egr help needed

Hi everyone. Just signed up for the forum. Have a friend with a 2010 fabia 1.6 tdi 105ps which has had a number of issues.

Firstly dpf got full and put car in limp mode so local vag specialist did a BG clean? Sorted for a couple of days.

They were due to drive from edinburgh to cornwall for 10 days but as it was going imto limp mode fears about driving to cornwall so i lent them my wifes mazda. I borrowed the fabia to run to office on friday which is a good 8 mile run on the bypass each way. Thought this would help especially at 3000 rpm.

Did this with no issues or lights etc.

I them used for a short drive to play football yesterday. By the time the blue warm up light went off and i booted it the coil light and limp home came on. Ignition off and it went away until i breached 2500 rpm. Next time i started engine management light came on with the flashing coil light.

I have a cheap obd computer so pplugged in and it threw up a 0102 and 0202 code. Maf and injector cylinder 2 issues.

Took back to vag specialist who have better testing equipment and without plugging in stated it must be egr valve and £800 minimum to resolve or £450 to map out.

First of all thoughts here? And secondly im pretty good at amatuer mechanics. Could i buy a second hand unit and fix myself?

If i can then what particular egr valve am i needing to look for if you all think its the egr and it cant be saved.

Cheers in advance.

My other car is a new vw golf gtd so hope i havent disgusted you that the wife owns a mazda!

Mine failed and was replaced under warranty. Mechanic told me it is a big job and burried around the back of the engine bay. Lots of stuff to remove he said. These cars just do not work as a town car. VAG should be sued for making an engine thats not fit for purpose or guarantee egr replacements for 15 years.

I had the egr valve fail on my 1.6tdi 2010 roomster a few weeks ago, fortunately it was replaced under warranty. The breakdown guy seemed to know what the problem was when I described it to him, even before plugging the diagnostics in. So I guess there are quite a number of these failing on engines this age. He said it was caused by heat from exhaust causing coolant to leak into the electrics of the egr valve and is was a garage only job due to the time taken to replace it (lots of other bits need to be removed first).

Not something I asked at the time, but does anyone know if the new part has been modified to stop this happening again or can I look forward to a big in 4 years time?

thanks for your responses. now leaves two options. replace ear at a cost of between £800 and £1000 with the risk that this happens again?

other options are remove egr valve and insert delete pipe and map out egr. cost of map and labour for egr removal probably £600.

or do you leave the egr valve in place (open) and map it out. this is the cheapest as just the cost of the mapping.

I'm tending to think the last as cheapest and essentially does same as egr delete moving gases from one bit to the other.

anything else I should consider.

I had egr failure on my roomster 1.6 cr tdi 105. I assume it's the same engine. The egr is an integral part of the coolant circuit according to my mechanic. Therefore you can't remove it.
