Retrofitting High Beam Assistent (MK2)

Too Tall

Recommended Posts

This is to document the saga to get the High Beam Assistent working in my MY2010 Superb II Combi.

This is NOT working on my car yet. It has been done, by Eddie-NL in his Octavia II FL and by Enriquez in his SII, so it can be done.

The HBA or FLA or FernlichtAsisstent is a system that switches automatically between the highbeams and the lowbeams. It's a "dumb' system, not to be confused with the DLA or Dynamic Light Assist, this system can put an oncoming car in the 'shade' so to speak. The HBA only switches between the dipped andmain beam when all conditions are met, and when oncoming traffic or traffic in front is detected.

In short, this guide was used

Components;

-Selfdimming mirror with frontfacing camera 5K0 857 511 B

-Covers for the new mirror 5K0 858 547 A, 5K0 858 548 A

-Cable to hook it all up. Kufatec make them, if you already have a light/rain sensor you need their item 38053

-Coding

Video of the mirror;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7zO-jl8GAw

Video of use;

Swapping the mirror is easy. Largely follow the guide above. Pry the 2 halves of the old cover apart, and slide the old mirror away from you and downward. Takes a good shove to move it off the rails. Plug the OEM 6-pin connector into the Kufatec adapter, all that goes into the headliner. The new mirror with the new 8-pin connector goes back on. The 2 new covers snap into place.

Then you have to connect to CAN HI en CAN LO. You run the wire down the A-pillar, to the fusebox. Then across the footwell to the CAN located above the accellerator. Or, alternatively, you run it behind the clima panel. There's the Xenon levelling module, easy access (the CAN is a right ****** to get to). Orange/Brown for LO, Orange/Black for HI.

Here's the xenon levelling connector. 1/RED is HI, 2/GREEN is LO

49s7.jpg

That was the easy part. Now comes the tricky bit. The coding.

1. In module 19 (CANbus) you enable module 20, "Highbeam Assist"

2. In module 20 (Highbeam Assist) you enter the following code;

0201856B74745D545420363E00

0201 are the only ones documented. 02 for xenon, 01 for left hand drive. I'm in Belgium so if you have right hand drive and halogens you need 0102!

3. In module 09 (Centr. Elec.) byte 11 bit 3 needs to be on (enable the high beam assist)

Then you copy the correct coding over to notepad, code everything to 0000000. Exit, do it. Ignition off/on. Now copy the correct coding over to the module, and it should work now.

Autoscan the car, clear all faults.

Headlightswitch on Auto, push the light stalk forward and the symbol should appear in the maxidot;

uxwm.jpg

Issues;

1. The autodimming feature works on the inside mirror, but not on the outside mirrors. This is because the Kufatec wiring is made for a Golf, they don't have autodimming outside mirrors. This can be solved by connecting Pin 4 with Pin 4 and Pin 5 with Pin 5, between the OEM 6-pin plug and the new 8-Pin plug. Haven't tried the solution yet.

2. And here I'm stuck. The assistent doesn't want to go to live. No faults in the scanning, but I can't get the symbol to show in the maxidot nor do the highbeams switch on automatically.

79n8.jpg

We're still working on a solution. Possibilities are old steering wheel control module, old stalk (needs to spring back to neutral after pushing forward, mine stays back)

Will update with news.

Scans;

-Got the mirror off the bay for about 120€ (you can find lots, but they are the "cabrio" version, small and very round, I specifically wanted the larger Golf/Touareg model)

-The 2 mirror covers were 11€ for the pair from the dealer. Bit of a wait though.

-Kufatec wiring was 46€ including P&P to Belgium.

Golf Cabrio ones won't work as it uses a different rain sensor

The only options for mirrors are

Golf 6 & Scirocco (which is what I have)

I made my own loom which worked out cheaper than kufatec.

I think the issue with Too Tall's car is the mix of parts

Older Steering controller set up and newer BCM

some older cars had HBA with older steering set up, but had the older CECM too

Just an update, this is still ongoing, I have solved the issue with the mirror dimming however.

My Superb had interior and side mirror dimming. The Kufatec wiring is for a Golf, they don't have exterior mirror dimming. So when you use the retrofit cable, you loose the side mirror dimming.

This is now solved. If you check the pin occupation, pin 4 and 5 are connected in the mirror. The Kufatec wiring however, has no wires in these. You need to bridge them. 2 Repair wires from the mirror to the original 6-pin adapter coming from the original wire loom. Pin 4 to pin 4, pin 5 to pin 5 All back together again, and hey presto, dimming outside mirrors!

And forgot to update, but this is now solved and working, albeit with another hardware change...

1. Your Superb has a returning highbeam stalk (when you push the highbeam stalk away from you towards the dash, it returns automatically)

You can retrofit the HBA using the guides already posted, so you need the mirror, the new sensor covers, and the Kufatec wiring loom. Then coding, and it should work if your BCM supports HBA activation.

2. Your Superb has a non-returning highbeam stalk (when you push the highbeam stalk away from you towards the dash, it stays)

This was my situation. This is the older type stalks. If you use the method described in n°1, it will not work. The assistant will be acivated, but the stalk will never activate. To activate, you need to push the stalk forward. Because of the design of the stalk it will not return, so the signal will never be send to activate the assistant.

There are 2 possible solutions.

a. You retrofit the returning stalk. Look at post #7 to see what that entails. Then run away!

b. You cheat.

I cheated. :giggle:

There's a module used to retrofit the HBA into VW Passat's without the returning stalk. I have one of those modules, and it works!

http://bronken.de/fla/

These are difficult to find, since the seller doesn't want to make new ones.

And now, I am finally done and can start to enjoy the car a little :whew::rock:

Aha, interesting...im thinking about doing that, because the bronken-module doesn't show the icon in the maxidot. It works independant from the bcm. So do you have a partnumber for the new stalk, and maybe a piccie of the cap?

Anywho, thanks to Eddie-NL I got that modification of the highbeam stalk done. Mod is pretty straightforward, as long as you're comfortable taking off airbags and steering wheels :giggle:  My stalk now returns to center when pushed away from the dash.

(Note the FLA module from Bronken.de was removed for this experiment)

After coding "momentary highbeam switch installed", and re-coding the HBA, it does not want to go live. So there. Doesn't look like this is a way to get it to work on older, non-compatible cars.

Im doing this in my SuperbII since reading this guide.

Right now im trying to locate wich part number the connectors have to the Mirror. I will also do my own loom, but please can you help me with the part number i need.

I have found this 2:

8E0971833 - 6pin Automatic Anti-dazzle

1C0973119B - 3pin Rain Sensor. - wich i assume is right.

But when i look at my rearview mirror it has a connector with 8pins and then the rain sensor with 3pin.

Sorry for doublepost.

I think i found the 8pin connector. Now is the next problem. How to connect them. I have spend the last hour trying to follow the electrical schedule.

This is what i've accomplished.

In my Superb 2011 i have a 6pin connector from the fabric -

T6ay

/1 - ro/ge - Fuse SC4 5A (ignition +15)

/2 - Brun - grounconnection in main line bundle 368

/3 - sw/bl - B520 Connection (RF) in the main line bundle- to J519 T52a/28

/4 - ws/li - B694 - to T28a/12+T28b/12 -

/5 - ge/bl - B695 -to T28a/11+T28b/11

/6 - br/ro - T6b/6 W1 rooflight

And on the adapter/mirror i can see the following:

T8ak

/1- sw/gn - Fuse SC4 5A (ignition +15)

/2 - brun - groundconnection in main line bundle

/3 - or/sw - Can-High J533 gateway T20/20

/4 - vi/sw - T28/2

/5 - vi/br -T28/3

/6 - br/rt - T6b/6 W1 rooflight

/7

/8 - or/br - Can-Low J533 gateway T20/6

________________________________________________________

Does this seems correct for the adapter?

/1-sw/gn  /1-ro/ge

/2-brun   /2-brun

/3-or/sw  /"loose cable down to gateway" or/sw T20c/16 gateway

/4-vi/sw  /4-ws/li

/5-vi/br  /5-ge/bl

/6-br/rt  /6-br/ro

/7

/8-or/br  /"loose cable down to gateway"-Or/br T20c/6 gateway

Everything seems OK BUT the T6ay/3 - sw/bl B520 Connection (RF) in the main line bundle to J519 T52a/28 (electrical power control unit) - This is the only cable i cant figure out where to put in the adapter cable or what to do with it.

Please help me, im tearing my hair apart!

Here we go.. 2014 FL with oem bixenon (with led), Rain and light sensor.. The right headlight switch.

Mirror ordered from ebay, harness from kufatec and covers from a local skoda dealer. Wish me good luck! ;) But... Is it just hi and low canbus that I need to connect from the kufatec wiring? Can someone also explain me the method to "jump wires" so I can get outside autodim to work also.. Maybe a picture?

Im so excited to do this! Can I use the hi and low canbus behind my columbus? I have connected some canm8 canbus modules there before.
