12v to 220v converter

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a 12 volt to 220 volt converter that somehow fits in the rear of a 2011 Superb Estate? I really don't want one one that looks like this: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Images/Products/size_3/TLINV600ST.JPG

I would like it to somehow "fit" in here: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Images/Products/size_3/TLINV600ST.JPG

My wife's dad has a 2006 Passat salon and he could choose it as an option when he bought the car.

Hard to read the writing in that picture, but it looks like the socket is only rated to 120 W. My Octavia II was good to 180 W based on the 15 A fuse fitted to the 12 V socket. If you're going custom, it would be nice to get a little more power out of it so you can do more than charge phones and run small electrical items.

I've got something like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/compact-inverter-with-usb-socket-a87uk

It's flat enough to go in the pocket on the back of the seat when not in use, but there's enough room under the driver/passenger seat to install it permanently if you use it regularly. If you can live with one wire going to the rear seat power socket it would be a lot simpler than trying to shoehorn Octavia 3 parts into a car they don't quite fit. Replacing the stock plug with a 90 degree bend one would neaten up the wiring more. It's all a question of whether having it perfectly integrated is worth it to you of course :).

Your link does not work.

I was hoping to find something that could replace the small "ashtray" under the 12v socket. But if not, then something small, but still capable of a few hundreds watts. If it fits under the seat or in the backpockets when not in use that would be alright aswell.

Hopefully the link works this time. http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/compact-inverter-with-usb-socket-a87uk

If not go to the Maplin site, search for '12V inverter' and you should find a 120 W one for £34.99. There are cheaper ones, but the compact size and 2A USB socket would make it my top choice. Standard USB sockets only charge at 0.5A, so they often just slow down the rate the phone battery goes flat while it's being used for navigation. A mounting bracket is also available linked off that page.

This might be helpful.  With a bit of modifying, you should be able to tap it directly into the 12V feed to the rear seat 12V cigar lighter, and be left with something fairly low-profile: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002XDERD8/ref=gb1h_img_c-2_2227_ac39216c?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_s=center-new-2&pf_rd_r=1PS4PX1E86JSSWY1NNEY&pf_rd_i=20&pf_rd_p=562712227

EDIT: just realised it's the same as the Maplin one above - but cheaper.
