Couple of small jobs today.

Had a trial run at fitting the Thule roof bars on the car as it was the first time I'd had to fit them on a car without roof rails. Managed to get them fitted in less than ten minutes which I'm happy with for a first attempt.

I also found some Philips Silver Vision bulbs in the shed while I was getting the roof bars and feet out so I fitted them in the rear lights for that nice uniform red and silver look. Looks like the fronts will have to stay as they are with the fried egg look as it doesn't look as though Philips do that type of bulb in the Silver Vision range.

What a mare of a day!!!!!

Gave the car a good wash ready for putting it in "touring mode" for our holiday this Friday. Banged the roofbars on ok and then fetched the roofbox round and put that on top. Clamped it on at the front then came to fix it to the rear roofbar only to find the roofbars are too far apart for the roofbox to fit!!!!!

Totally my own fault as i had got the max distance the roofbox will fit onto a few weeks ago and had measured the distance between the fixing points on the car which were within the max fitting distance...... Only to now realise with the arc shape of the roof it means when the roofbars are fitted they actually point forwards slightly on the front and backwards slightly on the back therefore making the distance between the bars themselves more than the roofbox's maximum.    So had a quick desperate look around at local roofbox suppliers to see if i could make a last minute purchase of a slightly larger roofbox and the only boxes bigger than ours are too big as they are designed to fit on estate cars with much longer roofs and would overhang the windscreen and wouldn't be able to open the hatch on this car when fitted.

The reason we needed the roofbox was that we are going away down to Devon with my folks and my dad uses a wheelchair and scooter. He hires a scooter while we are away but usually takes his own wheelchair as when travelling down we set off on Friday afternoon and have a stayover at a hotel around Gloucester before then doing the last bit on the Saturday morning. So it now means he will need to hire a wheelchair as well as the scooter so that we can get all the luggage in the boot rather than in the roofbox and some in the boot and therefore we will need to travel down in one go on the Saturday morning now rather than having our usual Friday night stopover.

So not fully doing your homework can really cost you..... In this case it's costing us the price of the two hotel rooms we had booked on the Friday night which we can no longer have and don't get a refund for because of the deal we got.... And the extra cost of hiring the wheelchair on holiday too.....

After all that i also found that it looks like the boot seal has gone as after washing the car i opened the hatch and had floods of water coming out from inside the boot lid through the carpet trim..... So the car is booked in at the dealers on Monday the 1st June.....The day before the warranty runs out!!!!  :whew:

Oh and anybody wanting a 470 litre roofbox and bars keep a look out for some for sale posts in a month or two.

No I didn't Jake.

The issue is that the further back of the two rear mounting holes on each side of the roofbox is actually over the roof bar rather than being further back from it with the other one being about three or four inches in front of the rear roof bar. The max distance between the front and rear bars for this box is 80cm. The mounting points on the twindoor are approx 79cm apart but when the roof bars are fitted because of the arc of the roof on the twindoor it means the distance between the roof bars themselves is approx 82cm.

Very sorry to hear this...(roof box issue and rear seal issue) but it's a good lesson to us all - check and double checking fittings and things before jumping in.

Lord knows I've done exactly the same thing on accessory or upgrade purchases on other cars in the past ending up with wrong bits and total frustration/disappointment. Oh, and being out of pocket too...

Hope you get it all sorted :)

Just had the dealers on about the leak in the boot. They have carried out various water tests after i showed them where water was coming out of the interior trim when i dropped it off. It looks as though it is the nearside light unit seal that has gone (The small reverse/fog light unit on the boot door) and water is getting in there rather than the boot seal.

They have spoken to the warranty company (It's under the approved used warranty rather than the new car or extended warranty) and the warranty company say they don't cover seals as they are classed as wear and tear. The service guy apparently tried to argue the case of it not being a door seal etc.... but rather the seal around the light cluster but they weren't having it. Anyway the service manager wasn't impressed with the outcome either so has said they will waive the charges for the investigation work today and also the labour charge for fitting a new light unit if i would be ok to pay for the light unit itself which is £60. They don't carry them in stock so it's staying with them overnight and they'll fit the new one tomorrow once it arrives.

The car had a bit of a moment while we were away on holiday last week. On the first day there the Columbus crashed and reverted to German language with no way of changing it back to English. There was also no link between the Columbus and the maxidot along with no audio of any kind at all. The only thing that worked was the satnav but obviously without the audible instructions and maxidot directions. We had to go the full week like this including the long drive home too.

Once we got back I got my Columbus CDs and DVDs out and reinstalled the firmware after which the Columbus has worked ok. I suspect some files got corrupted during shutdown or booting so hopefully the reinstall has cured it. I've always kept my media on the HDD but after this I have decided to buy a 32gb SD card and have put all the media on that to try and put as little use on the unit's HDD as possible just in case.

The other lesson learned is to just leave all my Columbus install CDs and DVDs in the glove box just in case......... ;)

Some useful information with your updates here WD. Thanks for posting.

I too have just returned from a 2k kms holiday trip and by all accounts car was faultless UNTIL I had a fuel gauge error on the way back (subject of another post on the Superb2 forum).

Other than that....all plain (and occasionally rapid and enjoyable) sailing so far :)

A little flappy paddle addition to the car today.....

E0D5BB8F-27C4-461F-AC3D-C773379029DD_zps

I bought the wheel from Leon last month when he bought his new vRS wheel for the V6 and today headed up to Whitby for a day out with the Mrs and little 'un and a visit to Mike Holroyd for him to fit it in the car.

Mike really is a genuinely great guy and did a great job. Once I arrived he disconnected the battery and we went in for a cuppa while the car settled down for half an hour. Then he popped the air bag off with an ingenious home made removal tool and put it over to a safe place then swapped the wheel over refitted the air bag and reconnected the battery before coding the paddles and then we took it out for a quick test to make sure they worked. All in all it took less than an hour including the half hour we had a chat and a cuppa. I've already used them a couple of times on the way back home this evening and it's great to be able to override the DSG without having to put the car in manual and then back to auto afterwards.

One thing it has shown though is how much off centre my wheel is.... With the four spoke wheel it wasn't as noticeable but with the three spoke wheel having the bottom spoke being vertical it really shows how off centre it is. It's not too noticeable when town driving but on the motorway you really notice it so a trip to have the alignment done will have to be sorted over the next couple of weeks I think as the OCD in me goes wild driving with an off centre wheel.

I just want to point out this was an issue before the wheel was swapped and nothing to do with the fitting of the new wheel its just the three spoke design makes it more apparent.

Just got to get some pictures taken of my four spoke wheel and then get it put up in the for sale section now.

lol I know you were spot on in fitting the new wheel Mike.... I added the extra comment as when I read it originally I realised it might sound like it was worse after fitting the new wheel which it isn't and wanted to reiterate your work was top notch.

It's made me realise I need to move nearer to Whitby though in case I need your expertise in the future. :D

Thanks for the comments on the car..... And you have a couple of lovely looking motors yourself with a lot of nice gadgets fitted too.... It was a pleasure visiting and having a look at some of the things you've done to yours.... And let's not forget the fussy dogs too :)

Small update on the new steering wheel....

There is an issue with it rubbing against the steering column cowling. The upper right part of the wheel is rubbing against the upper right section of the cowling. This results in a brushing/rubbing noise as those two parts of the wheel move across each other when turning the steering wheel and more annoyingly a clicking/ticking noise when going over bumps etc in the road made by the rubbery material rubbing / juddering against the plastic of the cowling. I can stop both noises by pushing the cowling away slightly with my hand or by pulling back towards myself on the steering wheel. I've tried adjusting the cowling to no avail and after speaking with Mike we are going to meet up again and have another go at fitting the wheel.

I found a topic on another VAG forum that mentioned the same issue after fitting a new steering wheel and the advice on there was that the nut that holds the wheel in place may have been overtightened therefore pulling the wheel too close to the cowling. Doing some googling i've found a few mentions that the nut should be tightened to 50nm but i can't seem to find anything confirming this for sure. Hopefully this will be the case here as i have used the paddles a few times already to over rule the DSG on some of the hills around here so wouldn't want to have to give in and revert back to the four spoke wheel.

Hopefully all will be good next Tuesday when i see Mike again.

I had the cambelt on the Superb done last week (CR140) as the car is five years old in November. It was done at my local VW specialist who look after both our cars.

Since it was done though I've noticed a slight whine when accelerating. It's only really noticeable when in traffic and constantly accelerating / braking etc.... Once up to speed you don't notice it. It's also probably more noticeable to me because it never did it before, that I can remember, rather than it being really loud etc.... With the car parked and the bonnet up and some revs on the engine the whine is a little more noticeable.

I called in at the place yesterday and they had a quick look and listen and said everything was looking ok and the noise was there but not what they would class as enough to be an issue and that they have done a few CRs and they have all had a slight whine after replacing the cambelt. They said the first couple they actually re-did the cambelt again only to get the same slight whine again each time. They also use VW parts etc.... As any dealer would so it's not that they have used cheap parts either.

They've advised me to keep an eye on it for another week or two and if it gets any worse to come straight back in but if it doesn't get any worse then it'll be fine. Now these guys usually really know their VAG stuff and have given me plenty of really really good advice in the past but I'm always concerned about cambelt issues and the damage that can be done.

Ok looks like the cambelt thing is nothing to worry about. I asked a fellow member who works at VW in the service department to have a listen to the car last night and he said it sounded ok. We then had a listen to his own Octy vRS diesel which is on its third cambelt and that had a similar noise. :)

And touch wood the steering wheel is sorted now too. I met up with Mike again last week while he was down in York and we refitted the wheel and after a few attempts it now seems good. Turns out it looks like my steering column cowling protrudes slightly on the right hand side and the fake leather style rubber coating on the flappy paddle wheel is thicker on the rear than it is on my old wheel so they were just brushing against each other rather than there being a 1-2mm gap. Luckily i had some wet/dry in the boot of the car so we rubbed down the back of the cowling mounts so it pulled the cowling in a fraction of a mm and also rubbed down the back of the steering wheel to take off a fraction of a mm off there and now it seems to be good. If it does catch again in the future for some reason then a quick rub down of the back of the wheel with some coarser sandpaper should do the trick and without having to remove the wheel again.

Thanks again to Mike for his much appreciated assistance with this addition to the car. :)

Called in at the dealers and collected a new aerial base and aerial for the mrs' vRS the other day and thought i'd get a couple of these for the front doors of the Superb while i was there.....

When i originally saw them i thought they were a complete bin but turns out they are bottomless and the supplied plastic bag clips into the top edge and then fills down into the door bucket. They come with a couple of spare bags but unless you put something pointy/sharp or gloopy in them you could just keep using the same bag for quite a while i think.

I've been thinking of getting some of those bins myself! Is it easy to change the bags, and where does one get a new bag?

Yes the bags just clip in and unless they are damaged I don't see why you would need to do anything other than empty the whole thing out into a bin and keep using the same bag without removing it. They come with three or four bags included too but not sure where any replacements can be bought from.
