Planned to:

Fit R32 springs and dampers, clean thoroughly, and do the pre MOT panic checks

What Happened:

Springs didn't arrive, mate wanted do rebuild his brakes, so after visiting greggs, went to car shop for parts... ordered a few bushes and bearings, bought an oil filter, felt a bit inspired....

Ended up doing:

Spent most of the day with my tubby buddy on my back or getting dirty and tired out by two 14 year olds (2002 registered CARS!)

rear brake shoes on the dis-astra done, oil change on the sportswagen done, leather cleaned (thanks to my mates bird  ;) ) alloy wheel centrecaps upgraded to two tone type, engine bay cleaned up, 2x cars washed, new shocks cleaned up and got a bit of paint on (worse respray ever!) front bumper grills removed and cleaned after finding some swines cat has taken to p155ing in them  :peek: few mot checks done.... the horn works, I tested it several times randomly while my mate was sat next to it putting the silly sprung washers onto his brake shoes!  :D

Hey matey, don't apologise - in fact, post some more pics! :)

Sometimes it's nice on this forum to just share pics, and admire each other's cars, rather than constant discussion about what's broke now and how to fix it!

My thoughts about your car are - what a beauty she is! And looking so good for her age too. I absolutely love red ones, there aren't many about at all, so it's nice to see one in all her glory. She is looking sharp my friend, and a credit to you.

I thought mine was getting on a bit on a '51 plate with 170k up - but I defer to your much older car haha. I also have to concede that mine isn't in quite the condition of yours either. She's sound mechanically but bodywork wise, looking every one of her years now I think. No dents or rust, just flat - ish paint, and general weariness. I may go mad and send her to a paint specialist sometime this year for a freshen-up. Madness on a car worth, what, less than a grand? But I've had her six years now and she's part of the family, I couln't imagine life without her now...

WOF passed - it failed the first time because one of my xenon bulbs had failed. Which was working when I got home. Bought two new ones from Ebay and was carless for a week - but local price was $300 each compared to $120 for two on Ebay.

Today I had to re-code my central locking as it will no longer recognise the second press to open all doors. It would only open driver's door. So I've changed to open all doors on one press.

Fitted thermostat number 6, getting good at doing this, thankfully all the pipework and aircon delete makes it easier. Before you start shouting tried OEM stat twice, so that blows that theory out the water!!

This week I have replaced the air filter on my intake system with a fresh one. Fit the 2 rear caliper springs and wondered why I didn't do it years ago!

I also gave the car the 8 weekly glaze and wax all over

Next week I'm ordering new top mounts and hardware so I can finally fit my coilovers :)

Since new year my vrs has been treated to a new anti roll bar, new clutch, new yellow stuff brake pads all 4 corners, new tyres all 4 corners, new cat back miltek exhaust (race cat to follow), new badges front+rear and new centre caps, new timing belt and water pump, replaced standard wishbone bushes, that were shot, with vr6 ones, new track rods and the engine bay has been cleaned within an inch of its life.

Still plan to fit the race cat, front mount intercooler, updated tip a strut brace.

I think you've done a great job and it looks amazing. Absolutely love it in everyday.

Over the last few weeks I've changed my clutch and flywheel to a smf and darkside uprated clutch, purchase a new master cylinder on too. I've done the timing let too and sorted a leak out. Fitted new door lock modules and new door card, just got to fit new underlay and my black carpet. I also picked up a sector S3 black leather recaros cheap and in very good condition, don't know whether to sell them on or get them fitted?????

There quick to fit so I'd say bung 'em in and see what you think, if not convinced, then you can sell for a profit.

That's what I'm thinking, for what I paid for them there is too much money to make on them to justify keeping them if you know what I mean? They are very heavy, I'm going to make a little wiring harness for the electric adjusters and see what they are like. Knowing me I'll end up keeping them haha.

Not a VRS but thought i'd share anyway, all fun and games when you're feeling like death but persevered and got em on in the end, initial impressions are good but only time will tell.

  • 1 month later...

Had mine almost a month now, pesky EML lights on, rear caliper seizing up and the front arms squeak like mad when braking.

Nothing finer than sitting at home at night making grand plans for everything you can do to improve things, before looking at your bank balance, and realising that topping up your screen wash is all you'll manage today  :S
