End of report - out with the old............

Recommended Posts

116,962 miles. End of.

Well in about 2 hours the S2 will be leaving me on the back of transporter!

4 years and 3 months it's been with me, and has provided a sterling service with virtually no major issues to speak of.

In it's time, I've lost count of the number of tyres it's had including a set where I had a blow out and the gunk wouldn't work, compounded by the fact it was 2am and I had the family in the car.

I've visited a petrol station 229 times averaging 46.4 MPG with a best of 54.7 MPG.

So here it is one last time, sat on my drive waiting to be collected:

110,000 miles now!

So here we are again, now at the 110,000 miles mark.

Nothing to report, nothing failed, nothing broke so PPM costs remain relatively constant.  One very minor issue with one of the rear tyres losing pressure - was a dicky valve in the end.

It goes in for an accident repair on Wednesday but that was non-fault. Looks like it's having new rear bumper and N/S/R wing/quarter panel.

I'm hopefully getting my company car renewal notice this week and will be looking to order ASAP.

*----------------------------------------------*

UPDATE: The magic 100,000 miles!

Clocked up the 100k figure at the end of last week after 1,278 days of ownership.

Again, and as with other reports, nothing of any note has happened aside from replacement wiring loom in the drivers door. The mirrors stopped folding and then 2 days later it wouldn't lock. Common fault with VAG cars apparently but all sorted now.

It's had another full set of tyres so that should last now until it's replaced in November time.

Can't update the costs anymore as the company have changed the way it logs the financial information, needless to say I estimate the cost per mile (excluding fuel) remains around the 3.70 to 3.80 ppm mark.

It's been a pretty faultless machine to be fair and considering that I had never sat in one, let alone driven one, when I ordered I've been happy with it.

I reckon I'll still hit 120-130k before I hand it back so here's to the next batch of mileage!

UPDATE: Now up to 90,000 miles.

Doesn't seem 5 minutes since I last updated this thread, well end of September 2014 to be precise!

Again another outstanding poor month for issues - nothing to note at all.

The only items I've had done since 80,000 is an MOT and a call out on a tyre.

The costs areas are now as follows:

Repairs      £  630.36

Service      £   627.11

Tyres         £ 1,802.19

Misc          £    381.65

Total         £ 3,441.31

New life costs work out to around 3.82 ppm, which as you'll notice from the 80,000 mile figure is a drastic reduction of around 8%

I'm now into the final 12 months with the car, and it's booked in for it's 90k service next week. Not sure what the cam belt limit is on the CR engine, but the agent will discuss with the lease company.

Looking forward to selecting my next car but that won't be for another 6-9 months yet.

*** ------------------ ***

No issues to talk of and no real problems. It just keeps going which is perhaps why I really don't love it anymore - I've got colleagues around me looking and changing their cars. There are some really good vehicles about now and those coming through from the lease company are truly good deals

The paintwork on the Superb is now truly shocking - I take very good care of my car and despite the fact that it's a company car I treat it like my own. The front is pebble dashed to within an inch of it's life, there is a scrape/scuff on the rear bumper (looks like someone has done it with a trolley or something) and various small imperfections around the place - my last Audi and Octavia never really got to this extent despite both doing 120k +, but I think it's the white paint which when clean does enhance the imperfections.

Fuel consumption remains around the 46 mpg region.

Summary of life costs to date (4.17ppm overall)

Repairs  £   630.36

Service  £   572.11

Tyres     £ 1752.19

Misc      £    381.65

Total     £  3336.31

Repair costs include £529 repair to rear O/S door crease. Tyre costs include misc balancing, alignment and tracking, and also include the costs for my blowout.

PPM has dropped slightly to 4.17ppm.

***--------***

I clocked up the 70,000 mile mark whilst on the way to work this morning in my 61 plate SE Superb so thought I'd share some points from the past 2.5 years.

The car is a Candy White 2.0 CR 140 SE Spec Superb Estate with heated front seats and sunset glass as options. It is leased through our company lease providers (Tusker Direct) on a 4 year lease. The headline is that aside from a couple of niggles the car has performed very well.

Fuel consumption has been OK - average tracked through Fuelly is 46.3 mpg.

Good Points:

  • Size - both rear interior (for the kids) and boot space
  • Comfort levels - seats are half alcantara / half leather and I much prefer these to full leather
  • Build quality - as to be expected, very solid and no rattles to date

Bad Points

  • Poor emissions in comparison to similar aged VAG cars that I could have chosen - therefore impacting on my BIK
  • Ride - can wallow a bit from time to time (but then again it's no vRS)
  • Paint issue on bumpers - already had rear bumper resprayed under warranty; front is now going the same but unlikely to get warranty on that
  • Small crease in rear O/S door had to be repaired - this could have been done during delivery, missed at PDI etc but eitherway had to be repaired at our cost
  • Wheel balancing - not sure why but I have really suffered with these alloy wheels going out of balance - I suspect due to wheel weights coming off but I can't be sure

Summary of life costs to date (4.5ppm overall)

Repairs  £        630.36 Service  £        432.28 Tyres  £     1,701.69 Misc  £        381.65 Total  £     3,145.98

Repair costs include £529 repair to rear O/S door crease. Tyre costs include misc balancing, alignment and tracking.

Is it a good car? Yes. It drives very well, is very comfortable over long distances, everybody that either borrows it or travels in it, likes it.

Is it a great car? No, I don't think so.

Would I have another? Possibly. I'm getting to the point where I am actually getting bored of it now. Maybe I've just got used to it but it doesn't really impress me anymore. It's due for replacement in 2015 so perhaps an all new Superb will be out then; An Octavia Mk3 - no, don't like them.

Thanks for reading.

A useful review, I have a similar age 170 4x4 Elegance that's done 42k miles.  Apart from 2x leaky radiators it has been fault free.  By far the biggest cost of owning one of these cars is depreciation and you can't do anything about that.

Interesting, I have a 2011 (11) CR140 SE Twindoor so same age, engine and spec (excluding options) as you.

I'm up to 40,000 miles now but bought it used with 14K on last July.

It'll be interesting to see this thread updated as your mileage continues to increase!

Fortunately I don't suffer that issue of depreciation but do suffer the BIK element though!

Thanks silver1011, my last car (Audi A4) went up to 124k and as I have another 1.5 years left this mileage will soon stack up. I'm actually quite surprised how quickly the 70k mark appears to have come round.

I will keep the thread updated, probably at 10k intervals.

I recently returned a 4x4 170 elegance estate to our lease company 3 years old with 110k. The only problems I had was seat wear on drivers seat and EGR valve stuck@ 80k

The care return a 48 mpg over it life.

I have replaced with new 170 L&K estate, because of my good experience with the old car, this car is currently in the main dealer with a failed DSG box after only 4.6k, let hope this is only a glitch!

Not a bad review but just one point about the BIK.

You could have got a lower co2 VW or Audi but they would have cost thousands more for similar spec.

So you may not have been much better off anyway.

Yes. Depending upon job grade you get a co2 and lease cost upper limit (including options). An alternative vehicle may well have cost the same (P11d wise) but emissions would have been lower, so I would have saved by having a Passat 2.0 BMT.

However the emissions on my previous Audi were over 160g/km so even by choosing the Superb @ 145g/km I made a saving on monthly BIK. Emissions will come/have come down on newer Skoda models and across the VAG & BMW ranges (our choices) so when I choose next time I will make another saving.

Good report thanks for sharing that. I've had my tracking done several times and I've only done 12500k ! Had a similar problem with my last one too but not as bad as this car. What size wheels do you have. I'm putting it down to low profile on the 18s.

Its a bit different for my company car I get a value and a ppm figure.

But for a similar spec Passat the P11d figure was way above the superb.

Standard 17" alloys with 45 profile tyres. I think the GY Eagle tyres have quite hard sidewalls thus there isn't much give.

My Superb has just passed 74000kms and I am still an enthusiastic owner.  The Dunlop crappos that came with the car were dreadful and I flicked them at 12K mainly due to the ungodly noise from sawtoothing.  Replaced with Conti 3s which receive a tyre dealer provided alignment & balance every 10k and seem like they will last for ever. The alignment is usually out a little which is explained by our poor roads rather than a Skoda fault. Only other issues have been under warranty (I have an after market extended warranty also up to 100k)  An engine sensor caused the dealer and me lots of time until it  was diagnosed then replaced followed by a fuel filler release gadget that failed.  Everything else is fine. I have noticed some wear on the driver's seat squab where I seem to rub it getting out of the car and hopefully it will not wear all the way through the 'leather'.  Just replaced the battery after failure this week and according to other posts, I've done well as it has been working hard since November 2009. I think always garaging the car plus our temperate climate looks after a battery a lot longer than chilly UK.  Would I buy another? In a heart beat!!

Nice update Coops, I'm up to 62,000 miles now and as a private purchase I don't have the luxury of changing next year, this really is a run-it-til-it-dies motor so I do very much like to see these fault-free reports!

Nooo, you can't replace it now, we need you to keep racking up those miles  :D

I'm on 83,000 miles now and *touch wood* all is well!

Don't worry think I'll stick another 10k on before I get my new one.

113k miles - heated seat base has packed up, strangely on both driver and passenger seats.

The lower back is definitely heating up but not the base.

Going in on 8th December to be looked at.

Did they both give up at the same time? That's odd, I assume the bases are independent electrically?

Think the driver's side base has gone on mine, so I'd be interested in the fix - looking forward to the update!

I don't think so but I don't know either (if you understand!)

The drivers one had definitely gone and I checked the passenger side to confirm my suspicions and that had also stopped on the base. Highly unlikely that they both stopped at the same time?

I think it is a common fault that the seat base heating element stops working.

352 days of ownership have passed..

My S2 Elegance 170 4x4 saloon (manual) had 83k miles back then..

130k now! So we did 47k (most in Uk and a trip to Belgium & Germany)

*Changed the cambelt+water pump at 95k as recomended: £280 at a local garage.

*Done the service every 9400 miles as adviced on the maxidot (only mann filters and mobil1 oil)

*3rd pair of tyres (nokian weatherproofs) fitted a couple of weeks ago (1st: continental conti5s - with the car, 2nds: goodyear eff Grips)

*at 105k, changed the haldex oil: £64 at skoda garage + free full check (no problems)

Had the left xenon module issue but managed to fix it cheap, thanks to Briskoda and a very passionate briskodian :).

*After a year, no mechanical problems, went for the MOT and changed the front anti-roll bars: £43 (eurocarparts + £20 for fitting).

* Changed the rear leveling sensor (for xenons - broken): £52 (delivered from cars-equip).

Other than that, cannot say how much I love my S2, no smoke, happy engine, cause I only use shell's VpowerNitro+ diesel, a bit expensive but... the filters are always clean when replaced and I'm not a slow driver, quite dynamic actually and she responds very nice when needed!. I do between 420-480 miles with a full tank which is fine for me.

Hope it stays as it is for another 8-10 months when I'm planning towards the mighty S3.
