Instructions for Changing Air Filter for K&N (or similar)

Recommended Posts

Although this is a very basic thing to do for many of us there are folk who love their cars but who are not into car 'DIY' - this is a very straightforward and easy thing to do.

I have done a simple guide with photos to show how to replace your panel air filter (be it an upgrade unit like the K&N in this thread) or straight forward replacement. The process is identical.

Link to photos in my drop box are here (Start at the top photo where the engine shot is and work down in sequence - last photo simply shows screwdriver required):

Tools: Medium sized Phillips screwdriver

Time: 10-15 minutes

Ease: Very easy

1. Undo the eight screws around the air box - do not remove them from their holes as they stay in place fine when unscrewed (and you will not lose them that way)

2. You may find that you need to remove the fuse box cover as it catches on the lid of the air box for removal

3.To remove fuse box lid slide the two plastic catches towards the unlock position (clearly marked on left and right side of fuse box lid). Remove fuse box lid.

4. Lift up air box lid to reveal air filter. NOTE: There is no need to undo the jubilee clip (large silver hose clip) at rear of air box lid as there is enough flexibility to lift the filter box lid with the hose in place (this flexible conduit connects to the housing of the Mass Airflow Unit - MAF sensor).

5. Remove air filter unit and check (mine was not too bad although you could easily see all the debris and dust collected in it including a few flies and bugs).

6. Check inside the air box housing - mine had lots of leaves as per the photo. Clear all the debris by hand or with a vac cleaner)

7. Check replacement air-filter with size of existing one just to be sure. You can see from the photos that the K&N is much thinner than the OE unit allowing a bit more air to move onto the air box.

8. Remove replacement K&N from packaging and drop it into the air box assembly ensuring that it is seated correctly within the air box base unit. DO NOT OIL THE FILTER - it comes pre-oiled. You only need to re-oil the panel when you service it for the first time (wash and clean). If in doubt read manufacturers instructions and check website for details.

9. Re-fit air box cover ensuring to tighten down all eight screws.

10. Re-fit fuse box cover.

End of job :)
