I just bought one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171175298869

And haven't had a lot of luck with it. Was able to communicate with the ABS module but nowt else. Loads of "communication errors" Not sure whether its laptop, wiring problem or the cable. I've read it can be a bit hit and miss with some of the ebay cables, so I'm hoping I just got a duff cable. It seems some people have no trouble at all with the ebay cables.

Have now put in an order for one of these:

http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGUSB.html

To see if I have a bit more luck with it, as I read that Gendan are one of the UK Distributors for ross-tech stuff. http://www.ross-tech.com/distributors.html

Good luck.

Try increasing the port latency a bit - sometimes it helps to get around the connection problems on cheap cables

Advice? Buy the real thing!

Second that, bought mine from gendan. Buy the real thing!

I tried a eBay one a few yeard ago and couldn't do anything waist of money. You won't be disappointed buying the real thing.

I've got a Gendan Maxscan which has been extremely useful and does what it says in their blurb.

Oh, sometimes it's a bit reluctant to reset service indicators but otherwise brings up all'fault codes'.

Gendan is a company who sells the real thing. Put gendan VCDS in Google and it will bring them up. Cost me £280 from them.

VCDS lite is about £60 for the license or you can use the trial download which is free but not everything is enabled.

For the VCDS lite lead. Ross tech don't make/sell one so buy a third party one of eBay for less than £10

So

VCDS £260 can be used on newer VAG.

VCDS lite £70ish limited to the older cars

VCDS has no advantage over the Lite version for the fabia mk1.

VCDS lite allows you to do module coding now?

When registered for $99 it does. However it is linked to the computer it is installed on. To transfer it to another machine you need to get a code from Ross tech and I think there is a limit to the number of times you can do this. With full fat VCDS the license is in the cable and you just use it with whatever computer you want.

Also with a proper Ross tech cable I have had zero connection issues.

Nice one mate, turned down the latency in the advanced settings of the com port in device manager and performance improved.

Still can't talk to the 01-Engine though. Tried higher latency too, that didn't help. I'll see if the GenDan cable has any luck. If not something must be shafted...
