Following the visit to the Skoda in Walmer and after running diagnostics it seems 99% certain that it is the ballast that has packed up. The 1% doubt is that they didn't have time to try out the left headlight (working) ballast as it necessitates removing the bumper. The ballast is underneath the headlight apparently. I will buy the ebay ballast for £85 and get my local independent to fit it next week. As an aside I would recommend Adamsons the Skoda dealer in Walmer, and wish they were my local main dealers.

Trying the simple option in the morning and going to get a fuse, if that don't work i will put into the garage for testing.

Actually are instructions in the manual and as you describe very simple. However......

 

There are instructions for normal halogen dipped headlight replacement, but not for the bi-xenon's.

 

"Note: This Owner's Manual only describes the replacement of bulbs where it is assumed that no major complications will arise. Other light bulbs should be changed by your specialist garage.

 

Gas discharge bulbs (xenon bulbs) operate with a high voltage, professional knowledge is required - danger to life!"

 

Although I am still unsure as to what the differences (if any) there are between replacing halogen and xenon headlight bulbs on the Superb. Did you have to remove the ballast to gain access to the D1S bulb?

Whats the ballast  :blush:  :blush: ? All I had to do was open bonnet and take a plastic cap off the back of the headlight unit and twist and that was it done. No harder than changing a household light.

That's good to know then!

 

It also suggests that Skoda are being some what over cautious when suggesting that xenon bulbs should only be replaced by a main dealer!

 

On older models it wasn't uncommon to have to first remove the ignitor or ballasts before gaining access to the xenon bulb. It sounds like Skoda have made it far simpler on the MkII Superb.

The ballast is a type of control unit. The ebay listing below is the appropriate unit for my car, and I believe yours as well. The price from a main dealers is around £220 I think.

Replacing the ballast though does involve removing the front bumper, as it's below the headlight.. This has become rather a expensive exercise although the £135 I spent on the new bulbs does mean I should have lights that are much brighter.

Right been to the Skoda garage. Not the fuse. Booked in for diagnostics but they wanted £90 up front. Booked now into local garage beside house who will test and let me know. Going in Tuesday.

I was charged £60 inc vat for the diagnostics at the Skoda dealer where I am this weekend. Your local garages diagnostic device may not come up with anything, my local independent garage tried but it didn't reveal anything. They didn't charge me though.

Put it into local garage and ballast had gone. they had ordered one through dealer at over £200. I asked them to stop it and they are allowing me to buy my own and they will fit. Got one via the link above from HIDs for £85. I had bought the bulbs from them last week for £75 so they are happy for me to send them back. 

 

All well should be sorted later in week.

I had the ballast replaced today and now all working fine. The old ballast was full of water so not much wonder it had packed up! I've only had the car for about 6 weeks, so have no idea how or why the rubber cap on the back of the headlight had come adrift, but this being detached obviously let the water in. Altogether quite an expensive exercise. I now have Osram Night Breaker bulbs (£138 for two) which are supposed to be 70% brighter than the originals, which I didn't need, but have decided to keep. My total expenditure including the bulbs was £375, which is probably less than I would have paid for a main dealer to diagnose, and supply and fit a new ballast. I will probably put the old bulbs on eBay and see what I can get for them.

Right all done. Total bill

 

Local Garage £114 labour and diagnostics and ballast on line £85 = £199

 

Skoda Price. £96 diagnotics, £200 bulbs and £80 fitting = £376

 

This sites advice saved me £177 and that the reason I pay my membership.

Thanks for all the good info.

 

Just changed my Xenon D1s burners after the left dipped beam failed and it was a simple job!

 

IMPORTANT First off note the warning in the manual, High voltage possible and danger of death so

  • Engine off
  • keys out
  • ensure the lights are off
  • don't put the keys in your pocket where a press of a button will cause the lights to come on.
  • Ensure you remove the multi-plug that supplies power to the headlight before you remove the rubber cover, details below....
  • If you really want to make sure, disconnect the battery.

 

I bought a pair of D1s burners (which is what xenon bulbs are generally referred to as) as graded parts which just meant removed from new HID Kits, presumably where someone wanted a different light colour etc for £72 for the pair delivered from http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/2-x-osram-66144-66140-xenarc-d1s-35w-hid-xenon-bulbs-graded/

 

Look on the net for a 10% discount code.

 

The job took five-ten minutes to change them on my Skoda Superb II Elegance.

The flesh the process out if it helps anyone.....

 

Skoda Superb II Headlight - Bulb changing

 

  • IMPORTANT remove the multi-plug connector next to the rubber cap shown at B above, this will ensure the burner will not become live while you are touching it!
  • If you really want to make sure, disconnect the battery. 
  • Remove the middle large rubber cap (picture showing the layout of these is in the manual under bulb replacement also attached here for reference the cap is labelled B). This is the easiest one to get to!
  • Twist the base of the bulb anticlockwise about 45 degrees and pull the Burner out backwards.
  • Pull the metal wiring connector off the D1s.
  • Mine new burners came without the plastic mounting ring which I removed from the old burner by releasing the small plastic catch, the ring then opens into two halves which easily locate (in two notches on the new burners) and close back into a ring and the latch clicks back together. Don't worry its very obvious when you look at the mounting ring plastic.
  • connect the wiring connector to the new burner (push fit).
  • Carefully insert the new burner in to the headlight in the same 45 degree anticlockwise position the old on came out at and turn clockwise 45 degrees till its locked in place.
  • refit the large rubber cover.

Job done.

 

Honest its really simple but don't do it if you are not confident you know the power is off first.

HI there guys, 

 

 had left my mk2 superb elegance stood over 3 weeks and when i came back heater blower was stuck which was repaired twice but now works ok (humidity issue just clean and dry) but what worries me is the xenon problem i have. after couple of hours or sometimes even minutes lights out. comes on the middle console as chech the beam. its not the bulb swapped them works ok. quite a bit of water in the lamp. all dried now but light died completely. long bem and side works. just xenon. it doesnt come up as a fault anymore. here is a complete read out if you recognize anything feel free to let me know.

forgot to mention that brand new batter bosch s4 was dead in 3 weeks which caused a lot of these faults
