AC issue

Recommended Posts

Well, it looks like I have an issue..... Went to a carvery for lunch, came out all OK, driving along the AC blower turned off even though the scale on the fan button was about half lit up... after about 3 mins it came back on... then off again...

Left the car standing for a while and all  seemed OK, went for a drive all OK.... parked back up, it went off... Any ideas?

Went it works it is cold so the ac is working..

That's odd, it's happened one when it looked like the fan was on but nothing was blowing. I turned it off and on again and it's not done it since... just off for a carvery ourselves!

Just been out and tried it again, start engine it blows at high speed as it's warm inside, then the fan just stops... I can press any button but it stays off, turned ignition off waited a few seconds and it started to work, but went off again..I can press any button or the fan speed and nothing.... was OK until I got to lunch... :(

I have just called the "local" dealer, only 8 miles away, Griffin Mill in Pontypridd, explained what it was doing, that I was now sitting in the car fan "showing" as blowing high, but doing nothing at all, I explained that I was on holiday, and I had plugged VCDS in and found a fault... I asked if he thought they could help whilst I was on holiday... "I am sure we can"... very nice person I spoke to, so I will go over for 8am when they open :)

Just been out and it is doing nothing at all, maybe a loose connection?

Was only the sales department, but he seemed very helpful :)  Lets hope the service is as helpful when I get there in the morning... It is not working at all now, can't even clear the fault code, just comes back...

Any idea what that fault means? loose connection maybe? when it did kick in the ac worked as it should, fan speed changed with temp, the ac blew cold air, so it seems to be working, and the display shows it "thinks" it doing what it needs to do, just the blower not moving

I thought connection made/broken as I drove...

this is what the panel shows... but the fan is silent....

As yours is so new, you may find it's just a loose connector that wasn't pushed home fully at build. Should be easy for them to check this out as you have the fault code.

Just waiting for Superbia to come along and suggest disconnecting the battery ;) ;)

As I say paying local dealer here a visit first think, maybe loom loose on the blower... I HOPE!

It would make sense, connects then disconnects as you drive, bumps in road etc...I suppose the amount of connectors in the car it is easy for one to not be quite tight... I don't think it can be a major issue, as I say, I hope, as it did work perfect when it cut back in. AC and all... .Maybe just come out altogether now... I really hope it's an easy fix :(

I found one reference to this fault on vwforum.ro. This is the autotranslate version:

Quuestion:

I can not find anywhere an answer to the following error: 9478421 - Diagnostic line for front air blower B10A1 15 (009) - open or short to plus - Confirmed Tested Since Memory Clear's O2 facelift, 1.6 D 2011 and not working heater. Does the relay or fuse? if so where, if I can check before I start to unfold. any advice is welcome

Answer:

Loosen heater that is very light and check if it works on direct.

I read that earlier, not much on the internet about it... :(

In the 6-7 miles journey I did it switched off, then back on about 3 times, when I got back to the holiday cottage it stayed on for quite a while then went off, all the symptoms of a bad connection (I hope) when it did work you would not have thought that there was a problem, changed speed, I could manually alter the fan speed no problem, change the temp, switch ac on and off, all as it should, it then just stopped dead! as if disconnected...

I really hope it is just a connection that has worked loose, or maybe a relay sticking? not sure if there is one... I am jut clutching at straws and praying/hoping that it is straight forward fix.... My luck is not that good :(

I bet..... .

I was just searching for topics on "Open or Short to Plus" they all say it "could" be wiring related amongst other things... as I say I expect I will be too optimistic in saying mine will be easy fix  But I will keep it all crossed :(

I bet that blower motor is a right old pain to get to.

Nope

About 15 minute job to change (had mine replaced in February)

Only problem for old farts like me, is you have to lie on your back on the floor in the passenger footwell with your legs and feet hanging out to reach up to it.

Strange or coincidence..... I have just been out to the car, turned the ignition on and the fan/AC worked straight away... Could the sunlight sensor on the dashboard cause this issue? When I tried earlier no matter what I did the fan would not work, the sun was out and it was quite warm... it is now quite cool and darkish....

Don't suppose you can remember how to do it?

Yes, exactly.

Took it my local VAG specialist, said "It's under Warranty", 2 days later watched as he lay on his back and grovelled under the dashboard.  :D

(Sorry, I know that's not much help, but it was literally a 15 minute job)

That'll be good if it's that simple, maybe just behind the passenger footwell.  With the amount of work that blower motor has to do, then I can see that one or two of them will fail early on.  I replaced one on a different car, and I had to remove a lot of trim in order to remove the glovebox, and then the motor was sitting behind there.  Took me a good 1.5 hours end-to-end, and that was with good detailed notes and a lot of prep.

Well, I will say they are helpful at Griffin Mill in Pontypridd... .I did not expect them to drop everything and do it now, although it would be nice, but Paul, the service advisor listened to my problem, went to fetch the technician, who was also very confused, I told them I did connect VCDS and showed them the code that came up, but they had never come across this...

Whilst I was doing that Paul scoured the diary to try and get me in asap so they could check it out, they were honest from the start, they can look/diagnose, but if parts are needed it may not be possible before I leave for home Friday... SO it will be back to my excellent supplying dealer D.M Keith in York....

So, they have managed to fit me in for an hour or so at 12 tomorrow to see if they can help...

It is strange though, I went out last night just as it was getting dark twice in a 30min timespan, both times as soon as I started the engine the fan blasted cool air, AC worked everything...

This morning I travelled 8 miles to the dealer, turned off for 15 mins and drove almost all the way back to the cottage it then went off, and is still off now.... completely dead... Even the stop/start will not kick in because it need the interior to temp before it turns the AC off...

The technician did say it may be temp related... HOPE he can sort it before Friday :)

I did email the supplying dealer to let them know, they cannot apologies enough for this... not there fault :)

D.M Keith in York are, and always have been fantastic... this is the reply

Morning Stuart

Sorry to hear that you have experienced a problem.

Please let me know if you need any help or advice and we will try to assist.

If the dealer down where you are is unable to repair the fault let me know and I will get Chris to investigate and we can sort it for you.

Please copy in James, Doug and Carl as I may not be in all week due to difficulties at home.

Hope it all gets sorted for you.

Best regards

Steve

I know it is impossible for them to help being 260 miles away, but if I need them they will, and lend me a car to use....

Hopefully the quick check over tomorrow will resolve your issue and you can get on with your holiday without further disruptions.

cheers, Steve

Hope they do, it is not too much of a problem, we tend to stay local during the holiday as my Mom is disabled, but the journey home may be bad if it is as hot as they forecast ... Fingers crossed they identify the issue, may even be something stupid, and if parts are needed they can order and sort before I go back... Dealer only 8 miles away so no issue... Think they can get stuff overnight if needed :)

Fingers, toes and everything else crossed..... Prayer said....

Well, been to local dealer today, and as I suspected, not a 5 min job to fix :( They have done the checks and it appears that there is an issue in the wiring between the control unit and the fan, so it needs further looking and may need stripping down to find it ... They would have done it but as I go home Friday AM, and there is no real way to tell how long it will take to find, I have booked it in at the supplying dealer for Friday PM

Not really happy, £32000 worth of car and 2 weeks old, no fan so no real air into the cabin, and have a 260 mile trip to do, but these things happen...
