Bolero - SD card stuck in CD slot!

Over the last few days I have noticed a clicking sound coming from the Bolero head unit.... Interrogation of the family members reveals that someone (who shall remain nameless) fed an SD card into the CD slot! Before I throw myself on the mercy of the dealer, does anyone know how I can get it out?

You'll need to open up the headunit which will void its warranty, so best left to the dealer.

If you fancy a challenge, remove the headunit slowly and remove the top cover. Remove slowly so as to avoid the card falling deeper into the stereo.

This gets worse... After a trip to the dealer today, I was advised that the Skoda dealership can't fix it. The alternatives seem to be

  1. Buy a new unit from Skoda - at a cost of around £700 (fitted).
  2. But a new unit 'online' and have it fitted and re-coded by Skoda. Presumably such a sale would be made by someone who needs a place to keep their sandwiches more than a radio to listen to...
  3. Have a look online to find a specialist firm that can take the unit apart and remove the SD card.

Does anyone know of a specialist company that can help with this? All suggestions gratefully accepted.

There are a couple of Bolero units for sale on here at present. Around the £150 mark.

Good sellers will include the code in the price. If not eBay can do you one for about £10.

Hazzy Dayz (I think that's how it's spelt) are quite good at fixing things if you don't mind posting it out.

Or PM 'Rustynuts' on here. He may be able to help.

I think you have a number of options available to you, depending on how brave you feel and/or how much money you want to spend.  As far as the warranty on the Bolero goes I would imagine feeding something other than a CD into the CD slot would probably void your warranty anyway.  Did the dealer attempt to dismantle the Bolero to retrieve the SD card?  I suspect they may have been reluctant to do so for fear of causing further damage.  Anyway, your options;

  1. Get on yell.com and look up 'car audio installer' in your area.  Hopefully you'll find a decent one near to you who could either attempt the repair themselves or know where to send it on your behalf
  2. Ask your dealer to remove the unit for you and then take it home and set about it with a toolkit.  What's the worst that could hapen - it's broken anyway ;-)
  3. If the radio and SD card still work then just live with it - who listens to CDs these days anyway?
  4. Get a cheap and nasty Chinese double DIN all singing all dancing unit off eBay
  5. Get a secondhand Bolero from somebody who has upgraded to a Columbus - there are a few on eBay right now for about £150
  6. Get a secondhand Amunsden - there are a few on eBay right now for about £300
  7. Get a secondhand Columbus - there are a few on eBay right now for about £500
  8. Get one of the Kenwood aftermarket units that are specific to VAG group cars

According to Google there are 2 audio repair companies in Lincoln:

I C Electronics, 2 High St, Lincoln.

InCar Lincoln Ltd, Lyndon Business Pk, Farrier rd, Lincoln.

I'd be talking to them first.

I presume it is so far into the CD slot that you can't see / retrieve.

I would go with either attempting a repair yourself if you are competent or having a repair done.

I note you are in Rugby - a trip to Leicester isn't too far away so you could visit Car Electronics (http://www.celstores.com/) - I have used these for many years and they offer a great service. Or there is Autolec in Rugby (http://autolec-rugby.co.uk/)
