer ordered it, but it is not on stock in Poland, but in Germany. And it comes without turbo, compressor and other accessories so they will need to be taken from current engine.

That is normal for a replacement unit.

Should have newish plugs in.

Think I might ask for an oil change,as engine will have got through a test cycle. Prior to storage. Hence may have some dirt,swarf particles in sump and filters.

Bump again for the latest members with duff engines.

 

Of the 1,800 UK vRS with 1.4 TSI Twiin chargers from 2010-late 2012,  the percentage of engine failures is getting quite high now.

& the Failure of Replacement Engines is growing at a rather alarming rate.

There might be the difference of those that had a CAVE Engine as a replacement Early on after they stopped supplying Short Units,

and then CAVE cars that got CAVE engines that are CTHE part Enhanced with replacements more recently.

A few CTHE Engines from late 2012-2014 now as well.

I thought that was only the first build CTHE in 2012-2013, but it appears that that is not the case.

 

Only Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat & Audi will be able to give the actual Failure Rate of these Award Winning Engines

Built by Volkswagen.

New engine in a 2011 model. Replaced at 44k in Jan 2014.

 

At 51k back in to dealers with more suspected engine trouble.

Been back to the garage and they would not take the car back. Since I left the garage It has drank the 1L they have put in plus I have put in 650ml . The technician said I could not have the 1st set of consumption test results cause it not allowed , even to have a copy of them. He said it was using 0.964 when I first brought it in to them, they fitted the breather pipes and now it's using 0.230 (per 620M). He said from what mileage I have done since I left the garage (1450M) it sounds like it's using 0.84 per (620M) which is acceptable usage. He also said I CAN NOT COUNT the oil that they had put in.... So according to him I have only put in 600ml . Not inc the 1L they put in when I left the garage. Does this make sence? I have done 1450M and the car has used 1.6L . Been told to go head office with this issue now.

Get on the phone to Skoda UK And Speak to Tom Chadwick ,explain your situation - get the case no. and progress everything in writing as explained before. Copy dealers and Skoda UK Customer services via e-mail  .

 

That dealer can and should provide you with copies of the test undertaken. Get him to contact Tom Chadwick on the phone while you are there.

THAT SERVICE AGENT IS OUT OF ORDER!

 

YOU ARE ENTITLED TO SEE AND HAVE COPIES OF THE RESULTS.

 

GET THE DEALER TO CONTACT TOM CHADWICK WHILE YOU ARE THERE.

 

Get the Case No as advised to you before.

The Technician Report will have something like this.  In the link below.

 

Get your Information from Skoda UK,

and if you have an Oil User and a Dealership for some reason are carrying out the diagnosis & testing wrongly,

you will need to look at Having a Specialist Motor Engineer Examine the cars engine.

 

Trading Standards can assist with that, if Skoda do not want to assist.

This is another members taken from the 29 page oil thread i think.

Sorry if i have no permission to use it.

 

This one actually has the Technician using the Wrong Weight for 3.6 litres of engine oil,

Because 1 litre is 857 Grams,  not 1000 grams.  

Even still in the unopened 1 litre Bottle the weight is not 1000 grams.

 

*** 4 litres of 5w 30 VW 504 00 does not even weigh 3643 grams ***

4 Litres is not even 3565 Grams, the weight given for the drained oil.

 

3.6 Litres at 857 grams is 3085.2 grams.

3.9 litres if they made that error @ 857 Grams is 3342.6 grams.

This is how tests used to be done,

These covered less Miles / KM  but had the engine going through the Heat Cycles and gave more accurate results.

Still not as good IMO as a Car used in the real world for 2000 km,  (1242 mles)  and see how much oil was used.

How would I get a case number? I have been emailing head office in the last 3 weeks regarding this issue. Why did the technician say that I can not count the oil they put in as the overall usage?? And is it true that the acceptable usage is 0.84 L in 1000km (620M)

You phone Skoda UK Customer Services tomorrow and tell them your story.  

Take the name of the person you speak too,  and later whoever contacts you about your case.

 

Tonight you can go on the Skoda UK Website and Send a Message to Skoda UK Customer Services.

They will get back to you,  then you get a Case Number.

Be sure to get everything in writing as your case proceed.

Keep your Oil Receipts for claiming your expences.

 

The Oil that is in as you collect the car from the workshop should be 3.6 litres.

The oil used after that is what matters, and how often you need to top up to keep to that level.

 

Be very careful never to over fill.

& if they are monitoring the Oil use, it is better if they seal the Dipstick in and the Filler cap on,

you do the mileage and do not check or put in any oil.

No.

 in no way if the car is being driven in a normal way in the UK,  ie,  not under 5,000 km, still being Run in,  on High Mountain Passes or Towing etc.

 

VW, Skoda, Audi, Seat have in their Owners Manuals for all the Engines, 3 & 4 Cylinder, Petrol & Diesel, 60 ps - 185 ps Minimum.

 

"May use as much as 0.5 litres in 1000 km depending on style of use.".   ( So  1 litre in 1242 miles.)  

Even that is rubbish and no VWG Employee would accept that oil use in their cars i bet.

 

Read page 168 of the Skoda Fabia Owners Manual from 2010.

I would think so unless you are prepared to keep puting in Oil at that quantity & have possible problems in the future.

After all it is actually using Excessive Oil now if you are just driving the car in a normal manner.

 

Why not see what quantity of oil it requires over 1262 miles, (2,000 km)

 

Or put in the 'Correct Quanity of Oil',

 & drive and use the car untill you get a Warning Light or Message,

then see how many miles you have driven, & how much oil is required.

 

It is not something i would want to do to my car, 

but others have had to,  Just do not proceed with any Warning Lights on, Do as it tells you in the Owners Manual.

& as it is You will be needing a new engine anyway with te type of oil usage it has at present.

Doing the light alarm /known  top quantity immediately a couple of times will not  do undue harm in my view. But it does give you a consistent calc point. 

 

i.e. known quantity for miles travelled.

 

This figure for my partners was almost identical consumption to test results by the dealer.(failed twice) Result new engine

 

Not the best but most consistent way and give you confidence when fronting the dealer / service tech.

 

As you say, if the engine is crap, it's coming out anyway!

I agree. 

If driving normally,

i would just suggest do it sensibly and obviously not while battering down a Motorway or on a family holiday.

Head office called me, spoke to a lady the same rank as Tom Chadwick. Have been informed that their tech team is going to check my reg/chassis number and let her know what the correct oil usage should be. Going to phone me back on Monday.

Got to love them.  

You might think they have never had any contact with Owners of ailing 1.4 TSI Twinchargers with High Oil Use that are costing them 

several thousand pounds a time.

 

"Same Rank as Tom Chadwick",  that will be 'Having no Technical Knowledge' then. 

 

Hopefully she has the Communications Skills,  i wonder if she blushes while telling Porkies.

and i hope she also has the Ability to pass on to more Senior than her that, 

'Skoda Customer Services are failing the Customers that buy their products.'
