Aircon or fans not working

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, my air con has not worked for about a year so decided to have a look today and noticed that neither fans behind the radiator are working at all, I even left the car ticking over for about half an hour but nothing, could this be what is preventing my air con from working? what is the solution to the fan problem?

Ok, your best solution is to go to Kwik-Fit for a regas. I suspect you have more of a problem than just lack of gas, but they'll try and regas and only charge you if that gets the air working, so it's a free first-call diagnostic. After that, use Yellow Pages to find an automotive aircon specialist to get issues fixed for a good price (OEM parts at actual OEM price, not VAG price, labour at indie price, not subsidise new car showroom price).

When you press the AC button the fans should come on straight away to cool the gas running through the condenser.

Being a diesel the engine may well not reach the temperature to trigger the cooling fans normally at idle, when I was testing the fan on my Audi it did not really get hot enough until I took it for a drive. If you go out for a 10 mile or so drive, then pop the bonnet with the engine running the fan should be on.

About a month ago I noticed my air-con wasn't quite as cold as it used to be; it still worked with the condenser fan kicking in etc. but it struggled in higher temperatures. I took it to Kwik Fit who told me the re-gas wasn't successful due a leak...after this the air-con didn't work at all so I took it to an AC specialist - they pressure tested it and added a dye to the system to check for leaks but found none so they regassed it and it's been icy cold ever since! They reckoned the Kwik Fit machine must have been broken because they use a pretty much identical set-up.

I had the same problem just over a year ago. The fans didn't run and the aircon didn't work. Had a full zircon service and regas and the said there's a fail safe that prevents the aircon from running without the fans as too much pressure builds up in the system (at least that was the blab they gave me.).

After a little inspection and testing the fans manually i discovered the fan controller which is mounted on the bottom right of the engine bay wasn't working so had that replaced and all is fine! (apart from my leaky condenser but that's another story)

As above, aircon compressor activation is routed through the fan controller, which you can get to from underneath or behind the nearside front wheel arch. It's a black box with two plugs into it. Check the wiring into it first. The fans are needed to blow air over the condenser while the car is stationary

Have a look at the compressor down the front of the engine bay on the left (Just follow the crank belt/alternator belt). Is the very end of it turning when the engine is running. If its not then that will be the problem. There's like plastic nubs inside get worn down or break It has a self destruct. If for any reason theres a problem it sheers off. Try that 1st. I've just done a bit of jiggery poker with mine 3 weeks ago and its worked fine ever since. I tried to have it degassed as it wasn't working but the guy said there's plenty in there.

You can see them in this pic

How easy or difficult was it to fit the fan controller?

I'm in the same position as you, I suspect it as being either the fan controller or the actual motor for the fan has burnt out. I noticed that my fan was rubbing against a thick cable (earth I think) which could have been stopping it from turning properly. I'm thinking this could have caused premature failure of the fan.

Could be worth checking the fan is free to turn.

Ive have left my car ticking over in my drive for 4hrs and never had the fans come on but i know they 'worked' as i checked with a multimeter. They have only ever come on with the aircon on and how i managed to get the non aircon working is detailed above.

My setup is a little different to the vRS - I only have one fan which has two speeds. After I sorted the rubbing on the cable and regassed the system, the fan would only run at fast speed - and that was only when the car was stationary with a/c on. Now it doesn't even do that.

Im sure theres a tread somewhere on the fan switch. Its been coverd loads. Have a look at the search up the top on the right. It may even be under 'common problems' i think its called. Ive read about it on here thats for sure tho.
