New Superb Owner

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd say hi, it's been a while since I was last here.

Just traded in my Race Blue 07 Octavia vRS Tdi Estate which served me well from new, with no issues...

and joined the Superb 'fold' with a new Superb II Elegance Estate DSG 170 Tdi in Metal Grey.

I thoroughly enjoyed my test drive, and the 150 miles or so I've covered - still letting things set in. It's a lovely car, completely different feeling driving it.

I'll take some better pic's when I'm out and about, with some half interesting background - I'm sure you've seen plenty by now! Sorry for the rather naff picture :)

Nice car. Be interesting to know how you find it compared to the Octavia vRS after you've covered a few miles in it. I have a 2013 Superb FL and last year my wife had a new Octavia SE, I do feel the Superb looks and feels a class or two above the Octavia, although the Octavia is a nice car it doesn't have the same road presence as a Superb - just my personal thoughts, apologies to any Octavia owners who might read this, no offence meant.

cheers folks,

cmc - I've got a few trips planned so I'll update once we've spent a bit of time together :) biggest change for me so far, is a noticeable increase in width inside (my passenger can share the arm rest, rather than me jabbing them in the ribs), and much less road, wind and engine noise, even a relatively slow speeds. A bit more body roll though!

litchfielddriver - I was a little tempted to go with the 1.6 TDi but couldn't quite make the mental leap from the vRS. :D

Welcome to the 'fold'! The metal grey really suits it. I think you will really notice the increase in overall ride quality. It might take about 5k miles or so for the suspension to settle in. You'll also notice a big difference in refinement of the newer CR versus the older PD engine in the Octavia, although you might miss the 'kick' of the PD engine at low torque :)

Happy motoring :)

Running in seems to matter less with new cars, but not using full power until the engine is at temperature and not letting the engine labour at low revs (You'll feel it vibrating) are two things I'd do for the life of the engine. You will be surprised how low the revs can be if you're just looking to maintain speed though - since you've got a DSG, the car will decide this for you. Fuel economy and power tend to get better as the engine wears in too as the piston rings need to wear into the cylinder surfaces to seal better, allowing the engine to make full compression. This takes thousands of miles though. People selling 3 year old diesels with low mileage are often getting rid of the car before the engine is at its best...

Yep just drive it , only full throttle when its nice and warm but dont be afraid to stretch its legs , you cant let it labour and you cant over rev it so enjoy

Thanks folks.

Had a slightly longer trip out yesterday - most of the time in a 6 mile tail back on the M4! At least it was comfortable. :)

You don't want to drive it too granny or this is the reason they use oil I'm led to believe, a good even spread of speeds and accelerations helps break it in best long term, dare I say it you should get on the Autobahn and take it to it's max for a short while as well.

Thanks Folks.

Shot of the outgoing motor - still looking good for almost 8 years old.

And a few of the new one, after first wash, including kids-eye-view and back seat prep.

Cheers Superb170.

There were a couple of small dings out of view, but she was in great shape - should be a good motor for whoever picks her up next. I never thought to see if anyone was interested here, unfortunately.

I enjoyed the car, and it's mid-range pull - but still missed the Mk1 a bit...

I can see the pattern now, you obviously give every car a fair amount of attention!  As I said above that kick you get from a 170 PD is nice alright but short-lived of course - you will have a less dramatic but much smoother and quieter power delivery to look forward to with the Superb!  BTW are you getting any detailing done or have you done so in the past - just interested given how well your previous cars looked?

I'm contemplating some detailing - perhaps not quite yet.

In the past, I've mainly cleaned myself, not to the level of many on here. I tend use to use Mer Polish and Wax, and I've used a number of different car shampoos.

The first vRS was done almost every weekend, the second has the dealer treatment and a bit less love due to babies/small children - personally I found the dealer applied treatment very worthwhile, and over the life of the car reasonable value. ( I know others don't though ;))

I'm interested in getting a bit more into it now, having spent somewhat more on this motor and having kids that are a wee bit older, and so a little more time to do it. It's been treated by the dealer inside and out to give a base - no swirls noticed so far, so seems well applied.

I've invested in a pressure washer, as the last one overheated, and looking at foam lances etc.

Mechanically, I've never held back on them - when damaged they get fixed and always serviced at a dealer, which can be painful, but worthwhile over the long-term. The first vRS was treated to a few new bits (jabbasport remap and cat-back exhaust, arb's, new DV and Carbonio intake (for a bit). The second was totally stock, never really felt the need to tweak it, maybe because it spent most of its life travelling with kids in the back.

Prior to these I was a serial Ford driver - 1.1 Fiesta, 1.3 Escort and 1.3 Fiesta.

After a little clean up and wax, I've made the first tweak to the superb. Remove the dealer sticker and added a Brisky one (after figuring out how to order my Sticker from joining Freedom - thanks Colin :) ).

Now to see if I can get 'Spotted'.

A couple of changes complete:

* In another thread, added a dashcam.

* Added some draft excluder tape to the left and right sides of the passenger cubby to resolve a little rattle issue.

Now completed just over 1000 miles. So far, I'm starting to get used to the DSG and the way it thinks, and beginning to learn how that works with the throttle.

Still getting caught out by start-stop, when I press a little too hard on the brake, just before I want to head off again.

The engine is lovely, the experience is somewhat quieter than the old PD vRS, it's not noticeably slower. It doesn't ride the torque as low down, which I guess is due to the different characteristics of the engines.

Loving the ride quality, although one slightly unexpected outcome is a little more car sickness feeling for the kids in the back. They've grown up all their years so far in the back of a vrs estate, so I guess it's a bit more floaty for them.

I keep thinking up journeys, and extensions journeys to enjoy it more :)

Recent 1000 mile round trip to Edinburgh just took me over 5k miles. Car is settling into suspension nicely, awesome for cruising and simply enjoying the ride.
