100,000 miles VRS - SERVICE NOW!

Hi All

 

Having had the car for a little over 6 weeks, my 06 VRS has just hit the 100k miles mark and I'm now  constantly reminded it needs a service.  

 

While I gather the funds together to have this done (it's been a hard month!) what can I expect to pay for a standard 100k service on the VRS?  Is there anything I need to be concerned about at this point in its life?

At 100k i would be carrying out a full service(oil,air,pollen,fuel filters & spark plugs),id also be changing the brake fluid & id change the gearbox oil as well,your car might be due a cambelt change,do you know the history of the car? what service did it have last time? any recent bills for parts replaced?

What needs doing depends on what it has had done previously.

 

I'd pay £139 for an oil and filter and pollen filter change...

Then the additional £80 for the fuel and air filters.

 

Don't get the major (£259) service. It's basically the £139 minor service with the extra fuel and air filters - that are only replaced "if required" which more often than not they aren't (at least according to the service book).

 

You'll need to find out when/if the cambelt was changed together with the brake fluid.

Hmmm.  It's a tough one - I'd still like it to be 'saleable' should I wish to get rid of it (although not likely in the near future!).  It's always had a Skoda service up until about 2 years ago when the previous owner decided to seek out cheaper altenratives.  I believe the cambelt was changed at 80k although not 100% til I check the receipts later.  

 

I've NEVER had a car serviced before so I'm not clued up on the going rates!  So assuming it just needs a minor service then it's not a huge wallet denter! 

 

Also when it comes to dealer vs independent, would there be any measure in having it serviced at Skoda for the 100k and then having it done with independents for any future services - or is there really no need in using the dealer for a car this old with this mileage (what are the benefits of a dealer service)?

There is a value in the Skoda dealer stamp in the service book, but as mentioned not on an 8 year old car.

 

A receipt showing the work completed and/or the parts purchased is more than enough come resale time.

 

Saying that the main dealer £139 oil and filter change isn't a bad price. A lot if indy's charge very close to this in my area, some even charge more.

 

Remember for £139 you also get a pollen filter, a wash and vac, a main dealer stamp, and they hook it up to their computer to check for outstanding service campaigns / recalls / updates etc.

 

When it comes to the less day-to-day stuff (turbo's, DPF's, flywheels etc.) then avoid main dealers like the plague as they will be much more expensive due to their higher labour rates, however if you take a look at both the 'maintenance' and 'service' tabs on the link I posted earlier for servicing and consumables (brake pads/discs etc.) then the main dealers should not be ignored.

 

My local main dealer will also price match local garages who use genuine parts which is also a bonus.

 

The most cost effective way of course is to service the car yourself but I appreciate this is not for everyone.

I had my 07 83k VRS assessed for trade in yesterday and they were perfectly happy that most of the service history was at an independent maybe more so because it was a locally well known VW specialist.

 

I got quite a good offer, I think it'll be going. some negotiation to be done today.

Great, thanks for the tips everyone.  I think I'll get it serviced at the dealer in this instance just for the stamp but ask them to hold off on any additional 'proper work' that needs doing as I know a very good local garage who'll carry out any mechanical work for an extremely low price (and a few tinnies) if required.

Ive just picked up my service bits,6 litres of engine oil(1 litre for top up) sump plug,oil filter, air & pollen & fuel filters,spark plugs,gearbox oil & brake fluid,all for £90 & i will be doing the service myself next week.

Do the pollen and air filters yourself? This is what I do and just keep the receipts for the filter. I always get a garage to change the il for the stamp and obviously check around the engine where you can't see and when it s up on the ramps.

If you've got access to some ramps/axle stands or can get the car in the air, then I'd say do the service yourself. It's not hard at all and I'm sure if you got stuck on anything there's bound to be the answer on this forum.

On my old mk4 Golf GTi and mk1 Audi TT I purchased all the service parts from TPS (genuine VAG) and was very surprised how reasonable the prices are.
