Replacing Front Reading Lights (Pano Roof & Alarm)

Recommended Posts

Here's how I installed some LED reading lamp bulbs in place of the standard W5W capless bulbs:

1. *Open the sunglasses holder and release the clips at the top which allows the holder 'door' to unclip at the sides and so hinge down further (the clips are a pain!). To be honest, I think you could miss this step out but it does make access to the attach screws in the next step easier [*Edit to add that I have now done the lamp swop without removing the sunglass holder].

2. Unclip the panel around the alarm sensors (gentle pull down at the rear edge).

3. Remove the two screws behind that sensor panel.

4. Ease out/down the whole front panel (wiring loom remains and prevents completely removing the panel).

5. Reading light bulbs sit in the two bulb holders that are removed by rotating and then removing them from the panel. Note, if fitting LED lamps some are polarity sensitive so depending on which way you fit the bulb in the holder or which way you fit the holder in the panel they may or may not work until you get them the right way round!

6. Refit is the opposite of the above.

The rear reading lamps have a spring clip holding them in place.

Carefully dive in with a screwdriver from the front edge to push the clip in and then the ease the lamp unit out. Make sure the screwdriver is clean and be careful not to harm the headlining....

I swopped the complete units for these excellent units from Superskoda:

PS I've edited the front lights post above to add that you don't have to remove the sunglasses holder to get to the front reading lamps. Bought some cheap LED bulbs that both fell to bits and were rolling around in the lamp - good game trying to hear where the noise was actually coming from as one went round corners!

Thanks for this. I was hoping to change all the interior ones to LED's so this will be useful.

Two questions:

1. What are the two little LED's at the front edge for? I noticed them lit whilst driving at dusk tonight and one of them shines annoyingly on the frame of the mirror.

2. Is the front edge of this 'frame' that holds the interior sensor and the bulbs meant to be loose? I can push the edge around a bit after I noticed that it was hanging down a little the other day.

1/ Commonly called "cats eyes" and provide a gentle background illumination to the centre console and gear stick area. Light level adjusts with the dash rheostat.

2/ When you say "front" do you mean the windscreen end or the other end, where the glasses case goes? My "other" end can be moved quite easily.

Karl, to answer your questions - sort of:

1. The two LEDs at the front edge (commonly called 'cat's eyes' lights) aren't connected, so don't illuminate, on the roof panel as fitted to TIBET III (or I or II for that matter).

With the light sensor mounted on the windscreen behind (in front!) of the rear view mirror they would be shining on the mirror - as it would appear yours are. There are various roof panels fitted with the pano roof depending on the type of alarm fitted or the light sensor.

I'm surprised yours are illuminating as it's an Elegance so will have the light sensor there. Perhaps a previous owner connected them up?

2. The panel is very secure when clipped and screwed in place. The only bit that is remotely loose is the hinged panel forwards of the sun glasses holder which you can see open in my pictures above. Even that fits fine when clipped up though.

I'll go take a look at these, but they were lit at dusk last night, did little to illuminate the interior (apart from the top of the mirror) and seemed pretty pointless.

I'll remove the panel following these instructions and see if there is a broken clip at the front edge (by the windscreen).

No broken clip, just wasn't put back properly. Now fixed.

Took the opportunity to swap the bulbs for some Philips Bluevision ones which are much whiter and a little brighter than normal bulbs.

Now I know the little LED's are called 'cats eyes' I've found a few threads about them. Thank you.

That's wrong then. They should be disabled on the pan roof models because the overhead console is mounted further forward than on the fixed roof models.

I really miss them as I had similar "submarine" lights on previous cars and was disappointed they're not active on my Yeti, but seeing where they're mounted in proximity to the rear view mirror, I do understand why Skoda elected to disable them. Something I can live without for the benefit of having the glass roof.

Looks like I'll have to live with them as I can't find any way to disable them.

They do dim with the instrument display illumination dimmer switch though.

Small point but I think it's that the mirror is moved after under the cat's eyes because of the light/rain sensor rather than the roof panel moving forwards.

As you say, Karl, it may well be that the cat's eyes are all part of the main circuit board in the roof panel - not a simple case of snipping the red/blue/yellow wire as there isn't one!

All very mysterious....

Has anyone tried converting the front reading lights using Superskoda LED "Dome light" units?

They don't just replace the capless 5w bulbs by simply pulling the bulb out of its holder & pushing in an LED one, but you appear to have to remove the reflector in order to insert the LED array, which is a flat disk with self adhesive foam "wedges" to locate it between the original reflector & the front "dome" lens.

The problem is that I cant figure out how to remove the reflector, or the lens, from the grey plastic surround without risking breaking the mounting.

Also, once the new array is installed, does the passenger's light then dazzle the driver, as I assume it's no longer using the reflector to aim the light towards the passenger's side of the car?

Do your lights at present look like this?

Not exactly the same Urrell, though the actual lens/reflector unit is very similar to those in your pics.

My reading lights look like exactly like those in Aerofurbs original post. (like the image below, but with the sunroof rotary knob inbetween the square grilles.

I'm currently thinking I've made a mistake buying the Supershoda lamps (that they say do fit) and maybe I should have gone down the route that Graham followed.

Fitted Osram LEDs in mine and had no issues. Admittedly they were more expensive than Llanigraham's though!

Did have a pair of cheap ones in for a while which worked OK. I just didn't like the 'bright white' effect.

Thanks for the suggestions about installing capless LEDS, but unfortunately, I've already bought the Superskoda ones and can't figure out how to fit them.

So back to the original question, has anyone successfully fitted the Superskoda front interior light LED upgrade units, and if so, how did you do it?

And once fitted, do the lights cease to be directional?
