Massive Power Loss 2.5 v6 TDi auto transmission

Recommended Posts

hello .. i have a 2009 Superb mk1 2.5 v6 TDi automatic transmission.

it all happened after my car broke down one morning and took a fair bit of time to get to repaired. My car had a very slight knocking sound at idle one two or few knocks and it disappears off. Didn't take it seriously until one day out of the blue when i took her out in the morning it stopped!! and my car wouldn't start. The end result i had to change one of my piston and few tappets and whole other  things and re-condition the whole engine block.!!..changed all the timing belts and its kits..water pump...engine oil..changed engine fan and the air conditioning fan too..air filter..oil filter... Basically got screwed with a big $$$... But since i loved my car i decided to keep it and not give it off. But ever since i got it back from the garage ...my car was never like it used to be.

the car changes all the gears ...but there is no power ..i can barely go above 100 km/h on it now ! :( . If i try to accelerate immediately the RPM rises to over 2.5 - 3.5 but no immediate increase in speed.... the engine noise rises and the car gradually picks up speed! like really slow!! No warning lights on the Speedo !  Overtaking any other vehicle on the road has become a dream right now. I was so sad by this outcome that i even decided to sell her off...but couldn't !! ... any one has any clue why this is happening??

I had taken my car to a local garage near my house where they only said they couldn't find any thing ... and that my transmission oil was low near to empty... so i called in Skoda Service and made a booking for tomorrow. I told them my situation they said they will look into it ...if needed they might drain out watever remains that is there and put in new transmission oil and oil filter.

will update you guys after i am done with that .

update : ok so ..as mentioned ..i took my car to Skoda service centre .....found out a bunch of things wrong with my car ....like the electric circuit inside my car cabin all the vanity bulbs doesnt work! ..found out the roof line started to patch up with drops of water under heavy rain! ...bearings all gone! lol ....need to change transmission oil and filter......but i aint gonna loose hope on my car ...so one thing at a time or two..  gonna get it fixed !

about the power loss the technician said somethng abt checking the EGR valve for some blockage ...umm i dont kno much about cars but i am willing to learn abt it .. :) and the transmission oil filter is out of stock and is said to come next week around wednesday.. so booking has been made ..so will get the transmission oil and filter changed first and also the front wheel bearings as it makes funny knock knock knock noise when i turn my car.!!

i hope the power loss situation gets sorted out quickly ...

getting the car pumped up is the next goal after this fix! ECU re-map :D and H&R lowering springs!

You have (or have had) water under your carpet.  You need to read the threads on water ingress and get it sorted before spending any more money on it...! :)

If the roof lining is wet, it could be sunroof drains are disconnected (if you have sunroof).  Or really, really bad condensation (indoor tropical rain forest?!)

no water under the carpet ..checked ..n double checked when i got back home .... this is the first time i am noticing such a thing ...actually ...i had to leave my car on the side of a service road as i had some work to do in the office opp to where i parked my car.. ...n it began raining like crazy ...soo crazy by the time i was done n got back to my car ...all the window had fogged up ..n all the cars were going really slow with hazzar lights on ....it was dark n stuff at 12:30pm!!

aneway as i started my car and took it forward ..i heard few drops of water ..from the rear right passenger side thats when i turned back and saw few drops dripping down and just stopped ...n i saw the roof side little soaked near to the right passenger vanity light...

i do have a sunroof .. mine is a 2.5 elegance ...no drops from there ..its dry as of now.. this is the first time i had such an issue and i did mention it at the Skoda service ...they said they ll have to check it up ..

Have you actually removed the door seal and carpet holding trim, and lifted the carpet up and put your hand under the carpet (touching the bare metal of the car chassis?).  The carpet can hold tons of water before it is felt on the carpet surface (the carpet doesn't even touch the bottom of the floor in many places).  The back is especially good at collecting water, and there are joints in cables which corrode and give exactly the kind of failure of all vanity lighting.

If you have disconnected sunroof drains the water won't come out of the sunroof hole as that is pretty much the highest point in the roof - it will roll down the headlining.  You can test it easily with a container with water in it - open the sunroof all the way and pour water carefully and slowly into each of the drains (2 at the front corners, two at the back corners out of view).  If you do this you might find your problem.

See the below diagram found via google.  The rear sunroof drain is actually about in the middle of the roof judging by this diagram... no-where near the sunroof hole...  This is Passat diagram but it is the same thing (just longer tubes on Superb).

the roofline where i found the wet patch was around the vanity bulb (right rear side) ...and no where else ..and btw ..my whole of the roofline has sunken down !! need to change the whole thing! like i said i have a few bits of work to be done on my car ... but will get it done .... fix all the small issues and the engine side first before turning into the modification bit ! .... slowly but surely !

Well, you need to fix the root cause.  If it is sunroof you either have a blocked tube or disconnected tube.

These cars are well known for letting water in from lots of different places, unfortunately.

Ok so this might sound a little weird to you all but here goes  ... i dont know if you know this guy named "Scotty Kilmer" ..he is a mechanic..found bunch of videos from him on Youtube on how to DIY any problems with your car. Very helpful stuff and i told him about my power loss situation.

My question was ...

Hello Scotty,

I have a 2009 Skoda Superb 2.5 V6 TDi Automatic transmission. (similar to those VW Passats). I have a major power loss issue with my car. All the gears shift automatically as needed no problem but my car moves very slowly it has 163 bhp but acts as if it has 30! When i put the peddle down the car revs hard but picks up speed very slowly. I can barely reach 100 km/h. What do you think is wrong with my car? Please help.

He asnwered...

"VW's are known for MAF sensor problems, so check that first. Also pressure test the fuel pump and have the catalytic converter pressure tested to see if its clogged up."

umm what is a MAF sensor?? i will take the car to a garage tomorrow and see if it helps with all the checking. I hope he is right with this one. i will go check it out while i wait for my appointment with Skoda in two days.

Mass Air Flow.

It detects how much air is coming into the engine so the ECU knows how much fuel it needs to inject.

If it gets a dodgy reading it just inject a standard/default amount (much less normally).

It should be on the air intake after the filter. Quick way to rule this out is to disconnect and if the car runs better then there's your problem.

well after much browsing through the internet i found out a "CRC 05110 Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner - 11 Wt Oz" would do the job for me to get my Mass air flow sensor cleaned and hopefully fix my power loss issue.

the standard rate is £6.35 only!!   i thought ok that's a quick easy and cheap fix to clean and find out if anything is wrong with my Air mass sensor. Then again i realized down here i don't get to buy anything near to the word cheap or good quality car products online !! turns out its £47.70 here for a product that actually costs only £6.35 !! what a bummer !

If you car's MAF is faulty then cleaning it will be pointless. I suggest that you follow Phil-E's advice above first and research the cost of a new MAF.

  • 2 weeks later...

i have noticed the ESP/TCS light being lit up on my speedo..and when the car is in motion or still when that light does light up the engine make a weird noise like the smooth v6 sound turned into a tractor noise!   . I have also noticed when the car is in motion when this light does show up and the engine noise changes (to that of a tractor lol) if i just put down the accelerator a lil more down the rpm rises and the weird noise goes away but the ESP/TCS light still lit up! ...it goes and comes back ...!!

does this have anything to do with my powerloss on my car ??

Have you tried my suggestion of unplugging the MAF yet?

Phil

yes Phil i did unplug the MAF and have a go .... i did not notice much difference when i unpluged it  ..other than the fact the ESP/TCS light was light up constantly on my speedo ! ...sad part is i am still waiting to get my transmission oil and filter to be changed from Skoda service. Apparently its still not in stock with the dealers! speak about bad service.

ok this is a random thought that went through my mind... does my powerloss problem has anything to do with loose pipes or something ? i mean from the turbo or intercooler or something ????

or is it because i need an EGR clean up ? or transmission oil change ? or MAF sensor replacement ?? ... there is literally no power in my car!

Looking at our original post again.

This bit to me definitely suggests a transmission problem.

If when you put your foot down the engine suddenly increases revs (without the gearbox changing down I might add) but the car doesn't accelerate then it sounds like the gearbox is slipping.

This could either be as simple of the oil needing to be changed or a mechanical problem.

I'd try the gear oil change first and go from there.

all this problems started happening after my car broke down and a lot of parts were changed from a workshop near my house. i'll list them down below:

1) Engine oil
2) Coolant
3) Timing Belt (small)
4) Timing Belt (large)
5) Cam follower (4 nos)
6) Water Pump
7) Alternator Belt Tensioner
8) Tappet (3 nos)
9) Timing Tensioner

10) R.T.V (2 nos)

11) Piston with connecting Rod
12) valve
13) valve seal
14) battery

these were the engine parts that was changed and the garage took a fair bit of time to get it done also.

before this unfortunate event happened i had another problem with the engine overheating due to some coolant issue and also a faulty fan right behind the radiator. so got that also changed. Parts changed then were :

1) 1 fan changed
2) front wheel bearings
3) all four disk break pads

4) coolant
5) both front disks changed

when the mechanic was putting things back on they made a mistake which resulted in the car not accelerating and there was lag in performance. Later found found that the turbo pipe which goes right above the shield under the engine was loose was had come off..once that was re-done the car was back to normal.

well till date my car doesnt feel normal whatsoever.

so first things i am going to do is to follow Phil's advice and get the transmission oil and oil filter changed then see for the next step if that doesnt seem to help me out get my loss of power back.

firstly let me apologize for the late reply .... my v6 has got heap loads of issues! ...oil leak here there and everywhere! ... as it seems my turbo is causing some oil leakage it seems which is why there is no power on my car..and also after scanning i found out lots of sensors needs attention and replacement ... ABS sensor...airbag sensor..gear ratio sensor? ESP sensor lights r up ..and also all my injector seals needs replacement as there is mild leakage in that area aswell... also been told my car need new transmission oil and oil filter.

and also pollen filter needs attention and also my sunroof drain pipes are blocked. interior Electrical needs to be checked!

ok so i know its going to take some time fixing her up ...car is already given up for repair(again---never ending for me actually--but not ready to give up on her though :D ) ...

ok so worse case scenario if i have to change my Turbo what costs should i be looking at for buying a new one ?? a brand new turbo here will cost me about 950 pounds!!  Is it advisable to go for a used-turbo. please help me out here..any advice right now is heaven for me. The service supervisor told me they will first check if my turbo can be repaired up...if not i will need to have it replaced.!! :( ....what is the price of a new set there in the UK ?? i have one of my family member coming down from the UK next month hopefully....so i can get it from there if its reasonably priced. !

does this item look like it is compatible with 2.5 v6 TDi engines??

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/for-Skoda-Superb-V6-2-5-TDI-GT2052V-454135-Turbo-Turbocharger-454135-059145702D-/191259946832?

it looks like i have to get myself a new turbo. i thought it'd be better to get a new one for 200-250 pounds than to spend 350 pounds on fixing up my old turbo. Can some one who knows technical details tell me if this will fit my car ??
