Surprise!

Recommended Posts

So, after buying a 2008 Scout PD TDI in early 2010 I have taken it from 32k to 131k miles when this week it had its first bulb failure - a front sidelight had gone out. I got a new bulb and proceeded to remove the nearside front headlight to facilitate changing, when, imagine my surprise behind the headlight to be confronted by this:

Now I have heard a lot about dodgy resistor in box type tuning devices along with other proper tuning boxes from the likes of DTUK. So can anyone offer any comments on the one I have found?

As it seems to have caused no ill effects over the last 100k miles and I don't know where or to what it may be connected, I am thinking I will just take the easy route and leave it there, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of these and whether it is the "Resistor" type or a proper tuning box.

Don't forget to ask your insurance company if you can pay the extra for the years when you didn't know about it!

He could still claim to know nothing about it -- until he posted on this forum!

Thanks for pointing that out guys, I hadn't even considered the insurance angle. Still, if I remove it it will be a useful comparison to standard performance.  Problem is tracing all of the cables as these things often come with a plug that allows the wiring loom to remain in place, but obviously I don't have that.

By the way (Just a thought, please feel free to shoot me down) if I did have to make a claim what would be the chance of the insurance company finding this post?

It's not so much them finding this particular thread, but in the unfortunate event of you making a claim and either the insurance company finding it, or you not having the time to remove it before they inspect the vehicle.

As an aside, do you know if it is actually connected? If so, is it set up correctly?

It has a cable plugged into a D connector but I don't know where it runs to so don't know if it is connected or not.

it will just take 5 minutes to remove as you just follow the cables from the box to where there are connected to and from the pic from the website it just looks like battery, fuel temp sensor and may be maf sensor, then you connect the original connectors back in and chuck the black box in the bin :D

Additional 26bhp will make a difference especially when overtaking and better pull in lower gears so if you do miss the performance the best time add it back on is during insurance renewal time as you tend to get stung with standard insurers and a specialised modified insurance broker such as Chris Knott may offer you a better deal.
