Octavia Estate (Engine code BKC) 1.9tdi PD

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have been told I have an issue with the cooling fans on my 1.9tdi estate PD 2005 vintage......

On my vehicle there are two cooling fans behid the radiator. There is a smaller one (on the left as you look at the car from the front with the bonnet up (in front of the air con compressor)) and a larger one on the right.

I know that the temperature is hellish at the moment but on my car the fan on the left does not seem to operate at all and the one on the right (the larger one) is on and off every few seconds and spins quite rapidly. The smaller fan is not seized. The car is not overheating at all

Do I need to check fuses and if so where?

Is this a fault?

When should the smaller fan operate?

I have just had to replace my air con compressor (I will start a new thread about that later as I have found an excellent air con specialist that I wish to share with all readers of the forum)

As usual can I just say that all advice is greatly appreciated on this excellent forum.

Many thanks

Tom

PS the car has now done 175,000 miles so it really could be anything- my favourite is just a failed motor

sounds like the ac fan cooling the ac radiator then.....

if they were both blowing full speed, and staying on for a short while after shutdown then i would say it would be a failed fan controller....

a quick scan with VCDS will show error codes if there are any....

I'm in n. wales if you're nearby.

Thanks for the reply

That's a very kind thought but I am miles and miles away(Nortth Herts), so thanks v much for that but to go on to the content of your post. There may not be a fault then....If the big fan (on the right) is the ac cooling fan then the engine fan just may not be tripping because it doesn't need to because the engine is not too hot (ever since I have had this car, thats some 160,00 miles the temp gauge for the engine has just gone straight to normal and stayed there and the gauge has never even gone slightly over half way. When I was checking this out the air con was on, also

That sounds to me like there may be no problem.........Doh!

Thanks so much for explaining.......

Tom

If you turn the AC on then the large fan should come on and stay on the whole time until the AC is switched off. if its coming on/off with the AC on then something is wrong somewhere as it should run all the time with the AC. The little fan will only come on if required in addition to the main fan, to help with cooling if the engine is getting very hot.
