Exhaust Gas Temp. sensor

Recommended Posts

Hope someone can help me please.

Using VCDS I have found that I have a malfunction on my exhaust gas temp. sensor. Fault code is P242a. Bank 1 Sensor 3.

How can I identify the actual sensor? I've had a series of Glow plug light flashing problems recently, Now it has taken to limp mode a couple of times. Things always go back to normal when I cycle the ignition.

It's booked in to the nearest VAG independent on Thurs but they seemed unsure which sensor to replace.

Thanks for any advice, It's  10 plate Roomster CR Tdi 105hp

Could it be more than a sensor? Could it be an EGR cooler failure? In which case, go to your main dealer and wave your fully stamped service book, hopefully your extended warranty certificate and ask for assistance towards the enormous bill. It's about £800 to £900 because it is 5 hours labour. Been there and done this recently on a Seat Altea with the same engine.

Apparently the blockage happens and is unavoidable. My commiserations.

EGT Sensor 3 (G495) is the one immediately below the (flat) DPF can , and yes, they do fail on this engine. I had one replaced under warranty on my wife's Roomster after just 6 months. Here is my log for reference:

1 Fault Found:
14355 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor; B1 S3
          P242A 00 [175] - Malfunction
MIL ON - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

Many thanks for that, It confirms what I read in your previous post regarding photos of the DPF sensor. Did you manage to find out the correct orientation for the sensor please?

In the end, I gave it to the dealer for a warranty job, a good decision given later fuel in oil problems. They mounted the new sensor in pretty much the same way as the old one, but if I had to do it myself, I'd make sure the cables are well away from the exhaust, as I had stated in the earlier post.

I really do like the way this 1.6CR 105 engine drives, but when it comes to faults, so far it has been quite disappointing for me, especially after the 10 years of experiencing an extremely robust 1.9TDI in the Octavia, and 8 trouble free years of driving 2.5TDI in the Superb .

At least Skoda's warranty service is good enough (if you complain enough), currently I have 5 years extended warranty (2 more years thrown in for free after the engine block was replaced), so I will let the dealership worry about replacing any further engines :whew: for a while.

By the way, if you have the car up on a lift, you might want think about coating the entire exhaust (including the DPF right up to turbocharger) with high temp zinc or zinc/alu spray paint, must be good for at least 450deg C (e.g. ECP has Galva 97 at £8/can which is very good). After recent dealership repairs, I looked at my Roomster's underside and the exhaust was heavily corroded on the entire length under the car. At under 2 years, the Roomster's exhaust looked like Octavia's exhaust after 6 years. Took some cleaning and a can of zinc to sort it out, now it looks good as new, and will last a good few years without rusting through. Diesel exhausts usually rust from the outside, on the inside oil and soot protect them well. Also, coating DPF in zinc or Alu/zinc lowers temperature in engine bay quite noticeably.

Thanks again V6, probably a bit late to think about the exhaust - 53k miles. Maybe I'll do the replacement one when the inevitable happens.

There is an updated sensor that has a slightly longer wiring loom on it now to hopefully prevent reoccurances.

03L906088GR is the part number you want, ones ending in DE are the older, shorter ones. There's an extra inch of wire before the first retaining clip as the old ones were too tight into the sensor body and break inside due to the excessive pull.

Hello all,

I'm happy to see people solved similar issue i have. I have the same "p242a exhaust gas temperature sensor Bank1 Senzor3".

I replaced the part (the orange-plug senzor after dfp, 03L906088CH was my code), but i still have the issue :( it's very annoying, it recently occurs once i make the key contact.

Any idea what to do from here? Trace the two wires all the way to the PCM? Thanks!

Mihneasim. Double check that you changed the correct sensor seen people change the wrong one . In my experience it's usually the brown ended sensor that fails . The best way to fix it is with vcds or similar watching measured values . Check them you usually see a strange temperature reading .

Very useful info, as we have the emissions limp mode problem the main dealer said there was no fault to find, how easy is it to change this sensor, do you need to get under the car or is it as in the picture all in the engine bay.

What's the part no and how much?.

Thanks Pete

This is sensor 4 which i changed by mistake. One costs ~110Eur

Still waiting for sensor 3. It's usually the last two letters that are different - i would ask the parts dealer for help, i wouldn't want to do the same mistake again.

Sensor 3 is easy to change as you can see in the links i posted. I don't think it has something to do with emissions; its main purpose is to protect the DPF of overheating.

Hi,    Firstly,  thanks for all the usefull info you've posted here.

Do you know if there is some way to display an error code on the dashboard info display,  to give more details of the fault, without using a VCDS or diagnostic kit?
My mate says he's found ways to display the error codes, buy a combination of pedal/switch depressions in the right sequence, but on other models. Wondering if you can do same on VAG cars?

I have the exhaust gas warning light on - what the Owners Manual calls "Control system for exhaust".

It comes on constantly after starting the engine. No flashing Glow plug and no Limp mode operation,  so I'm assuming its indicating a problem with one of the temp sensors.

Its been into Halfords, for a split tyre, and independent VAG service garage for suspension coil in the last week.  I'm just wondering if one of the cables got displaced during this work? So, I'm about to dig under the bonnet, to see how much I can see of the cable routes.

Thanks,

Hi.

Where is this sensor located on a passat b6? Some say before and some say after the DPF. Can anyone clarify?

How do i go about getting the part number for this?

Wow look like I have the same problem on my

Skoda Fabia 1.6 TDI Elegance 2010 ( 26,000 miles )

I also have had a series of Glow plug light flashing over the last month.

took it for a trip to Bristol from Gloucester and it cleared for a short time,

Now taken it to London and it just keeps coming on after a shorter run.

Where is the best place to buy the Exhaust Gas Temp Sender New

OEM or other suppliers ? part number 03L906088GR.

Seems to be around just over the £100 mark

Seem to be a great car,

Shame about the latest VW Emissions Problem with this engine,

and drop in the current value. seems I will be keeping it a lot longer now lol .

Yes mate, modified sensor was always the fix I knew.

As for the emission cheat effecting value, once advertised properly I had no issues selling my Fabia Scout. Listed on eBay and sold within 24 hrs for more money than I wanted.

So is this particular sensor a logged Skoda issue?

I'm taking mine in for service on Tuesday, purely to keep up dealer service, and they've said the usual £70 to do a diagnostic check, blah blah blah

Oh yes. Certainly had technical information relating to sensor 3 when I was at the dealer. The wiring wasn't ideal and was pulled quite taught, this caused resistance issues within the sensor. There were specific instructions on how it should be installed.

That's one of the benefits (possibly the only benefit) keeping up dealer service even when the car is out of warranty
