Miles till empty

I filled the car up a few weeks ago and it said I had around 520 miles left.

I then filled up last night and it said 420.

Little confused as to how there is a big difference.

Anyone else had this?

Yes, as Softscoop says it depends how you drive.

Before the 520 you will have been averaging more mpg than before the 420.

There is a button inside the filler pipe that allows you to (intentionally or inadvertantly) overfill your tank by about 10 litres.

I suspect that if this has happened, your MPG figures will be wrong.

Personally I work on the basis of never doing more than 350 to 400 miles per tankful.

As BossFox said, the Range being less after filing up is because of the Average MPG you were doing before you filled up.

ie 52 MPG,

and once the tank got 10 litres in say it calculated on 42 mpg.

Venting a Tank and putting in an extra 7 litres will not read extra on the Fuel gauge either.

Just done it 66 miles ago.

Yes usually when getting like 44 mpg.!!!!

But i was getting 1/2 that, so it will going down when i get back in the car.

& the range will be like 320 miles probably.

Was that because of spirited driving and worth the cost, or short journeys.

or because the economy is dropping off & the car needs new spark plugs?

All the time.

In the VRS if I have been buzzing around town for the last few journeys, roundabout to roundabout sprint, then the 10 gallon tank full might show a range of only 275 miles.

I can then drive near 200 miles and it will be showing over 300 miles still left when I get back to Worcester.

I think the computer works on both the average mpg on the 1st and 2nd registers and a third one you cannot see that I guess records the last 100 kms or the like and then it averages or weighted averages these figures.

It is odd though as the good mpg seems easier to achieve on a near empty or near full tank but not in the middle part of the range, odd.

Well my Twincharger drank the 10 gallons at the pace of just above 35 mpg. 360 miles actually done.

so it took 47 litres to more than brim it (vented),

& it was showing 55 mile range when i stopped to put it in. It then showed 420 mile range.

(i was not hypermiling to get the 35 MPG, not very cold, windy or wet, just average mixed driving.)

A lot of short journeys unfortunately :-(. I'm getting my car serviced next week as well as new plugs. They're on 25k now and no problems with them but wouldn't hurt to change them :-)
